Physical activity is considered an important and determining factor for the cancer patient's physical well-being and quality of life. However, cancer treatment may disrupt the practice of physical activity, and the prevention of sedentary lifestyles in cancer survivors is imperative. The current study aimed at investigating self-reported physical activity behaviour, exercise motivation and information in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. Using a cross-sectional design, 451 patients (18-65 years) completed a questionnaire assessing pre-illness and present physical activity; motivation and information received. Patients reported a significant decline in physical activity from pre-illness to the time in active treatment (p<0.001). Purpose To examine the prevalence of exercise in head and neck cancer survivors and determine preliminary associations with quality of life (QoL), fatigue, and depression. Materials and methods Fifty-nine of 65 (91%) eligible head and neck cancer survivors recruited from an academic oncology clinic completed a self-administered survey including the modified Godin Leisure-Time Exercise Questionnaire and Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Head & Neck (FACT-H&N), which includes physical, social, emotional and functional well-being (FWB) as well as additional concerns, and the FACT-General (FACT-G). Medical variables were obtained by medical record review. Results The majority of participants were men (83%) and were Caucasian (92%), with mean age of 58±12.8. Cancer sites were primarily the oral cavity (24%), oropharynx (37%), or larynx (25%), with 20% being stage I, 7% stage II, 19% stage III, and 54% stage IV disease. Chemotherapy and/or radiation were ongoing in 14% of the participants. Half of the participants (51%) were diagnosed <6 months ago. Only three (5%) participants reported any vigorous exercise minutes (M=7.3±35.4), and only seven (12%) participants reported any moderate exercise minutes (M=19.5±70.6). Light exercise was reported by 26 (44%) (M=83.4±147.1). Only five (8.5%) participants were meeting current public health exercise guidelines. Partial correlations adjusting for age, medical comorbidity, and alcohol use showed that the total exercise minutes (i.e., light + moderate + vigorous) was positively associated with FWB (r=0.30, p=0.027), FACT-G (r=0.25, p=0.071), and FACT-H&N (r=0.26, p=0.064), was negatively associated with fatigue (r=−0.27, p=0.051), and had no association with depression (r=0.10, p=0.500). Conclusions Few head and neck cancer survivors are participating in any moderate or vigorous exercise, and over half are completely sedentary. Meaningful and potentially beneficial associations between total exercise minutes, QoL, and fatigue were demonstrated. An exercise intervention may have utility in this understudied cancer survivor group. Further research is warranted.

Given the increasing interest in quality of life research in cancer survivorship, psychometric properties of the Quality of Life-Cancer Survivors (QOL-CS) were explored in a group of childhood cancer survivors. The QOL-CS is a 41-item visual analog scale composed of four multi-item sub-scales (physical well-being, psychological well-being, social well-being, spiritual well-being) and two sub-components (fears, distress). This instrument was incorporated in a mailed survey completed by 177 respondents. The underlying factor structure and internal reliability of the instrument were explored. A preliminary assessment of the external validity of the factor structure was undertaken. Results of a factor analysis were theoretically consistent with elements assessed in the QOL-CS, although misclassification of several items was noted and discussed. We demonstrate the utility of partitioning the spiritual well-being (SpWB) construct into spiritual and religious components using results from a study of the relationship of existential well-being to health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in a sample of 237 cancer survivors. Existential and religious well-being were measured using the FACIT-Sp-12 and HRQOL was measured using the mental and physical component scores of the SF-12. In hierarchical linear regression analyses, existential well-being fully mediated religious well-being's effect on HRQOL and explained unique variance in both the mental and physical HRQOL domains, controlling for demographic, disease, and psychosocial variables previously shown to impact HRQOL. The introduction of a diagnosis such as cancer to an adolescent confounds an already stressful existence, as chronically ill adolescents face the same developmental tasks and challenges as healthy adolescents. Understanding and enhancing the unique coping strategies employed by teenagers is an important method to improve adjustment to cancer. Through two series of group therapy sessions for adolescents with cancer and their parents we discovered four primary challenges that adolescent cancer survivors face as well as various strategies that they use to cope with these challenges.

Background Despite the fact that the fear of cancer recurrence is to varying degrees almost universal in cancer survivors, there is a lack of validated multidimensional instruments to evaluate this issue specifically. Purpose The goal of this study was to develop and empirically validate a multidimensional self-report scale for assessing the fear of cancer recurrence, the Fear of Cancer Recurrence Inventory (FCRI). Methods A provincial medical databank was used to randomly select a pool of 1,704 French-Canadian patients who had been treated for breast, prostate, lung, and colorectal cancer within the past 10 years. Of these, 300 patients were asked to complete the FCRI on two occasions. Results The factorial analysis conducted on the final 42-item scale revealed a seven-component solution (64% of the variance) including the following factors: triggers, severity, psychological distress, coping strategies, functioning impairments, insight, and reassurance. The results also supported the internal consistency (α = 0.95) and the temporal stability (r = 0.89) of the FCRI, as well as its construct validity with other self-report scales assessing fear of cancer recurrence (r = 0.68 to 0.77) or related constructs such as psychological distress (r = 0.43 to 0.77) and quality of life (r = −0.20 to −0.36). Conclusions This study suggests that the French-Canadian version of the FCRI is a reliable and valid instrument for evaluating the multidimensional aspects of the fear of cancer recurrence.

The purpose of this study is to compare health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and emotional distress among diverse cancer survivors who had completed all treatment within the previous year. A convenience sample of 353 cancers survivors (lung, head and neck, breast and prostate cancers) were recruited to complete a survey, which consisted of (i) Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scales; (ii) Chinese version of the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy—General version; and (iii) demographic and clinical data. The HRQoL scores were similar among the four types of survivors. Mild anxiety and depression levels were reported, but no significant difference was noted. Younger females with financial burdens and uncertain prognosis were particularly associated with HRQoL and emotional distress. Further studies are essential to identify specific problems that cancer patients experience after cancer diagnosis that might lead to the early detection of those most at risk of ongoing problems.
