Esquines

The present work continues the study of the first volume of Socratic Philosophers through the translation and analysis of texts from four lines dating back to Socrates. The first corresponds to the philosophy of Antisthenes, a colossal figure in the conformation of Greek thought, not only because of the importance of his theories in the dialogue of s. IV a.C., but by its imprint in Hellenistic time. In fact, it has been debated whether Antisthenes was strictly the initiator of the cynical group, but regardless of the answer proposed in this point, the truth is that the Stoics claimed to be heirs of the cynics and through him of Antisthenes. His interest in the relationship between language and reality and his adoption of a materialist ontology are impossible to ignore in the moment of understanding stoicism's position in this field.
The second line to be studied, the Eliac, begins with Phaedo de Elis, famous for the role that Plato assigns him in the homonymous dialogue as a reporter for the last moments of Socrates. The relevance of this election makes it necessary to pay attention to its theoretical proposal, embodied in the foundation of a school with projections in the s. III a.C. through his continuators.
Without a school inheritance but with broad recognition of his contemporaries and followers, Aeschines de Sphettus followed the format of the Socratic dialogue in successful works that offered an alternative approach to that of his fellows. From these works, we preserve fragments that shed light on the common points of this type of work and about the kind of preoccupations that encouraged the particular vision of Aeschines about the intellectual task. In addition to the developments of the Megaric and Cyrenaic, a general view of the Socratics was drawn up, which did not confine itself to integrating the followers of a teacher, but adopted an active theoretical task by moving forward with concrete proposals.

El presente trabajo continúa el estudio sobre megáricos y cirenaicos del primer volumen de Filósofos socráticos a través de la traducción y análisis de los textos de cuatro líneas que se remontan a Sócrates. La primera corresponde a la filosofía de Antístenes, figura de colosal impacto en la conformación del pensamiento griego, no sólo por la importancia de sus teorías en el diálogo del s. IV a.C., sino por su impronta en la época helenística. En efecto, se ha debatido si Antístenes fue estrictamente el iniciador del grupo cínico, pero independientemente de la respuesta que se proponga en este punto, lo cierto es que los estoicos se pretendieron herederos de los cínicos y por su intermedio de Antístenes, antecesor ilustre que los convertía a su vez en una legítima línea socrática. Su interés por la relación entre lenguaje y realidad y su adopción de una ontología materialista son imposibles de soslayar en el momento de comprender la toma de posición del estoicismo en este terreno.
La segunda línea que habremos de estudiar, la Elíaca, se inicia con Fedón de Élide, personaje famoso por el papel que Platón le asigna en el diálogo homónimo como relator de los últimos momentos de Sócrates. La relevancia de esta elección hace preciso prestar atención a su propuesta teórica, plasmada en la fundación de una escuela con proyecciones en el s. III a.C. a través de continuadores en diálogo cercano con otras líneas y su continuación en la vertiente erétrica de este grupo, a partir de Menedemo y Asclepíades.
Sin herencia escolar pero sí con amplio reconocimiento de sus contemporáneos y continuadores, Esquines de Esfeto se atuvo al formato del diálogo socrático en obras exitosas que ofrecían un enfoque alternativo al de sus compañeros de ruta. De estas obras conservamos fragmentos que echan luz sobre los puntos comunes de este tipo de trabajos y sobre el tipo de preocupaciones que alentaron la particular visión de Esquines acerca de la tarea intelectual. Aunadas a los desarrollos de los megáricos y cirenaicos se plasma una perspectiva general de los socráticos que no se limitaron a integrar el séquito de seguidores de un maestro, sino que adoptaron una tarea teórica activa avanzando en propuestas concretas.
