In this work, I present a collation of several humanistic manuscripts, specially the epistolary preface of Eustathius of Thessalonica’s (XII A.D.) Parekbolai on the Description of the Known World by Dionisius Periegetes (II A.D.). Furthermore, I give a global and shallow vision about both authors' lives and works.

En este trabajo se realiza la colación de varios manuscritos humanísticos, concretamente del prefacio epistolar de las Parekbolai a la Periégesis de Dionisio Periegeta (siglo II d. This work offers, through an analysis of literary and epigraphical sources, an overview of the use of the word periegetes since its first appearance in the first century B.C., including late interpretations and usages from the Byzantine and modern age. In particular, the problem of the use of the word to indicate the Hellinistic writers of historical and antiquarian works is addressed, considering the possibility that it was typical of the Roman Imperial period and connected to cultural phenomena widespread in this era. In addition, the use of periegetes for figures who accompany strangers during the visit of Greek cities and sanctuaries is discussed again, showing the differences among them and the difficulties in bringing together the sources, as is often done. In this context, special attention is paid to Plutarch of Chaeroneia, who mentions the word several times and in relation to different figures, so that it is possible to draw detailed profiles of these persons. The use of the term in epigraphies is also reconsidered: these are generally placed alongside literary evidence but seem indeed to give back a different image of the functions held by the mentioned characters. Finally, the relationship between periegetes and exegetes is addressed, especially in relation to Pausanias, who uses this latter word to indicate informants and written sources. Dans le passé et aujourd'hui encore, de nombreux savants ont essayé de reconstruire avec une précision toujours plus grande le portrait de Denys le Périégète et de situer son œuvre dans un contexte historique et culturel précis. Du point de vue littéraire et idéologique les aspects qui lient le poète à l'ère d'Adrien et tout particulièrement aux années du séjour de l'empereur en Egypte ont été mis en évidence à travers une analyse attentive du texte ou grâce à des indices. Notre parcours est différent. En comparant le texte de Denys et la traduction, ou mieux la ré-interprétation, d'Aviénus on a essayé de faire émerger les visions du monde empreintes dans les deux œuvres et dont les auteurs son de façon directe ou indirecte les porte-parole. Outre quelques précisions concernant les concessions poétiques des deux auteurs, on développera tout particulièrement les problèmes spécifiques relatifs à la géographie physique (la forme des terres habitées, l'amélioration des connaissances des zones septentrionales de l'Empire romain), relatifs à la géographie politique (les peuples et les villes entre les approfondissements et les omissions) et à la géographie religieuse (l'île Leucé et l'au-delà, l'importance d'Apollon et de Dionysos).

Taking into account the complex authorship of Pericles, Prince of Tyre, this paper surveys the intertextual influence of the Latin verse narrative of the Apollonius saga by Jacob Falckenburgk (London, 1578) and Thomas Twayne’s translation of Orbis terrae descriptio (The Surveye of the world) by Dionysius Periegetes (London, 1572) on the erratic geography of Pericles. Drawing on the Pericles/Apollonius tales (the play and its Latin verse and English prose intertexts), as well as the ancient geographic narrative describing the Eastern Mediterranean spaces of the settings, the play decentres the authority of ancient geography maintained via the well-travelled Apollonius tale or through the weight of classical texts. Pericles destabilizes the authority of both classical language and geography through a process of defamiliarization of and distancing from the legitimization of ancient texts and geographic tradition. Through the suggestion of alterity during the dramatic interaction, the play incorporates the recognition of difference and the support of tolerance within early modern transnational communities.
