Born Global firms

The purpose of this paper is to examine the phenomenon of the born global firm (BGF) in
the Indian context. Specifically, the paper explores firm-level characteristics (from the Indian IT
industry) which act as initiating forces for firms which have made cross-border acquisitions within
five years of incorporation.

This study investigates the internationalization strategies of Lusophone Africa multinational enterprises (MNEs) from Angola and Mozambique, more specifically their entry mode. Information was gathered through a survey of 29 MNEs upper management respondents and subsequent face-to-face semi structured interviews with 24 of them in their countries. The results suggest that most MNEs opted for equity-based investment strategies, mainly joint venture and mergers and acquisitions (M&A) as their preferred mode of entry when internationalizing. A significant group of them opted for e-commerce/ e-business strategies and direct and indirect exports. A smaller portion of the interviewees chose Greenfield investment as a mode of entry. Many of these MNEs could be classified as born global/international new venture (INV). Finally, this study presents a conceptual framework for use in studying the entry mode choice of enterprises from Lusophone Africa frontier markets and presents research propositions for better understanding the determinants of entry mode strategies of enterprise from Angola and Mozambique.

Gran parte dell’industria manifatturiera italiana è composta da imprese di piccole e medie dimensioni che manifestano elevate capacità di competere nei mercati esteri ma che, allo stesso tempo, hanno difficoltà  a seguire orientamenti strategici coerenti di fronte alle dinamiche della globalizzazione.
Questo lavoro fornisce una verifica, alla luce delle teorie finora formulate sui processi di internazionalizzazione delle imprese, in particolare quelle piccole e medie, di quali sono i cambiamenti che si sono manifestati negli ultimi anni nel modo di affrontare i mercati esteri. Attraverso un'analisi su un campione di imprese del settore della meccanica, il libro approfondisce qual è il grado di consapevolezza strategica e quali criteri vengono seguiti per le decisioni chiave a livello internazionale, cioè quelle sulla selezione dei mercati e la scelta delle modalità di entrata.
L'analisi fornisce spunti per delineare possibili percorsi di rafforzamento delle capacità strategiche e competitive delle imprese, che passano sostanzialmente attraverso forme di alleanze, soprattutto a partire dai network locali, e una migliore integrazione con i soggetti pubblici e istituzionali che possono favorire un'evoluzione dell'imprenditorialità e fornire stimoli e sostegni per l'attuazione di percorsi strategici coerenti e compatibili con le caratteristiche delle imprese stesse.

This conceptual paper explores different approaches for establishing born-global firms (BGFs) in developed and developing countries, with a special focus on Nigeria and Sub-Sahara Africa. It reviews the key constructs and frameworks that underpin new business development in born-global firms. Examples of these constructs are business development, dynamic capabilities, innovation, collaboration, entrepreneurship, and organisational learning. The research is important because of the relative lack of BGFs (Google, Amazon, Alibaba, and Facebook, for example) in Sub-Sahara Africa, compared to other parts of the world. Moreover, the frameworks for BGF new business development can be applied in subtly different ways in developed and developing country contexts. For example, BGFs in developed countries focus on niche products and services with breakthrough innovation, whilst those in developing countries, because of limited resources and capabilities, focus on underserved and mass markets, which do not require high level resources and capabilities. Realistic hypothetical examples of BGFs which directly underpin Nigerian and Sub-Sahara African higher education and economic development are used to illustrate the BGF business development constructs.

Kuruluşlarını takiben kısa süreler içerisinde uluslararası pazarlarda faaliyet göstermeye başlayan, geleneksel uluslararasılaşma sürecine ilişkin yaklaşımların öngördüğü aşamalardan geçmeyen küçük ve orta büyüklükteki işletmeler alan yazında “Küresel Doğan İşletme” olarak anılmaktadır. Küresel doğan işletmelerin baskın özelliklerinden birisi de uluslararası girişimcilik yönelimidir. Alan yazında uluslararası girişimciliğin yenilikçilik, risk alma ve proaktiflik olmak üzere üç boyutundan bahsedilmektedir. Bu araştırmada, uluslararası girişimciliğin proaktiflik boyutu ele alınmıştır. Araştırmanın amacı, küresel doğan işletmelerin uluslararası girişimcilik yöneliminin bir boyutu olarak proaktif olmalarını etkileyen faktörleri tespit etmektir. Araştırmada, Sakarya ilinde, farklı sektörlerde bulunan, yedi küresel doğan işletme tespit edilmiş ve nitel araştırma yöntemi kullanılarak incelenmiştir. Araştırmanın amacına ve niteliğine uygun olarak örnek olay deseni tercih edilmiştir. Verilerin analiz sürecinde Nvivo 8 yazılımından faydalanılmıştır. Araştırma sonucunda, küresel doğan işletmelerin proaktif olmalarını etkileyen faktörler; fuarlar, bilgi, bilgi kaynakları, yönetici özellikleri, ağ bağlantıları ve güven olmak üzere altı başlık altında toplanmış ve açıklanmıştır.
