Early medieval small finds

L’une des principales difficultés pour naviguer dans une base de données est d’arriver sur la bonne page : sur Artefacts, cela consiste à trouver l’ensemble de pages, puis la page que l’on recherche précisément. Ce mémo indique les différentes méthodes disponibles pour un utilisateur débutant, ou avancé, pour trouver le plus rapidement possible la page souhaitée.

Seußling (Gde. Altendorf, Lkr. Bamberg) wurde in der historischen Forschung bereits im 19. Jahrhundert als Ort einer der 14 Slawenkirchen diskutiert, die Karl der Große um 800 für die Main- und Regnitzwenden errichten ließ. Dank umfangreicher Ausgrabungen in den Jahren 1999 bis 2001 in und um die Kirche sowie in verschiedenen mittelalterlichen Siedlungsarealen zählt Seußling nun auch zu den wenigen in größerem Umfang archäologisch untersuchten Siedlungen des Frühmittelalters in Oberfranken.

Die große Materialbasis und komplexe Stratigrafie ermöglichten eine differenzierte Analyse der Siedlungsgenese vom 4./5. Jahrhundert bis in die Neuzeit, die hier vorgelegt wird.

Einen Hauptbestandteil der Studie bildet die ausgearbeitete Regionalchronologie der Keramik. Auf dieser Basis konnte ein vielschichtiges interdisziplinäres Bild der Strukturentwicklung der Siedlungskammer von der späten römischen Kaiserzeit bis in die Neuzeit gewonnen werden. Da die Siedlungs- und Baugeschichte in enger Wechselwirkung mit der Landschaftsentwicklung des Untersuchungsgebietes steht, flossen in besonderem Maße geografische und geoarchäologische Quellen in die Bearbeitung ein.

Various opening and closing systems existed in medieval architecture and furniture: Locks, hinges, padlocks, strap hinges,… Historiography has neglected this subject for a long time, leaving it to metalwork collectors and locksmithing enthusiast. The relatively recent development of "preventive" archaeological operations has allowed studying a large amount of unpublished data. This study has defined some new research tools, including the writing of a glossary revealing a French vocabulary of under-estimated richness. In order to trace the technical development of these objects, emphasis was placed on archaeological and iconographic sources. This redefining of the subject is done with the aid of graphic reconstruction showing how these mechanisms worked, as well a new typological classification which puts the history of forms aside in order to focus on the technical aspects. These objects are a pretext to the understanding and examination of the medieval society that designed, manufactured, used, improved, replaced, discarded and depicted them. It also appears that some of these utilitarian objects had a strong symbolic function.

La société médiévale a usé de divers systèmes d’ouverture et de fermeture dans son ameublement et son architecture : serrures, charnières, cadenas, pentures,… L’historiographie nous montre un sujet longtemps délaissé aux collectionneurs et amateurs de serrurerie et ferronnerie. Cette étude s’est employée à définir de nouveaux outils de recherche, entre autres avec la rédaction d’un glossaire faisant le point sur un vocabulaire d’une richesse sous-estimée. Le développement relativement récent de l’archéologie préventive a permis d’exhumer une quantité importante de données inédites. Ces nouvelles sources archéologiques – mais également iconographiques – ont été privilégiées afin d’essayer de retracer l’évolution technique de ces objets. Cette réappropriation du sujet passe, notamment, par des restitutions graphiques du fonctionnement des mécanismes et par un nouveau classement typologique qui délaisse l’histoire des formes pour se focaliser sur les aspects techniques. Ces objets ne sont qu’un prétexte pour aborder et comprendre la société médiévale qui les a pensés, fabriqués, utilisés, améliorés, remplacés, jetés et représentés. Il est également apparu que certains de ces objets – comme la clé – ont eu un rôle symbolique particulièrement fort.

La sociedad medieval ha utilizado diversos sistemas de apertura y cierre en el mobiliario y la arquitectura. Se trata de un tema hasta ahora muy poco tratado por la historiografía. Este estudio pretende establecer nuevos instrumentos para la investigación, como por ejemplo, mediante la elaboración de un glosario que utiliza un vocabulario de una riqueza que hasta el presente había sido subestimada. El desarrollo relativamente reciente de la arqueología preventiva ha permitido descubrir una gran cantidad de datos inéditos. Estas nuevas fuentes arqueológicas -y también iconográfias- han sido privilegiadas con el fin de tratar de rastrear la evolución técnica de estos objetos. Esta reapropiación del sujeto pasa, especialmente, por las restituciones gráficas del funcionamiento de los mecanismos y por una nueva clasificación tipológica que abandona la historia de las formas para centrarse más en los aspectos técnicos.

