Erklaren Verstehen

Η παρούσα μελέτη επιδιώκει να εξετάσει την υφή και την συμβολή της εθνογραφίας και της σύλληψης του ‘εγκληματολογικού verstehen’ στην έρευνα πεδίου, όπως αναδείχθηκαν από την πολιτισμική εγκληματολογία για την μελέτη των υποπολιτισμών. Σε αυτό το πλαίσιο, η ‘εθνογραφική εμβύθιση’, η ‘συμπαθητική κατανόηση’, η ‘ενσυναίσθηση’ και η ‘υποκειμενική βίωση και ερμηνεία’ είναι έννοιες-κλειδιά που υφαίνουν την ‘εγκληματολογική κατανόηση’ (‘criminological verstehen).’

The quest to provide a fundamental understanding and explanation of reality is an ambitious one. Perhaps it is too ambitious. The possible restrictions for such an enterprise to be successful must be inquired in order to determine the issue. Section 1 explores one’s understanding in reaching (scientific) conclusions: to what extent does a successful account testify to understanding? Section 2 focuses on the other side of such an account: does it provide an explanation in a more fundamental sense than pointing out causes of phenomena, or is it restricted to such a task? A critical stance vis-à-vis the (scientific) enterprise of unearthing reality’s structure remains necessary in order not to confuse a consistent and productive theory with one that demonstrates an understanding and explanation in the sense of this article.

Die von Dilthey formulierte Erkenntnisproblematik führte zu der Notwendigkeit, der kantischen Begründung der Naturwissenschaften eine rationale erkenntniskritische Begrün-dung der Geistes- und Sozialwissenschaften zur Seite zu stellen. In dieser Diskussion ist Plessners Beitrag zur Erklären-Verstehen-Kontroverse zu verorten. Er führt dabei einerseits die Argumentation Diltheys weiter5, modifiziert sie aber durch zwei wichtige Erweiterun-gen. Er integriert nämlich einerseits Denkfiguren der neukantianischen Marburger Schule um Cohen und zentrale Elemente der von Husserl begründeten Phänomenologie.
Das sich aus dieser Gesamtkonzeption ergebende Verständnis von Erklären und Verste-hen weist eine besondere Pointe auf. Die Begründung der Methoden geisteswissenschaftli-chen Verstehens mache es nämlich erforderlich, eine Theorie der menschlichen Person zu entwickeln, denn diese wird als Trägerin der geschichtlichen Prozesse verstanden. Es ist die Person, deren Ausdruck den Gegenstand des sozial- und geisteswissenschaftlichen Verste-hens bildet. Als menschliche ist die Person nun nicht nur ein immaterielles Geistwesen, sondern ebensosehr ein materiell physisches Wesen. Dieser Sachverhalt müsse Plessner zufolge als grundlegend für die sozial- und geisteswissenschaftliche Forschung berücksich-tigt werden. Es geht für Plessner also nicht nur darum, das Verste-hen gesellschaftlich-historischer Prozesse als wissenschaftliches Verfahren zu begründen, sondern ebenso um einen rational begründeten verstehenden Zugang zur Natur. Dieses Naturverständnis muß notwendigerweise sein Verhältnis zum naturwissenschaftlichen Na-turverständnis reflektieren, da dieses den bis dahin einzig rational begründeten Zugang zur Natur darstellt. Diesem Anspruch versucht Plessner gerecht zu werden, indem er den ver-stehenden Zugang zur Natur als Reflexion der naturwissenschaftlichen Forschung begreift. Es handelt sich bei Plessners Theorie des Lebendigen also einerseits um einen methodisch eigenständigen verstehenden Zugang zur Natur, der andererseits zugleich eine Reflexion des naturwissenschaftlichen Naturverständnisses darstellt.

Karl Jaspers' phenomenology remains important today, not solely because of its continuing influence in some areas of psychiatry, but because, if fully understood, it can provide a method and set of concepts for making new progress in the science of psychopathology. In order to understand this method and set of concepts, it helps to recognize the significant influence that Edmund Husserl's early work, Logical investigations, exercised on Jaspers' formulation of them. We trace the Husserlian influence while clarifying the main components of Jaspers' method. Jaspers adopted Husserl's notions of intuition, description, and presuppositionlessness, transforming them when necessary in order to serve the investigations of the psychopathologist. Jaspers also took over from Wilhelm Dilthey and others the tools of understanding (Verstehen) and self-transposal. The Diltheyian procedures were integrated into the Husserlian ones to produce a method that enables psychiatrists to define the basic kinds of psychopathological mental states.

