Quite often, when people hear the word “trigger” in a therapeutic context, one may immediately think of substance use and “relapse triggers”. Although substance use is part of this discussion for this exercise, it is important to consider that the idea of feeling “triggered” can also relate to many mental and emotional situations and disorders.

Understanding young adults' anxiety requires applying a multidimensional approach to assess the psychosocial, behavioral, and cognitive aspects of this phenomenon. A hypothesized model of the relationships among coping style, thinking style, life satisfaction, social support, and selected demographics and anxiety among college students was tested using path analysis. A total of 257 undergraduate students aged 18-24 years completed an online survey. The independent variables were measured using the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support, the Brief Students' Multidimensional Life Satisfaction Scale, the Brief COPE Inventory, the Positive Automatic Thoughts Questionnaire, and the Cognition Checklist-Anxiety. This article reviews the various settings in which infants, children, and adolescents experience pain during acute medical procedures and issues related to referral of children to pain management teams. In addition, self-report, reports by others, physiological monitoring, and direct observation methods of assessment of pain and related constructs are discussed and recommendations are provided. Pharmacological, other medical approaches, and empirically supported cognitive behavioral interventions are reviewed. Salient features of the interventions are discussed, and recommendations are made for necessary components of effective treatment interventions.

Визначено основні чинники результативності навчально-методичного супроводу опанування стресових і посттравматичних стресових станів засобами само- і взаємодопомоги курсантами – військовими психологами першого курсу навчання і магістрантами. За авторською анкетою проведено порівняльний аналіз самооцінювання їхніх умінь та первинних навичок, а також здатності надавати психологічну допомогу в цьому особовому складі. Використано також методи включеного спостереження, індивідуального консультування, співбесіди з учасниками для отримання від них зворотного зв’язку. Як основні серед чинників результативності навчально-методичного супроводу визначено активність, мотивацію, спрямованість та командну згуртованість курсантів. З’ясовано, що останній чинник у першокурсників проявився більшою мірою, ніж у магістрантів: першокурсники були більш зацікавленими в самопідготовці і дещо активнішими під час аудиторних занять. Хоч і магістранти, і першокурсники засвідчили, що отримали основні базові знання й уміння та зможуть самостійно їх застосовувати у своїй професійній діяльності, однак рівень засвоєння технологій у першокурсників загалом вищий, ніж у магістрантів. Встановлено, що курсанти оволоділи груповими техніками зняття стресових і посттравматичних стресових станів і зможуть скористатися ними під час проведення занять з особовим складом. Завдяки проведеному самооцінюванню з’ясовано, що вони засвоїли основні тілесно зорієнтовані та дихальні психотехнології зняття стресових і посттравматичних стресових станів у різних зонах тіла. При цьому показники першокурсників за всіма позиціями дещо вищі, ніж у магістрантів. Разом з тим кожен четвертий із числа курсантів-магістрантів засвідчив, що не отримав необхідних знань та умінь і не зможе самостійно застосовувати запропоновані технології у своїй професійній діяльності. Ще майже кожен третій магістрант зазначив, що запропоновані технології видалися йому малоефективними. Аналіз анкетних відповідей цих учасників показав, що вони набули певних знань та умінь, проте потребують більше пояснень, додаткових знань та вмінь і тренінгових вправ для посилення впевненості у собі та власних фахових компетенціях. На відміну від магістрантів, у всіх першокурсників оцінки засвоєння та ефективності цих технологій були позитивними. Встановлено, що понад половину учасників занять мають потребу в отриманні додаткових знань та умінь щодо застосування запропонованих технологій. Також з’ясовано, що участь у спецкурсі стала стимулом для вдосконалення фахової психологічної підготовки його учасників. З’ясовано, що у першокурсників ця потреба є більш вираженою, ніж у магістрів. Фактична здатність ефективно застосовувати набуті учасниками знання та вміння може бути визначена лише під час їхньої практичної діяльності, тому результативність навчально-методичного супроводу потребує дослідження під час стажування у військах та під час практичної роботи з особовим складом за місцем проходження служби.

Psychological distress has been considered a key component in the psychosocial functioning and functional disability of the elderly, but the determining factors of social functioning and psychological distress in the elderly people are not yet fully known. The aim of this study is to perform a gender analysis of the relevance of psychological distress and psychosocial factors in the social functioning of the elderly. A cross-sectional study with a sample of 589 men and 684 women from the general Spanish population aged between 65 and 94 years was conducted. All participants were evaluated through questionnaires and scales that assess psychological distress, social functioning, stress, coping styles, self-esteem and social support. Results: Women scored higher than men in psychological distress, chronic stress, emotional coping and instrumental social support, whereas men scored higher than women in self-esteem and rational coping. Psychological distress was significantly associated in women and men with worse social functioning, which was also lower in older people and in women with lower self-esteem. Psychological distress has a considerable impact on the social functioning of the elderly, and gender is a relevant factor in the psychological distress experienced and its predictors.