Strap-ends with central monogram are extremely rare amongst the finds from early medieval contexts
in the Mediterranean. They can be divided according to their geographic origin into Western, Southern
and Eastern Mediterranean strap-ends. Although comparatively numerous strap-ends from Italy are
found in grave contexts, most originate from uncertain find circumstances. This is particularly true for
the Eastern Mediterranean. The context of these belt sets has shown that they were worn by members
of a higher ranking military class. Whereas in the Western Mediterranean the strap ends are mainly
made from silver, in the Eastern Mediterranean they are primarily made from gold or gold-plated
bronze. There are three known stamping press models used for the production of the strap-ends. The
oldest strap ends date to the late 6th century in the Western Mediterranean and were in circulation until
the end of the 7th century. Although most monograms bear the names of the owner, some can be deciphered
as incantations. It is particularly striking that especially the western, mainly Latin monograms
also carry Latin names, even though their bearer – contrary to the roman unarmed burial custom –
carried arms.

In Solnhofen, located in the valley of the river Altmühl, an aristocratic settlement with stone architecture and a private church (Phase I / II) was established during the second half of the 7th century. The predominant economic basis was an intensified iron production. In this place the monk Sola founded a small monastic settlement (cella) around the year 750, which was donated to Fulda abbey in 794. At this time the cella was directly connected to one of the most important traffic and trade routes in the eastern parts of the Carolingian empire. The small priory served as a hospitium for travellers and merchants. After 800 the road system changed fundamentally when the main interests of Carolingian politics shifted to the so called »Nordgau«. To maintain the priory’s position as a religious and economic centre in the Altmühl region, prior Gundhram elevated the body of Sola in 839 and subsequently established his veneration as a saint. Furthermore handicraft became more and more important as a new source of income. Around 1000, a new church was erected (Phase VI). It served as a symbol of Fulda’s territorial claims, especially in opposition to the ex panding diocese of Eichstätt.

La reapertura y nueva adaptación museográfica del Museo Histórico - Etnográfico de Villafranca de los Barros (Badajoz, España) ha dado a conocer algunas piezas de sumo interés para la toréutica de la Antigüedad Tardía en la Lusitania, que se suman a otras piezas conocidas en la bibliografía tradicional procedentes de la comarca. El conjunto de piezas inéditas que aquí se presenta (tres anillos, dos hebillas de cinturón y tres placas de broches de cinturón) entraron a formar parte de la colección del Museo a través de la donación de particulares y, por tanto, sin contexto arqueológico cierto. Sin embargo, su tipología y la singularidad de la iconografía de algunas de ellas, hacen que merezcan un estudio detallado.

An archaeological evaluation on land between Foxton and West Langton, near Market Harborough, Leicestershire, located up to seven Anglo-Saxon inhumation graves, representing part of a larger cemetery of late fifth and sixth century date. Whilst little human bone survived, there was also evidence for cremation burial in the cemetery.
The grave goods, which include beads, brooches and other pieces of metalwork, suggest that three of the graves contained female burials, and one contained a dual female and male burial, the male being buried with a shield. Other finds include a very ornate equal arm brooch, several cruciform brooches, small-long brooches and other personal equipment as well as a shield boss. A further inhumation grave, within the area of a Roman villa complex about 500m to the north, contained a Roman coin, although the previous finding of Anglo-Saxon pottery and metalwork at this location could indicate a second Anglo-Saxon burial ground. This grave is, therefore, of uncertain date.

Was geschah eigentlich in Augusta Raurica nach dem Ende der Römerzeit? Anhand von archäologischen Beispielen aus dem spätantik-frühmittelalterlichen Kaiseraugst begegnet Anna Flückiger mit verschiedenen Ansätzen dem Problem, dass archäologische Überreste von Siedlungen aus dem späten 4. bis frühen 6. Jahrhundert häufig schwer erkennbar sind. Die Resultate zeichnen ein lebhaftes Bild der Siedlungstätigkeit im Umfeld der spätrömischen Befestigung – des Castrum Rauracense – und zeigen damit einmal mehr, wie irreführend der Begriff der «dunklen Jahrhunderte» ist.