Altruismus heißt so viel wie Uneigennützigkeit und Selbstlosigkeit. Namensgeber, Auguste Comte, benannte im Jahr 1851 Altruismus als das Denken und Handeln „(…) das anderen nützt und nicht in Erwartung einer Belohnung erfolgt“ (Macaulay/Berkowitz 1970: 3). Er stellte das „vivre pour autrui“ dem Egoismus gegenüber und sah es in einer immer individualistischer werdenden Gesellschaft als „höchste aller Tugenden“ (Hunt 1990: 25) an. Ideengeschichtlich erfolgte eine Auseinandersetzung mit dem Thema lange vor Comte. Bereits Adam Smith, Immanuel Kant und zahlreiche weitere Philosophen beobachteten die Existenz eines „unerklärlichen selbstlosen Verhaltens“ (ebd.: 25). Bis heute beschäftigt das Rätsel der Nächstenliebe, wie Morton Hunt es nannte, Natur- und Geisteswissenschaftler gleichermaßen.

Ist die Poppersche Begründung der verstehenden Soziologie möglich? Eine Kritik am sogenannten ›covering law model‹ für die wissenschaftli-che Erklärung Im vorliegenden Text wird in kritischer Weise auf die Wissenschaftstheo-rie Karl Poppers eingegangen, insbesondere mit seinem Konzept einer evolutionären Erkenntnistheorie, wie er sie in Objektive Erkenntnis darlegt (Popper 1998; siehe auch Vollmer 1999). Mit diesem kleinen Versuch wird darauf abgezielt, die Grundlage und das philosophische (Selbst-)Ver-ständnis der Soziologie nachzuprüfen. Im ersten Abschnitt werden wir Poppers Drei-Welten-Theorie behan-deln, und zwar in Hinsicht auf ihren Inhalt, ihre Absicht, ihre Voraus-setzungen, und ihre Schwächen, die sich aus dem vorangegangenen er-geben. Denn mit dieser Theorie beabsichtigt Popper, den Sozial-wissenschaften, bes. der Soziologie eine wissenschaftstheoretische Grund-lage zu liefern, wie wir später sehen werden. Heutzutage noch teilen nicht wenige Autoren die Meinung, daß sie in der Tat eine soziologische Tradition namens der Wirklichkeitswissenschaft fundieren kann (vgl. Haller 1999; vgl. auch Meleghy 1993). Der vorliegende Text steht dieser These kritisch gegenüber und wendet ein, daß Popper aufgrund von seiner fal-schen Voraussetzungen seine Theorie nicht konsequent genug entfaltet und daß darin Unklarheiten verbleiben. Im zweiten Abschnitt werden wir uns der Erklärungstheorie Poppers, d. h. dem nomologischen Erklärungsmodell zu. Dabei wird sich – leider – zeigen, daß dieses Modell weder die historische Erklärung abdecken kann noch mit der Drei-Welten-Theorie kompatibel ist. Derek Bolton seeks to "deconstruct" a number of traditional dichotomies. Among these are the dichotomies delineated by Karl Jaspers and other early writers in the Geisteswissenschaften between meaningful and causal connections, and the correlative methodological dichotomy between hermeneutic interpretation and causal explanation. Bolton attempts to surmount these traditional dichotomies by attributing a causal role to meaning: meaning, as encoded in the brain, causes various behaviors; in particular it causes intentional or goal-directed behaviors. Bolton contends that, when fully explicated, the notion of a neuro-causal role for meaning gives rise to a new research program that he calls "cognitive-behavioral semantics." This research program can provide the theoretical basis for the science of psychopathology as well as for other psychological and social sciences. Bolton's cognitive-behavioral semantics may prove to be a fruitful research program. Like all research programs, the proof will lie in its capacity to guide scientific investigations that do in fact make new discoveries. We wonder, however, why Bolton thinks it necessary to view his program as somehow "deflating" previous distinctions among conceptual and methodological approaches. We can discern no reason to believe that the causal properties of meaning, if there are such, are the only properties of meaning: meaning may have other properties as well, properties that can be characterized only by taking conceptual approaches quite different from Bolton's. Or, expressed slightly differently, there is no reason to assume that the neurological role of meaning in causing human behavior is the sole role of meaning in human life. Consequently, Bolton's cognitive-behavioral semantics can provide only one approach to the reality of meaning, one approach among others. We see no reason to follow Bolton in his attempt to "deconstruct" other, non-causal approaches to meaning. Indeed, we think this would be a serious mistake: it would blind us to properties of meaning that could be illuminated only from those other perspectives. By reasoning in this way we are, of course, simply endorsing Jaspers' multiperspectivalism (Jaspers 1963a, 555-62; 1965, 464-70; 1956, 149-239; McHugh et al., 1986; Schwartz et al., 1988).
