Christian witness

Pour un cinquième de l’Église mondiale, le leadership s’exerce dans un contexte de persécution. Si la persécution et le leadership suscitent l’un et l’autre un intérêt croissant tant parmi les érudits que chez un public plus profane, il a été jusqu’ici mené peu de recherches au carrefour de ces deux domaines d’études, qui portent sur l’expérience du leadership face à la persécution. Cet article en appelle à une étude consciente et approfondie du leadership chrétien dans ce dernier contexte, qui prenne en compte les défis du témoignage à Jésus-Christ en pareilles circonstances, des perspectives bibliques, de la pertinence des théories du leadership et des profits à en retirer pour l’Église mondiale, notamment pour les communautés persécutées, pour les missionnaires et pour ceux jouissant d’un degré plus important de liberté religieuse. La théorie du leadership de Robert E. Quinn est un exemple de modèle de recherche prometteur, testé dans le cadre de l’étude du leadership de l’église Meserete Kristos, en Éthiopie, entre 1974 et 1991.

Awareness of the narrative nature of educational formation can develop Christian professionals. Attempting to answer the question “what is worldview,” opens up new possibilities for truly holistic education of undergraduates, in particular, and to sponsor their responsible discipleship in the professions. We will indicate the thesis’s applicability in sample settings: post-baccalaureate teacher education, doctoral-level ethics courses and settings beyond the university.

Η μελέτη του θεολογικού έργου του νυν Αρχιεπισκόπου Τιράνων, Δυρραχίου και πάσης Αλβανίας Αναστασίου αναδεικνύει την ιστορική του συμβολή στην αναζωπύρωση της ορθόδοξης ιεραποστολής κατά τη μεταπολεμική περίοδο. Στο θεολογικό του έργο προβάλλει με επιστημονική τεκμηρίωση την ιεραποστολική αυτοσυνειδησία της Εκκλησίας και την οικουμενικότητα του χριστιανικού μηνύματος. Το έργο αυτό αποτελεί σε μεγάλο βαθμό τη θεολογική θεμελίωση της εν Χριστώ μαρτυρίας στον σύγχρονο κόσμο και εμπνέει για την ιεραποστολική κινητοποίηση των Ορθοδόξων.
Ένα άλλο σημαντικό στοιχείο της προσφοράς του είναι η αρμονική συλλειτουργία της θεολογικής μαρτυρίας και της εκκλησιαστικής έμπρακτης ιεραποστολικής εργασίας. Στα κείμενα του Αρχιεπισκόπου, καθώς και στην εκκλησιαστική του δράση, διάχυτη είναι η προσπάθειά του οι χριστιανοί να βιώσουν και να μεταλαμπαδεύσουν το φως του Χριστού σε όλο τον κόσμο. Επίσης, έκδηλοι είναι οι αγώνες του να παρακινήσει τις Χριστιανικές Εκκλησίες, προκειμένου να δώσουν τεκμηριωμένες απαντήσεις απέναντι στα παγκόσμια προβλήματα της σύγχρονης εποχής.
Η παρούσα εργασία έχει ως σκοπό να μελετήσει τη θεολογία της Ορθόδοξης μαρτυρίας, όπως αυτή θεμελιώνεται στο συγγραφικό έργο του Αρχιεπισκόπου Αναστασίου. Επιπλέον, επιδιώκει να ερευνήσει τον τρόπο με τον οποίο ο Αρχιεπίσκοπος κωδικοποίησε το μήνυμα της οικουμενικότητας της Εκκλησίας στη σύγχρονη εποχή και να καταγράψει τα θεολογικά επιχειρήματα που συνέβαλαν στο νεότερο ιεραποστολικό ξεκίνημα στο τέλος της δεκαετίας του ’50.

Respect for persons has been widely acknowledged and discussed as a key moral dimension in education and teaching English to speakers of other languages. Christians believe in this value, particularly as it is articulated within scripture and tradition. Recent critics, however, seem to perceive a basic incompatibility between a Christian religious imperative to bear witness to one’s faith and a moral imperative to respect other persons. Beginning from an argument that all teaching is teaching for change, this essay makes a case that the two are not only not contradictory, but in fact should be consanguineous. Key issues explored include what it means to believe in absolute truths, why such belief paradoxically requires humility, and the moral/interpersonal conditions for witnessing and conversion.

Today, Christians from different traditions increasingly encounter and engage with one another. They meet across denominational, regional,
national, ethnic and cultural boundaries. In many places members of different churches and inter-church organizations are coming together over shared concerns, such as social and ethical questions, ecularization, or the challenges of minority status or persecution.

