Beneath the layers of what constitutes entertainment lies a worldview about gender that informs our understanding of everyday realities. Rape and sexual abuse have been part of movies, videos and songs for a long time. As Cucklanz (1998, 425) argues, “the importance of this relationship between media representations of rape and social attitudes about it cannot be underestimated.” It is in growing up with such depictions that shape our understanding of the cause and effect of rape, or what has been termed as the production of a rape culture, in which the media play no small part. Sexual violence and rape have long been common plots for movies and even music videos, but we are increasingly witnessing problematic images of the sexual abuse of women. Moreover, we have also seen a shift toward sometimes portraying women in an agential role, using their sexuality to trap and falsely accuse men of sexual harassment. In doing so, popular culture reinforces stereotypes about women and their sexuality, trivializing the question of rape. Such ideas go a long way in shaping common perceptions of rape and sexual abuse, which need to be challenged and re-examined. The connection between rape and revenge, as both narrative device and social phenomenon, is well known. Katrina Lee-Koo argues that, “the subjugation, humiliation and degradation are not just an assault upon the woman and her body, but are also an assault upon her state/culture/religion/ethnic group and men who belong to it” (2002, 528). The act of rape is thus, in the eyes of rapists and their apologists, the subjugation of both the victim as well as what they represented: communities of caste; religions; nations; sexualities; and forms of femininity and masculinity. It is therefore not surprising to note that the rape-revenge theme is one that has been represented in popular culture. Such depictions are rarely critical in nature, adopting instead what the feminist film scholar Laura Mulvey calls the male gaze, where the narrative is driven primarily by the male protagonist and a perceived male audience, while women serve a purely “exhibitionist role” onto which men project their fantasies (1975, 9). As irmas formam um tipo especial de duplo, configurado por meio de suas identidades gendradas, atos de resistencia transgressivos e de suas conexoes complexas com figuras maternas. A analise dos pares de irmas se baseia em um suporte teorico de psicanalise feminista e dos estudos de genero, com enfase nas politicas de corpo e no matricidio ontologico. This article explores the role of women and young girls in Old Calendarist communities in Romania and presents new sources relating to neglected history of the practice of incarceration in Orthodox monasteries in the region. The community developed into a spiritual mass movement that soon became the target of the secret police. Women played an important role within these communities in terms of membership but also in relation to the preservation of Old Calendarist ideas. Explored through the prism of the former secret police archival documents, these women were deemed dangerous and were accused of luring people into the Old Calendarist groups. In contrast to the extremely negative representation of these women that we find in contemporary Orthodox Church publications, police reports and popular press articles, the letters and postcards that they wrote from detention offer us an insight into the private life, personality and motivation of these women.

One of the most outstanding literary and cultural phenomena that the Victorian period introduced was the emergence and rise of the popular juvenile magazine. Concurrent with the rise of the New Woman as an emergent notion of femininity in the 1880s, some periodical publications targeting a female audience such as the Girl’s Own Paper also emerged and gained immense popularity. The power and exceptional popularity of the Girl’s Own Paper lied in the way it provided a space for the articulation of subjects and structures of feeling that were relevant for the juvenile female reading audience. Using the theoretical terms and approaches introduced by Raymond Williams, John Fiske, and Henry Jenkins, the article engages Elizabeth Whittaker’s “Robina Crusoe and Her Lonely Island Home” that was serialized in the Girl’s Own Paper in 1882-83 to explicate how this girl’s Robinsonade accommodated conventional feminity and the New Woman in the person of its protagonist, thereby communicating with...

U radu se interpretira mladenacki dnevnik Ivane Mažuranic pisan od 1888. do 1891., u razdoblju od njezinih cetrnaest do sedamnaest godina života. Dnevnik se iscitava na nekoliko razina, od kojih je prva dokumentarno-povijesna na kojoj se detektiraju obilježja građanske ženske adolescencije krajem 19. stoljeca u Zagrebu, odnosno javni lik adolescentice toga doba. Iz dnevnickih se zapisa također iscitava i privatni lik adolescentice i neki aspekti internalizacije javnoga diskursa o adolescentici produktivnih u tom razdoblju.

Vaginal cysts have rarely proved to be more troublesome than causing a bit of discomfort and slight pain, but in some cases, they can develop into tumors. A 5-year-old girl, who was complaining about a weird pain in her lower abdomen, was referred to the gynecology center of the hospital. Ultrasonography revealed a vague large cyst in her uterus and vagina. Surgical procedure was necessary to remove it. The patient was followed up for 6 months, and no sign of recurrence of the cyst was observed.

