A community – including a classroom – has a ‘climate’, and ample data shows that these are too often uncomfortable for, even inhospitable to, the members of certain groups, especially women and black and minority ethnic students and colleagues. After explaining the concept of a ‘chilly climate’, I explain some of the ways that they are generated by our behaviours, and what we can do to try to make these climates more hospitable for everyone.
