Sida cordifolia L. (Malvaceae) is used in folk medicine for the treatment of inflammation of the oral mucosa, blenorrhea, asthmatic bronchitis and nasal congestion. The anti-inflammatory, analgesic effects and acute toxicity of an aqueous extract of S. cordifolia were evaluated in animal models. The extract was prepared using leaves collected before the flowering period. The aqueous extract (AE) showed a significant inhibition of carrageenin-induced rat paw edema at a dose of 400 mg/kg administered orally, but did not block the edema induced by arachidonic acid. The AE also increased the latency period for mice in the hot plate test, and inhibited the number of writhes produced by acetic acid at the oral dose of 400 mg/kg. The aqueous extract of S. cordifolia showed low acute toxicity in mice.

Antioxidant capacity and antimicrobial activities ofLepista nuda (Bull.) Cooke extracts obtained with ethanol were investigated. Four complementary test systems, namely DPPH free radical scavenging, β-carotene/linoleic acid systems, total phenolic compounds and total flavonoid concentration, have been used. Linoleic, acid inhibition values ofL. nuda ethanolic extract, BHA and α-to copherol standards were found to be 84.3% 98.9% and 99.2% respectively in the concentration of 160μg/ml. Total flavonoid amount was 8.21 ± 0.56 μg mg−1 quercetin equivalent while the phenolic compound amount was 48.01 ± 0.29 μg mg−1 pyrocatechol equivalent in the extract. The antimicrobial activity ofL. nuda extract was testedin vitro by using the agar-well diffusion method. TheL. nuda extract showed antibacterial activity againstMicrococcus flavus, Micrococcus luteus, Bacillus cereus, Yersinia enterocolitica, Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella enteritidis andEscherichia coli. TheL. nuda extract did not exhibit antican didal activity againstCandida albicans. The extracts could be suitable as antimicrobial and antioxidativeagents in the food industry.

Agarwood, one of the valuable non-timber products in tropical forest, is a fragrant wood, whose ethereal fragrance has been prized in Asia for incense in ceremony, as well as sedatives in traditional medicine. We separated the 70% EtOH extract of Vietnamese agarwood, which showed significant induction effect on brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) mRNA expression in rat cultured neuronal cells, to isolate a new compound and a 2-(2-phenylethyl)chromone derivative. The new compound was determined to be a spirovetivane-type sesquiterpene, (4R,5R,7R)-1(10)-spirovetiven-11-ol-2-one, by spectroscopic data and showed induction effect of BDNF mRNA.The new sesquiterpenoid, (4R,5R,7R)-1(10)-spirovetiven-11-ol-2-one, isolated from agarwood significantly induced brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) exon III–V mRNA expression.

Medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) is a calcitonin-producing tumor of the thyroid arising from the parafollicular C-cells. MTC is poorly responsive to chemotherapy and radiotherapy, hence the only effective therapy is surgery. Based on this fact, alternative strategies have been sought. The effects of Cautleya gracilis (Smith) Dandy were investigated for the first time in three human MTC cell lines and in MTC-transplanted mice. Proliferation and viability were quantified by cell counting, WST-1 tests, and ATP luminescent cell viability assays. Apoptosis was studied by DAPI staining, flow cytometry and luminescent assays for caspases 3/7, 8 and 9. A dose-dependent reduction of proliferation and an induction of apoptosis were found in all MTC cell lines, while normal fibroblasts were not impaired. Similar tumor inhibition was seen in heterotransplanted mice. Our in vitro and in vivo findings suggest a new potential clinical effect of Cautleya.
