Bogdan Bogdanović

This document, intended as a resource for researchers, is derived from the thesis "The Partisans’ Cemetery in Mostar, Bosnia & Herzegovina: Implications of the deterioration of a Monument and Site", defended at the Raymond Lemaire International Centre for Conservation, Faculty of Engineering Sciences, KU Leuven, Belgium, in September 2013.

It discusses the architectural works of Bogdan Bogdanović (1922-2010) throughout the Former Yugoslavia, and gives an introduction to his opus by giving a brief description of each monument; its key architectural and landscape elements, history, and reason for construction. Alongside these details, the names given to the monuments (many lack an official name), both in various literature and colloquially are stated, and a summary of the protection laws currently covering the monument is given. The condition of the monument, and activities currently carried out at the site (both of a commemorative nature and otherwise) are also detailed.

The chapter is part of a scholarly catalog of the major survey exhibition "Toward a Concrete Utopia: Architecture in Yugoslavia, 1948-1980", held at The Museum of Modern Art, New York, from July 2018 until January 2019. The text offers a overview of the course of development of memorial production in socialist Yugoslavia in the context of European and global post-war Modernism. Several key examples and authors of monuments and memorial complexes are mentioned, while the central features of the innovative aspects of this production are further elaborated. The destruction and/or deterioration of some of the monuments in the post-socialist period is also discussed and interpreted as symptoms of anti-democratic and neo-fascist tendencies.

U prilogu su priređeni dokumenti Odbora za izgradnju spomen-parka u Čačku, u vezi s javnim opštejugoslovenskim konkursom koji je raspisan za idejno rešenje spomenika i spomen-parka u oktobru krajem 1962. godine. Konkurs je raspisan nakon što je 1961. godine kosturnica s posmrtnim ostacima partizanskih boraca izmeštena s centralnog trga, s namerom da se čitavo područje organski uredi i ukrasi velelepnim spomenikom. Na konkurs se prijavilo 20 autora, a žiri je nagradio jedan rad i predložio ga kao konačno idejno rešenje. Međutim, Odbor za izgradnju spomen-parka na kraju nije prihvatio predloženi koncept. U prilogu je priređena prepiska u vezi s izmeštanjem kosturnice, konkursna dokumentacija i ocene žirija, kao i potonja prepiska s autorima pobedničkog rešenja Momčilom Krkovićem i Aleksandrom Đokićem.

Lo que se presenta a continuación es un ensayo que nace de la visión de las monumentales ruinas de los edificios de la extinta Yugoslavia, en Belgrado, capital de la República de Serbia. Estos edificios, bombardeados el año 1999 por las fuerzas de la OTAN, comandadas por EE. UU., se encuentran aún sin reconstruir o demoler, dos décadas después de esos sucesos. Ruinas como las del Generalštab (Edificio del Estado Mayor Yugoslavo) sobre la diplomática Avenida Kneza Milosa generan una gran controversia pública sobre su destino. Esta situación sirve como detonante para realizar una serie de reflexiones acerca de la historia reciente de Yugoslavia y el componente urbicida de las guerras balcánicas. También abre la puerta a cuestionarse acerca de los resortes ideológicos en la construcción de la memoria colectiva. En el caso del Belgrado post-socialista, las ruinas se han usado propagandísticamente para la victimización nacionalista; sin embargo, paradójicamente, también inducen a preguntas incomodas para las autoridades serbias. Preguntas sobre el pasado y sobre el futuro. El ensayo analiza algunos sucesos importantes en la planeación urbana del Belgrado socialista y la potencia de ese proyecto en tanto “utopía concreta”. Compara aquellos hitos urbanísticos con la situación actual. También es un homenaje a la figura de Bogdan Bogdanović, arquitecto serbio y último alcalde del Belgrado Socialista, uno de los últimos utopistas urbanos del Siglo XX.

What is presented below is an essay that arises from the vision of some monumental ruins of the buildings of extinct Yugoslavia, in Belgrade, capital of the Republic of Serbia. Those buildings, bombed in 1999 by NATO forces, commanded by the U.S.A, are still not rebuilt or demolished, two decades after the events. Ruins like the Generalštab (Yugoslav General Staff Building) on the diplomatic Kneza Milosa Avenue generate a great public controversy about their fate. This situation serves as a trigger for a series of reflections on the recent history of Yugoslavia and the urbicidal component of the Balkan wars. It also opens the door to question the ideological springs in the construction of collective memory. In the case of post-socialist Belgrade, the ruins have been used propagandistically for nationalist victimization; however, paradoxically, they also lead to uncomfortable questions for the Serbian authorities. Questions about the past and about the future. The essay analyzes some important events in the urban planning of socialist Belgrade and the power of those projects as a “concrete utopia”. I also compare those urban milestones with the current situation. Not less important is, that this essay is a tribute to the figure of Bogdan Bogdanović, Serbian architect and last mayor of Socialist Belgrade, one of the last urban utopians of the 20th century.

Историјски развој градова предмет је социологије града која урбана питања и феномене посматра у социолошком контексту, анализирајући међусобну спрегу утицаја града и друштва. Једно од значајних предмета анализе социологије града јесте настајање првих градова, која ову урбанистичку и архитектонску појаву тумачи у друштвено-историјском оквиру. Богдан Богдановић, архитекта и урбаниста, дао је значајан допринос теоријама урбанизма, сходно томе да се у већини својих писаних дела бавио историјом града. Урбанистичке митологеме, његово дело представљено у овом раду, представљају значајно урбанистичко, али и социолошко штиво јер је, кроз историју града, указао на друштвени процес у контексту њиховог настајања. Пишући о историји настанка града пореди месопотамску и кинеску митологију којима жели да укаже на друштвене околности које су утицале на саму изградњу првих градова. У овом раду желимо да скренемо пажњу на ово Богдановићево дело које је би могло указати на додатни значај и потребу за читањем његових дела у социолошком кључу.
