El estudio aborda la evolución del sistema de apellidos en el entorno rural de Navarra durante los siglos XVI y XVII, centrándose en la transformación del apellido de un mero topónimo a una designación de filiación paterna. Durante este período, se observa un cambio significativo: el apellido deja de asociarse con el lugar de origen y comienza a representar la descendencia paterna, reflejando una transición hacia el sistema patrilineal que conocemos en la actualidad. La movilidad geográfica y las variaciones en las normas de transmisión de apellidos generaron dificultades para identificar personas y reconstruir grupos familiares. La importancia del solar de origen en la identidad familiar se destaca, así como el papel del derecho de vecindad como un indicador clave para situar a los individuos en su contexto. A medida que se consolida el sistema de apellidos paternos, se observa una mayor estabilidad en la identificación de sujetos, aunque persisten algunas irregularidades. Además, se examina el caso específico de la casa de Leyún para ilustrar cómo las dinámicas familiares y patrimoniales influyeron en la transmisión de apellidos y en la evolución de la identidad familiar en la región. Este estudio contribuye a comprender las complejas interacciones entre estructuras familiares, sistemas de apellidos y contextos socioeconómicos en la Navarra rural de los siglos XVI y XVII.

The practice of changing the name of an individual is attested in ancient literature, papyri and inscriptions, which constitute the basis for the present analysis. These changes can be divided into different groups, among which the following are singled: name changes of slaves; name changes as a consequence of changes in status or of “Hellenisation” and “Romanisation”; name changes in cases of conversion from one religion to another, in particular by Christians. The aim of the paper is to examine some examples of each kind and to find out the possible reasons for the substitution of one name by a new one.

The use of our names is a common phenomenon. The name itself wins recognition in the world of law through the regulation of names, and if life goes on its normal way there are rarely questions about wearing a name. One of these rare cases is when we change our name. This happens most often in case of marriage, which was a problem confronted only by women until the recent years. From l January 2004 the husband (groom) can adopt the name of the wife (bride) individually or they can interlace their names into a double marital name. In this study I try to present the changing of names through the presentation of regulations from the end of the XIX. Century until nowadays, putting the accent on the development of the history of law. The beginning of the period in case is not a coincidence, because in 1894 were created the so-called spiritual-political laws, which caused an important change in the domain of the regulation of names too.