This contribution discusses finds that came to light at widely varying times in more or less the same area near Bronneger. In 1935 the land surveyor Wouter van Aggelen acquired two handmade pots, at least one of which was used as an urn, the remains of three secondarily burnt terra sigillata plates (central/eastern Gaul), two melon beads – one of which appears to have been in contact with fire too – and a few (now disappeared) fragments of bronze, iron and glass. These finds must
have come from one or more Roman-period cremation burials. Which of the finds belong together can no longer be determined. The burial(s) date(s) from the second half of the 2nd century or the 3rd century. We do not know the extent of the sand-digging operations that led to the discovery of these grave goods, but we may assume that several burials were destroyed by the work.
In a search with a metal detector in 2008, the third author found a few small objects and fragments that make it clear that there is also an early medieval cemetery at this site. The finds were discovered within a small area of little more than 25 x 25 m. They are all made of bronze. Some iron objects that were also detected here are thought to be (sub)recent remains. A few more objects were found at this site during fieldwalking after 2008, but nothing new has come to light in the past few years.
The remains that were found with the metal detector can be divided into three groups: buckles, brooches and ‘other objects’. The brooches are of four different types: bow, ring, saucer and button brooches. All in all, they are (parts of) at least ten brooches. The Junkersdorf and Hahnheim types are represented among the bow brooches. A beautiful button brooch is adorned with a highly stylized face, and two of the saucer brooches closely resemble Anglo-Saxon specimens known from Great Britain. No remains of gold plating were found on any of the saucer brooches. The metal objects that were brought up to the surface by ploughing - mostly clothing accessories – show no signs of burning, implying that they derive from inhumation burials. Most of the finds date from the 5th and 6th centuries. One object appears to be of a younger date (8th century).
The finds discussed in this article indicate that there was a cemetery at this site that was used from at least the 2nd/3rd century until some time in the 6th century, or possibly even into the 8th century AD. The cemetery contained cremation burials dating from the Roman period and
inhumation burials from the Early Middle Ages. The necropolis lay at a prominent point in the landscape, on a small plateau on the eastern  flank of the Hondsrug (a glacial ridge), from where it afforded a view across the valley of the Hunze and the peatland behind it. In the Roman period there was a large settlement about 500 m further south. How large it was and whether it was still occupied in the Early Middle Ages we don’t know. It is tempting to see the settlement features
and a cemetery containing burials arranged side by side in an open field known as Zuides in Drouwen - around 2 km further southwest - as the successors of the Bronneger cemetery and the associated settlement; that ‘shift’ could then have taken place in the 7th century. However, there are too many gaps in our archaeological understanding to allow us to draw any certain conclusions about this. What we do know for certain is that the occupants of the new settlement created their cemetery in and around an impressive Bronze Age barrow, thus boldly expressing a connection to their ancestors.

Ce mémo décrit la technique consistant à restituer une partie symétrique sur l’image photographique d’un objet brisé.
NB : cette technique ne doit évidemment être utilisée que dans le cas où la forme et les mensurations de la partie restituée ne font aucun doute. La restitution ne vise qu’à suggérer l’aspect global de l’objet complet, par exemple pour faciliter les comparaisons.

Pourtant classées dans la Chronologie normalisée du mobilier funéraire mérovingien entre Manche et Lorraine avec le code 160, les appliques de ceinture mérovingiennes sont mal connues. De formes variées, ces éléments appartenant aux garnitures de ceinture accompagnent les plaques-boucles en alliage cuivreux dont la plaque est de forme triangulaire ou circulaire et la boucle de forme ovalaire. En dehors des appliques rectangulaires qui composent en grande partie ce type, on note également la présence d’appliques réniformes et en lunule dont les extrémités en volutes rappellent des têtes de rapace affrontées. Ce type peut être daté entre la fin du VIe et le début du VIIe siècle (phase MA3 – Mérovingien Ancien 3). Exclusivement en alliage cuivreux, même si des exemples approchant en fer avec décor damasquiné sont connus, ces appliques restent rares dans le mobilier funéraire mérovingien. Deux
exemplaires différents ont été découverts dans la nécropole de Vicq (Yvelines) montrent ainsi une variante dans ce type d’applique : une applique réniforme à volutes et une applique en lunule assez ouverte. D’autres exemplaires provenant de France, de Belgique, d’Allemagne et des Pays-Bas permettent d’étoffer cette catégorie. Cet article a pour objectif de dresser un premier inventaire et examen typochronologique de ces garnitures dans le but d’être mieux appréhender.

Le site de Bagatelle/Abreuvoir Saint-Michel à Châteauvert dans le Var a livré de rares accessoires de la ceinture en alliage cuivreux de la première moitié du XIVe siècle. Ils comportent un décor ajouré et gravé et des inserts en verre peint, le tout inspiré de motifs architecturaux et du vitrail selon une pratique courante dans l'artisanat des XIIIe-XVIe siècles. Ces objets, d'une qualité supérieure à la moyenne, peuvent être rapprochés d'accessoires de la ceinture en alliage cuivreux fréquents dans le Sud-Est de la France et de pièces en métaux précieux connues en Europe de l'Ouest.

The contribution briefly deals with the results of recent excavations at late antique settlement and cemetery in Kranj. Apart from this important site, traces of Ostrogothic and Langobard's​ presence were found on some strategic important hilltop sites in Slovenia as is indicated by the numerous small finds.