Genderkompetenz und -sensibilität sind bei politischen und zivilgesellschaftlichen Akteur_innen in ländlichen Regionen oft nur marginal vorhanden. Jüngste Wahlergebnisse in Europa und den USA bestärken die Hypothese, dass ein „rural-urban-divide“ bei konservativen und liberalen Lebenskonzepten und -orientierungen besteht. Wie gestalten sich unter solchen Bedingungen die Lebensverhältnisse der dort lebenden Menschen? In diesem Beitrag werden zum einen die Vielfalt ländlicher Regionen und zum anderen ihre unterschiedlichen Dynamiken im Hinblick auf Geschlechterordnungen und Benachteiligungen von Frauen und Mädchen beleuchtet. Der direkte Blick in die Regionen, auf die ländliche Wirtschaft und die verschiedenen Facetten von Arbeit lässt deutlich werden, mit wie vielen Herausforderungen Frauen konfrontiert sind, wenn sie ein existenzsicherndes und selbstbestimmtes Leben auf dem Land realisieren wollen. Und wie gefährdet Errungenschaften sind, die Geschlechtergerechtigkeit garantieren.

Aśu was a twelfth-century woman from the West Coast of South India. She is mentioned as a Tuḷuva “slave girl” (šifḥa) in a deed of manumission authored by Abraham Ben Yijū, a Jewish merchant who lived with her for nearly eighteen years and had children with her. It is thus accepted that Aśu was a manumitted slave. However, there is evidence to the contrary suggesting that Aśu was a member of a matrilineal household of the Nāyar caste of landlords, and that by allying with her, Ben Yijū was establishing a transregional network in collaboration with hinterland Indian merchants. In what follows, I examine the textual evidence from the Cairo Geniza related to the couple and reevaluate it against the anthropological history of Nāyars, especially in relation to their matrilineal inheritance customs and intercaste matrimonial alliances. Background: Babesiosis is a rare emerging opportunistic disease in humans. It is a zoonotic disease caused by protozoan parasites of the genus Babesia and transmitted by Ixodid tick vector. It is often incidentally diagnosed because of its rarity but may be severe or fatal in presentation, particularly in immunocompromised hosts. Aim: To reportthe clinical presentationof a fatal case of human babesiosis in a nine-year old girlwith retroviral disease, in Sokoto, Northern Nigeria. This thesis critically interrogates how masculinist practices of breakdancing offers a site for the transgression of gendered norms. Drawing on my own experiences as a female within the male-dominated breakdancing scene in Sydney, first as a spectator, then as an active crewmember, this thesis questions why so few female participants engage in this creative space, and how breakdancing might be a space to displace and deterritorialize gender. I use analytic autoethnography and interviews with scene members in collaboration with theoretical frameworks offered by Deleuze and Guattari, Butler, Bourdieu, and other feminist and post-structuralist philosophers, to critically examine how the capacities of bodies are constituted and shaped in Sydney’s breakdancing scene, and to also locate the potentiality for moments of transgression. In other words, I conceptualize the breaking body as not a ‘body’ constituted through regulations and assumptions, but as an assemblage open to new rhizomatic connections. Breaking is a space that embraces difference, whereby the rituals of the dance not only augment its capacity to deterritorialize the body, but also facilitate new possibilities for performativities beyond the confines of dominant modes of thought and normative gender construction. Consequently, this thesis attempts to contribute to what I perceive as a significant gap in scholarship on hip-hop, breakdancing, and autoethnographic explorations of Deleuze-Guattarian theory.

The discussions undertaken by decolonial thought have led researchers to a critical review of media practices in the scope of image production and circulation. The different ways to represent subjects without considering the markers of gender, race, class, ethnicity, in intersectionality, are questioned as visual syntheses that reduces complex processes engendered by the underlying forms of capitalism. In this text, we propose a critical reflection on the ways in which journalistic image circumscribes a specific role for vulnerable people, taking as an exemplary base the photograph that won the World Press Photo international award in 2019.