This research examined the contributions of active and passive coping for health problems, and meaning-based coping, to positive psychosocial functioning in a sample of 100 individuals in residential care with a mean age of 83.11 years old. Study participants resided in skilled care, intermediate care, or assisted living facilities. Based on interview data collected on site in participants' residential settings, hierarchical multiple regression analyses revealed that active and passive coping and meaning-based coping had separate influences on measures of positive psychosocial functioning. Active coping was correlated with higher positive affect, whereas passive coping was associated with higher negative affect and self-acceptance. Because the war was relatively brief, casualties relatively light, and the Nation sanctioned the war socially, veterans of Desert Shield/Storm and their families were not anticipated to suffer symptoms of trauma or re-entry stress beyond that expected in routine peacetime military deployments. However, the authors argue that the stress imposed on families by Desert Shield/Storm was not analogous to that of routine deployments. The call to duty was unexpected, disruptive, and “hazardous” (i.e., highly dangerous) which places it in the category of a “catastrophic” stressor as defined by McCubbin and Figley (1983). The deployment was a call to war, which creates unique stress beyond those experienced during peacetime deployments. The deployment also carried with it prolonged “anticipation of trauma.” For these reasons, the authors argue, the deployment to Desert Shield/Storm created a situation of “family trauma” for veterans and their families. Suggestions are offered for education, prevention and treatment for families undergoing unexpected wartime military deployments.

In an exploratory study, the relationships between two major concepts in psychological adjustment, coping strategies and defense mechanisms, were investigated. Sport competition is an example of a real-world context in which to investigate people’s responses to stressful situations. The extent to which participants reported different uses of coping strategies and defense mechanisms was assessed in terms of performance. Twenty-six elite kayakers were classified into one of two groups, depending on the discrepancy between their standard performance and their performance in competition. Correlations were found between the coping strategies of seeking social support, positive reappraisal/planful problem solving and mature defenses and between the coping strategy of distancing/avoidance and immature defenses. The results of multivariate and univariate analyses confirmed a significantly different use of coping strategies and defense mechanisms between the two performance groups. In light of these findings, certain recommendations in terms of methodology and application appear warranted. It seems important to take into account both coping strategies and defense mechanisms to improve the process of adjustment to sport performance.

INTRODUCTION Previous studies confirm the effect of collaborative assessment and management of suicidality (CAMS) in an experimental setup, but there is a need to test CAMS with regard to its effectiveness and feasibility in a real-life clinical context. The purpose of this study was to investigate CAMS in a Danish population in such a context. MATERIAL AND METHODS In the present descriptive study, CAMS treatment was administered to a total of 42 patients referred during 1 August 2008 to 30 September 2009 to The Centre of Excellence in Suicide Prevention due to suicidal thoughts or a suicide attempt. Qualitative and quantitative data were obtained before and after CAMS treatment. Five major suicidal markers were regularly assessed. Asian populations living in the United States share similar cultural values that influence their experiences with domestic violence. However, it is critical to recognize how differential cultural beliefs in the context of immigration and adjustment to life in the United States affect attitudes, interpretations, and response to domestic violence. This article discusses findings from community-based participatory action research that explores how Cambodian immigrant women talk about domestic violence, what forms of abuse contribute to domestic violence, and what strategies they use to cope with and respond to abuse in their lives. The richness of this research lies in the stories that immigrant women tell about their struggle and their strength in addressing domestic violence.

In diesem Open-Access-Buch wird die subjektive Wahrnehmung und Bewältigung von Armut im Kontext der strukturellen Einbindung der Betroffenen konzeptualisiert und erfasst. In einer reichen Gesellschaft arm zu sein, bedeutet nicht nur ein materielles Problem, sondern auch die Infragestellung der sozialen und gesellschaftlichen Zugehörigkeit der Betroffenen. Um dem zu entgehen, sind die Akteure auf voneinander abgrenzbare Kontexte in ihrem Netzwerk angewiesen, in denen sie Anerkennung und Teilhabe generieren können. Wer in dieser Lage auf sich selbst zurückgeworfen ist, erfährt Armut als die Zerstörung seiner bzw. ihrer Identität als respektables Mitglied der Gesellschaft. Der Kampf gegen die Armut darf daher nicht gegen die Armen geführt werden, sondern muss ein Kampf um Orte und Gelegenheiten sein, an denen wir zeigen können, dass es (auch) auf uns ankommt. Es zeigt sich, dass materielle Knappheit in Abhängigkeit der sozialen Einbindung unterschiedlich wahrgenommen wird. Die Bewältigungschancen verschlechtern sich, je weniger Gelegenheitsstrukturen zur Erreichung von Anerkennung und Teilhabe den Befragten in ihrem sozial-räumlichen Umfeld zur Verfügung stehen.

The ways in which children appraise and cope with school bullying are likely to influence the long-term outcomes experienced. To examine this possibility, 219 Spanish undergraduate students (73 male, 146 female) aged between 18 and 40, completed an adapted version of the Retrospective Bullying Questionnaire (RBQ; Schäfer et al., 2004) and a distress scale (Rivers, 1999). Results indicated that neither coping strategies reported by victims of bullying nor the match between control appraisal and coping strategy influenced levels of distress experienced as adults. Control, threat and challenge appraisals did, however, influence long-term distress. Explanations for these effects are discussed, and include the possibility that appraisals may directly influence levels of distress and the quality of emotions experienced by victims during the actual bullying episode.
