Ad usum privatum

A part of the Special Collections of Utrecht University Library is a file of parchment fragments collected as flyleaves from the early printed books. Little is known about this fragmented material apart from the fact that they were discarded in the early modern period and re-used within the books of known titles. Among these was a number of related fragments from a breviary, which turned out to be parts of the benedictine monastic breviary of the former benedictine foundation of St. Paul's Abbey in Utrecht. This breviary was dated back to the 12th century and connected with St. Paul's golden age and the period of its intense contacts with Germanic benedictine monasteries within a reform movement. The paper contains critical transcription of all the fragments with commentary and furthermore a structural analysis of its liturgical contents and a paleographic analysis of its script and layers of usage. Altogether two different parts of breviary were identified - proper of the saints for the end of June and beginning of July and a common of saints pertaining to a single martyr and multiple martyrs.

The Royal Library in Copenhagen contains a small collection of illuminated single leaves and cuttings. Their provenance varies, but with few exceptions most of them have entered the library in fairly recent times, in the 1950s and 1960s.
A single illuminated leaf of considerable importance carries a large, full-page miniature with a “Resurrection” signed by Apollonio de’ Bonfratelli, who from 1556 was the official illuminator of the Sistine Chapel and Sacristy in the Vatican. According to the library accession register it was bought in 1959 from the British  antiquarian and bibliophile Alan G. Thomas. The Copenhagen miniature is an important addition to the relatively small oeuvre of Apollonio. For stylistic reasons this miniature can be placed in the period of Pius V’s popedom (1566–1572).
Two single illuminated leaves once belonged to a precious Breviary  executed for Leonello d’Este, Marquis of Ferrara between 1441 and 1450. The interesting history of the Breviary is fairly well known. Many of the leaves of the Breviary have decorations with filigree and flowers as the two in Copenhagen here attributed to Giorgio d’Alemagna.

El artículo estudia la reforma del Oficio divino emprendida por los canónigos de San Isidoro de León en el siglo XV a través del Breviario Ms. 36 (cód. XXXVI) del Archivo San Isidoro de León. El autor comienza describiendo los elementos externos del códice. Examina luego el contenido de sus secciones más relevantes, a fin de establecer su filiación litúrgica en el marco del rito romano y sus particularidades. Finalmente confronta los datos obtenidos con la información histórica contemporánea al breviario, para poder interpretar su significado en la trayectoria vital de San Isidoro.

Fototipsko izdanje codexa BnF Latin 916, rukopisa koji sadrži razne službe, vjerovatno mise, poeziju, prozu i hagiografiju raznih svetaca. Porijeklo je vezano za Francusku a autorstvo njegovih djelova pripisuje se nadbiskupu barskom Guillermu Adamu. Djelo je nastalo u XIV vijeku.

The topic of this paper is the non-verbal language in the celebration of the Liturgy of the Hours. A celebration that today is unbalanced especially on the verbal lenguage,  but which since tradition also involves the body which is a fundamental element of the celebration itself.

Questo contributo parla del linguaggio non-verbale nella celebrazione della Liturgia delle Ore; una celebrazione che oggi è sbilanciata soprattutto sul verbale, sulla "recitazione", ma che sin dalla tradizione prevede anche il coinvolgimento del corpo che è elemento fondamentale della celebrazione stessa.

Damos a conocer un fragmento de códice litúrgico, copiado hacia finales del siglo XII o los primeros años del XIII, que contiene parcialmente las lecciones de maitines para el Oficio de San Clemente y cuyos textos se tomaron de la pasión de este santo según la versión contenida en el Pasionario Hispánico, aunque se inscribe ya en la liturgia romana, incluyendo diversos cantos y textos musicales con notación aquitana.

Estudio y edición crítica de un fragmento de Breviario bajomedieval escrito en lengua latina, preservado en el Archivo Municipal de Loja (Granada, España). Es un manuscrito que apareció descontextualizado; es el fragmento inconexo que ha quedado de un antiguo códice medieval que nos es desconocido. Es el segundo manuscrito litúrgico cristiano publicado en lo que fue el territorio del antiguo Reino nazarí de Granada, actualmente parte de Andalucía. Se aborda la localización, accesibilidad y difusión del manuscrito; la descripción del manuscrito; la descripción litúrgica; la tipología codicológica y litúrgica; los aspectos musicales; hipótesis sobre su datación; se aborda una hipótesis sobre el origen y la historia del manuscrito, y finalmente, se edita el texto latino.