Under persecution during the Ethiopian Revolution (1974-1991), highly committed men and women led the Meserete Kristos Church (MKC) through remarkable transformation and growth. Although persecution has been an enduring reality in the global church, leadership in that context has received scant research attention. Drawing on interviews and other first-person accounts of faithful MKC leaders in the Derg era, this essay explores the dynamics of their experience using the leadership theory of Robert E. Quinn as a conceptual lens. Persecution forced MKC leaders to clarify the priority of their commitment to Jesus and the mission of the church. Prepared to die for the sake of the gospel, they demonstrated leadership marked by a highly effective pursuit of purpose, compelling integrity under pressure, attractive love, and remarkable creativity—leading to extraordinary results. Between 1974 and 1991 the Meserete Kristos Church (MKC)—an Anabaptist Christian renewal movement in Ethiopia—experienced a profound transformation. Under pressure from a Marxist regime bent on eradicating evangelical Christianity from the country, the MKC grew from 800 to 34,000 baptized members, greatly expanded its geographic reach, dramatically increased the pool of people in active ministry, became financially self-supporting, adopted a radically new ministry structure, and nurtured a contagious spiritual vitality among its members. A remarkable group of leaders—both men and women—played an essential role in this transformation, leading the MKC with courageous purpose, integrity, love, and creativity. This essay, based largely on extensive interviews with twenty-four MKC leaders, explores the dynamics of leadership that enabled the MKC not only to survive but also to flourish under circumstances of persecution and extreme hardship. Research participants were selected based on the recommendations of various people with personal knowledge of MKC

For one-fifth of the global church, leadership is exercised in contexts of persecution. Despite growing popular and scholarly interest in both persecution and leadership, there has been little dialogue between these fields or investigation into the experience of persecuted leaders. This article calls for intentional, sustained study of Christian leadership under persecution, considering the challenges of faithful witness to Jesus Christ under such conditions, biblical perspectives, the relevance of leadership theory, and benefits for the global church – including persecuted communities, missionaries and those who enjoy significant religious freedom. The leadership theory of Robert E. Quinn is one example of a promising research model tested in relation to the case of Meserete Kristos Church leadership in Ethiopia from 1974 to 1991.

Dieser Artikel bespricht aus historischer, empirischer und theologischer Perspektive das Glaubenszeugnis durch protestantische Christen in der Türkei. An einen historischen Abriss von den Anfängen im Osmanischen Reich um 1820 bis heute schließt sich eine Übersicht über die Vielfalt der Formen christlichen Zeugnisses heute an. Die Wirkung dieses Zeugnisses wird anhand kurzer exemplarischer Berichte illustriert, die das persönliche Erleben türkischer Konvertiten vom Islam zum christlichen Glauben wiedergeben. In den abschließenden theologischen Überlegungen und praktischen Empfehlungen plädiert der Autor für die Berechtigung und Notwendigkeit eines christlichen Glaubenszeugnisses in der Türkei, das aber nicht nur von Jesus Christus Zeugnis ablegt, sondern auch wie er, nämlich in Schwachheit und mit opferbereiter
Liebe.

Lo sviluppo della teologia missionaria, anche cattolica, le critiche al modello coloniale della "seconda partenza" dopo il congresso di Berlino alla fine del XIX secolo, le resistenze alla conversione soprattutto nei paesi dell'Asia nonostante i progetti di Edimburgo 1910, la progressiva scristianizzazione dei paesi di antica cristianità, il rifiuto dei missionari stranieri nel tempo della decolonizzazione, portarono la coscienza ecclesiale a rivedere le finalità e i compiti della azione missionaria. Il Vaticano II con il decreto Ad Gentes (1965) ha offerto un nuovo orientamento alla responsabilità missionaria della Chiesa individuando un nuovo quadro di insieme della "azione missionaria" soprattutto nel suo cap. II. Tuttavia immediatamente dopo la celebrazione del sinodo vaticano la teologia e la pratica missionaria hanno elaborato ulteriori proposte di animazione missionaria. A vol-te si è giunti a mettere in discussione la tradizionale interpretazione del "manda-to missionario". Proposte che sono state vagliate soprattutto nella esortazione Evangelii Nuntiandi (1975). In questo quadro il Codex Jus Canonici del 1983 propone una descrizione del compito missionario come responsabilità propria della Chiesa locale, inserendola dentro il munus docendi, come responsabilità condivisa di tutto il popolo di Dio.

El liderazgo de una quinta parte de la Iglesia global tiene lugar en contextos de persecución. A pesar del creciente interés general y académico por la persecución y el liderazgo, el diálogo entre estos campos o la investigación de la experiencia de los líderes perseguidos son muy escasos. El presente artículo pide un estudio deliberado y continuo del liderazgo cristiano bajo persecución, que deberá tomar en cuenta los problemas para dar un testimonio fiel de Jesucristo en tales condiciones, las perspectivas bíblicas, la importancia de la teoría de liderazgo y los beneficios para la Iglesia global —las comunidades perseguidas, los misioneros y aquellos que gozan de una importante libertad de religión deberán ser incluidos—. La teoría de liderazgo de Robert E. Quinn es un ejemplo de un modelo de investigación prometedor evaluado con relación al caso del liderazgo de la iglesia Meserete Kristos en Etiopía entre 1974 y 1991.

