Byzantine Mistras

The article considers mask motif in Byzantine and Western medieval
art looking through a prism of parallels and prototypes in antiquity.
A special attention is given to masks framing images of Evangelists on
the medaillons in the church of the Virgin Pantanassa in Mistra (1428).
There are no direct analogy for its interpretation and iconography in
the context of temple painting in Byzantine or Western medieval art,
though its archetype can be traced back to antiquity. It can be found in
antique imagery of masks and personifications which got the new life in
Byzantium during the periods of revival of special interest in antiquity,
acquiring new gradations of meaning in Christian art.

This chapter throws new light on the known accessories and
jewellery that are exhibited in the Museum of Mystras. Although
traditionally connected with the Byzantine settlement,
most of them lack a definite archaeological context. Comparative
objects from a wide geographical area, archival data
and pictorial sources help to attribute the small finds from
Mystras, which were part of burials or found as stray finds in
the area of the Byzantine town.

The paper aims at clarifying the identity of Isabelle de Lusignan, wife to Manuel Cantakuzenos, Despot,
Head of Mistra in the latter half of 14th c. Isabelle’s presence at Mistras’ court left behind churches, palaces
and other material evidence connected to her. These artifactsshare characteristics of western taste a fact
viewed as natural that solidifies the connection to Isabelle since she is considered a westerner of the French
family of the Lusignans. A more detailed reading of her personal history reveals her as a princess more
related to the Armenian kingdom of Cilicia, born by a mother of Byzantine-Orthodox origin and raised in
Thessaloniki in the court of the Armenian Margarita-Rita, the Byzantine empress. Her ties to Thessaloniki
are proven by the property she inherited from her father, Guy de Lusignan who had served as governor of
Serres in Byzantium and later became King of Armenia as Constantine II. The analysis brings about the
multicultural character of the multifaceted society in the SE Mediterranean after the time of the crusades
and calls into question issues of “western taste” in the period’s material culture. Isabellestandsoutbecause

Οι ανασκαφές που έχουν πραγματοποιηθεί ως τώρα στο λόφο του Μυστρά είναι εξαιρετικά περιορισμένες σε αριθμό και έκταση. Ο παλαιότερος μελετητής του χώρου, ο εταίρος της Γαλλικής Αρχαιολογικής Σχολής των Αθηνών Gabriel Millet, προέβη στις πρώτες διερευνητικές τομές στη δεκαετία του 1890, φέρνοντας στην επιφάνεια μεταξύ άλλων συλημένους και ασύλητους τάφους. Σε αυτούς προστέθηκε μία δεύτερη ομάδα ύστερα από τις ανασκαφές του Αδ. Αδαμαντίου κατά την πρώτη και δεύτερη δεκαετία του 20ού αι. και από "μικράν τινά εκσκαφήν" του Αν. Ορλάνδου στο ναό των Αγίων Θεοδώρων το 1935. Ωστόσο, η συντριπτική πλειοψηφία των τάφων που είναι σήμερα γνωστοί από την πόλη του Μυστρά προέκυψε από τις συστηματικές ανασκαφές του καθηγητή Ν. Δρανδάκη στο διάστημα 1952–1959. Έκτοτε μόνο τυχαία ευρήματα έχουν έλθει στο φως, κυρίως κατά τη διάρκεια αναστηλωτικών εργασιών.

Σκοπός της εργασίας που ακολουθεί είναι η συγκέντρωση και συνολική παρουσίαση των έως σήμερα δημοσιευθέντων στοιχείων που αφορούν τους τάφους και τις ταφές εντός των τειχών του Μυστρά . Αναλύονται η θέση, η τυπολογία, η κατασκευή, ο διάκοσμος, τα κτερίσματα και εν γένει το περιεχόμενο τόσο των χώρων ενταφιασμού των νεκρών (εντοπισθέντων ή αναφερομένων στις πηγές) όσο και των οστεοφυλακίων. Η εξέταση της αρχιτεκτονικής και της ζωγραφικής των παρεκκλησίων, που κατά τους ερευνητές είχαν ταφικό χαρακτήρα, δεν περιλαμβάνεται στην παρούσα μελέτη, η οποία επικεντρώνεται στους τάφους που τυχόν κατασκευάστηκαν στο εσωτερικό τους.

The aim of this paper is the reconsideration of the ecclesiastic history
of Lacedaemonia during the period 1438/39-1460. It is attempted
to investigate the consequences of the Florentine Union in the ecclesiastical administration and the religious life of Lacedaemonia. This effort is hoped to clarify the attitude of the Bishops of Lacedaemonia towards the Florentine Decree.