Ms. 1117 of the Montserrat Library is a 13th-century Cistercian breviary
from the Monastery of San Clemente in Toledo. Its guard sheets,
belonging to a cursus romanus breviary with musical notation from the
late 12th century, were recently detached and have been registered with
the signature Ms. 1601. This paper presents a transcription of the text
and a liturgical study of the two sections of its content: Sexagesima and
the first ferias of the second week of Lent. On the basis of a comparative
analysis of the responsories, antiphons and readings, it is postulated that the breviary may have originated in the bishopric of Béziers, in the old ecclesiastical province of Narbonne.

L-Asparaginase (L-ASPase) is known as a potent anti-cancer drug against L-Asparagine-auxotroph tumor cells. In this study, an endophytic L-ASPase producing bacterium of the genus Bervibacillus from the root of Glycyrrhiza glabra was screened and characterized. After purification of the enzyme by ammonium sulfate precipitation, dialysis, and silica gel column chromatography, anti-cancer studies were performed against MRC-5 (normal lung cells) and U937 cell (leukemia cell line). Additionally, optimization fermentation was performed in terms of significant variables screened from a one-factor-at-the-time (OFAT) approach. The interactions of different experimental parameters were investigated using the response surface methodology (RSM) with the central composite design (CCD) algorithm. Cytotoxicity study showed that the dose-dependent effect of the L-ASPase at 100 IU/ml had a lethality of about 80% against leukemia cells. Therefore, the IC 50 of the enzyme for leukemia cells was calculated to be approximately 33.54 IU/ml. Interestingly, the cytotoxicity of L-ASPase against normal lung cells was only about 20% at L-ASPase activity of 60-100 IU/ml. Based on the quadratic model, the optimal fermentation conditions were predicted to be 2% glucose, 2% NaCl, pH7, and incubation temperature 30 °C. Under these conditions, the highest enzyme activity was 90 IU/ml, which had an efficiency of about 30% compared to non-optimized conditions. The results showed that L-ASPase isolated from Brevibacterium sp. M-R21 with selective cytotoxicity against the leukemia cell line may be a potential candidate as an anti-cancer drug after further study.

The canonical community established in the monastery of Saint Isidor of Leon from the middle of the 12th century effectuated a singular reform of the Divine Office in the latter part of the 15th century, almost unknown to researchers. This article, on the one hand, will attempt to present the criteria adopted in the reform using the ms. 36 from the Archivo de la Real Colegiata. This breviary, copied in 1475 commissioned by Abbot Juan Álvarez de Valdesalce (1458-1482), constitutes an exceptional testimony that permits the deciphering of the modus operandi of the Isidorian canons in the renovation of the two principal liturgical sections: Proper of the Time and Proper of Saints. On the other hand, the author will examine the historical documentation in order to identify the motives that pursuaded the Leonese canons to embrace the liturgical tradition of the congregation of Saint Rufus of Avignon.

The library of Montserrat Abbey has a 14th-century Romano-Toledan breviary of unknown provenance registered under the signature Ms. 880. It was first described in 1969 by Revd. Alexandre Olivar, and its importance is due to a large extent to its being the oldest known plenary breviary of the diocese of Toledo. This paper describes the manuscript and offers a comparative analysis of some of its most representative elements with the aim of presenting the features of this exemplar and the liturgical codification carried out in the Castilian see at that time in history.

Abstract

This study looks at a series of internal stational processions at Sens Cathedral. Both the Christmas and Easter processions used similar trajectories with interesting, potentially  symbolic differences.  Also interesting was the fact that Sens' account books (as studied by J. Rouillard) show that the proceeds from the two altars used in the processions went for the production of bread and the maintenance of two water mills just south of town (remnants of which can still be seen today).