Τὰ κείμενα ποὺ τὸν ἀπαρτίζουν δὲν παρουσιάζουν μόνο τὴ συμβολὴ τοῦ τιμωμένου. Κάνουν καὶ κάτι περισσότερο ἀπὸ αὐτό: Συνθέτουν ἕνα σπάνιο δεῖγμα κριτικῆς σεβαστικῆς θεολόγησης. Τί ἐννοῶ λέγοντας «κριτικῆς σεβαστικῆς θεολόγη-σης»; Ὁ Ἰωάννης Ζηζιούλας ἀπὸ νωρὶς διατύ-πωσε θεολογικὲς προτάσεις πολὺ «δικές του», πολὺ χαρακτηριστικές, μὲ μιὰ ἀνα-βράζουσα σκέψη, ἡ ὁποία θέλει νὰ πατᾶ στὴν παράδοση καὶ νὰ μιλᾶ στὸ σήμερα. Ὁ λόγος του λοιπὸν ἔχει μεγάλη ὁρμή. Γι' αὐτὸ καὶ πολλοὶ ταυτίζονται μαζί του, καὶ τὸν ἐπαναλαμβάνουν. Αὐτὸ εἶναι καὶ φυ-σικὸ καὶ ἀνθρώπινο (πράγμα τὸ ὁποῖο γνωρίζει καὶ ὁ ἴδιος· βλ. σ. 333). Βεβαίως, ὑπάρχουν καὶ πολλοὶ οἱ ὁποῖοι διαφωνοῦν μαζί του. Κι αὐτὸ εἶναι φυσικὸ κι ἀναμε-νόμενο, εἴτε γίνεται γιὰ θεολογικοὺς λό-γους εἴτε γίνεται ἀπὸ τὸν φθόνο ἐκείνων ποὺ νομίζουν ὅτι ψηλώνουν κονταίνοντας τοὺς ἄλλους. Φρονῶ ὅμως ὅτι τὸ ἰδιαίτε-ρο στὴν περίπτωση τοῦ Ζηζιούλα εἶναι κά-τι πέρα ἀπὸ αὐτά (κάτι πέρα ἀπὸ τὴ σκέ-τη ταύτιση ἢ τὴ σκέτη ἀπόρριψη). Τὸ ἰδι-αίτερο εἶναι τὸ ὅτι δύναται κανεὶς νὰ δια-φωνήσει μὲ ὁρισμένα συμπεράσματα τοῦ Ζηζιούλα, ὄχι ἁπλῶς ἐπειδὴ ἔχει διαφορε-τικὰ θεολογικὰ προτάγματα, ἀλλὰ ἀκρι-βῶς ἐπειδὴ ἐμπνέεται ἀπὸ θεολογήσεις τοῦ Ζηζιούλα! Αὐτὸ τὸ θεωρῶ μαθητεία γόνιμη, ἡ ὁ-ποία ἐκβάλλει σὲ κριτικὴ σεβαστικὴ θεο-λόγηση. The study of the journal, named Porefthedes (Go Ye) emphasizes its historic contribution to the transmission and intake of the Gospel's message worldwide. Additionally, it resulted in the recrudescence of Greeks' interest in The Mission. The current Archbishop of Tirana and all Albania Anastasios was the founder of this journal. The former, Porefthedes, arose from the processes of "Syndesmos" (Association) in 1959, and was published from 1961 up to 1969 under the care of the "Inter-Orthodox Missionary Centre Porefthedes", setting the foundations for the revival of The Mission. This paper's first attempt is to record the journal's publishing history and secondly to describe the publication process of the journal Porefthedes (artistic elaboration, linguistic means) and to investigate the specific features of the editors (transmitters); it also provides facts concerning the readers (receivers). Moreover, the theological documentation of the Orthodox martyria (message) has been recorded, divided into thematic categories.

He claims that Christian witness needs contemplation, because contemplation reveals the truth about the nature of reality; it is this truth which is one of the factors that constitute the foundation of Christian faith. The text presents some difficulties of common Christian witness. The witness is an essential element of Christian faith. Without it, faith would be just a collection of religious truths or moral precepts, but could not mobilize people to change their own lives under the influence of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. However, the common Christian witness is very difficult because of divisions among Christians themselves. The first difficulty is the visible division of Christianity: Churches and Communities fought against each other in the past. These religious conflicts had disastrous consequences for Christian witness today, especially in missionary areas. Other difficulties are some serious differences in doctrinal and ethical teaching, which divide Churches and Communities preaching the same Gospel of Christ. The article proposes a reflection on these difficulties and suggests some possible solutions. Firstly, a stronger ecumenical dialogue is needed to reconcile Christian denominations and especially to eliminate any activities that cast doubt on the authenticity of the faith of other Churches and Communities. Secondly, Churches and Communities need a critical reflection on their own dogmatic and ethical traditions in order to separate these parts of their teaching which are transient or outdated. A strong Christian witness in this world is possible, if Churches and Communities are able to critically examine their own teaching and practice.