In the wake of movements such as #MeToo, greater scrutiny has been brought to bear on the everyday nature of sexual violence. This has manifested in a global phenomenon of survivors speaking out publicly across a diverse range of platforms. This article explores one such Australian case that went on to become highly publicised against the backdrop of #MeToo. In May 2013, an 18-year-old woman named Saxon Mullins met 21-year-old Luke Lazarus on the dancefloor of a nightclub in the inner Sydney suburb of Kings Cross. Lazarus claimed he was the part-owner of the club and offered to take her to a VIP area. Instead, he led her to a dark alley and had sexual intercourse with her. Mullins has always described this as non-consensual. A ficção em hipertexto  Patchwork Girl, de Shelley Jackson, escrita e publicada no  softwareStoryspace, faz uma fábula da relação corpo-máquina utilizando conceitos da literatura juntamente com o embasamento teórico construído pelos estudos do hipertexto. Esta obra  literária aponta para o entrelaçamento de questões fundamentais na criação poética, ao inspirarse no conto Frankenstein, a Modern Prometeus,  de Mary Shelley, combinando o tema corpomáquina com as características escriturais  das poéticas tecnológicas, especialmente, do hipertexto. Este trabalho tem o objetivo de analisar esta obra de Shelley Jackson à luz de alguns estudos relativos à criação poética em hipertexto, ressaltando seu caráter literário dentro das novas poéticas tecnológicas.

At the publication of Vladimir Nabokov’s controversial novel Lolita (1958), the author insisted that a girl never appear on the cover. This discourse analysis of 185 Lolita book covers, most of which feature a girl, considers the genealogy of “Lolita” in relation to representation, myth, and tacit knowledge construction. How does the content and context of the narrative function to promote and propel erotic girl imagery and reiterate blameworthiness of the girl as seducer? Using visual discourse analysis (Rose, 2001) to analyze book cover representations, findings suggest cultural understandings of “Lolita” are connected to mythic signifiers and popular culture notions of girlhood gone bad. Also described and analyzed, a recent book cover contest that asks designers to create a Lolita book cover that does not use a girl. This study encourages art educators and their students to question how culture perpetuates myth, and more specifically, why.

We observed that despite international declarations on child-rights, outsourced domestic girl-child labour still persists. Raising the question whether outsourced domestic girl-child labour constitutes hermeneutical injustice, we respond affirmatively. Relying on two indigenous victimology-narratives that are newspaper reports, we expose some of the horrors that the victims of outsourced domestic girl-child labour suffer. Comparing these reports with other victimology-narratives of hermeneutical injustice as reported by Miranda Fricker and Hilkje Hänel, we argue that the victims of outsourced domestic girl-child labour suffer a hermeneutical gap and hermeneutical interference; and that the perpetuators of this practice, help to foster what we call ‘hermeneutical obstruction’. In white settler-colonial Australian imagination, ‘the child’ historically has both signalled the colony’s flourishing and is charged with anxiety about belonging and identity. This article analyses a set of events in which children were the occasion through which Australians managed racial violence and/or publicly distanced the mainstream from endemic racism. Differences between the mediating power of ‘white’ childhood versus Indigenous childhood are analysed, with a view to exploring how children are either problematized or positioned as figures of redemption, through processes of racialization.

This article examines female gender identity in Fiji. It focuses on the menarche ceremony in Fijian women's lives. The menarche ceremony is celebrated to acknowledge a little girl's transition into a young woman. During the ceremony perceptions of female gender identity are expressed explicitly, whereas in daily life a girl implicitly and gradually learns how to become a woman. The study explains how these perceptions are expressed, examines what these expressions are and looks at the impact the ceremony has on a girl's life.

The American white supremacist movement is home to an array of many different types of groups inhabited by an equally varied sample of people who are openly racist. Over the past nine years, my field work in four states in the southern region of the country exposed me to people who were affiliated with groups such as the Ku Klux Klan, Blood & Honour, and religious sects such as Christian Identity. This article examines the life history of Stacy, a young woman whose association with several deviant subcultures reveals the complexities of a life marked by poor choices, drug addiction, and virulent racism. A series of in-depth interviews conducted while she was living in Arkansas document personal details that include revelations about discovering her true identity as an adolescent, her troubled teenage years, her participation in the violent skinhead subculture in California, and ongoing personal struggles with methamphetamines and other drugs.

In this chapter, I explore some amoral care processes that take place outside human dyadic relationships in the ECEC centre. The study draws on Fisher and Tronto’s feminist care ethics and posthumanist perspectives. The objective is to explore how amoral care is performed between people and things in order to produce new knowledge about care as a professional practice in ECEC.
