Global Aerotropolis

The aerotropolis is a new urban form that relies on an airport and its integrated surface
transportation infrastructure to speedily connect high-value, time-sensitive firms to their
distant suppliers, customers, and enterprise partners. It consists of a multimodal airport-based
commercial core (Airport City) and outlying corridors and clusters of aviation-linked
businesses and associated mixed- use commercial/residential developments that feed off of
each other and their accessibility to the airport. 
The competitive advantages of the aerotropolis along with its key components, planning
principles, critiques, and counterpoints are discussed.
The research method adopted for the study is the case study methodology which allows for a
close examination of existing cases and gives room for how and why questions on the cases.
Using qualitative and quantitative techniques, five airport cities and broader aetropolis
(airport-centered urban economic regions) around the world that are either already
operational or in early stages of development were examined, four of which are international
while one was local. The international cases are; Hong Kong International Airport, Chicago
O’Hare International Airport, Stockholm Arlandan Airport, Kuala Lumpur International
Airport,. The local case is; Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA),. All cases are
carefully examined and observed for their merits and demerits with their contribution to the
urban development. Other methods used to get relevant information includes unstructured
interview for staffs of FAAN and NAA. 
The outcome of this study is that the Nigeria aerotropolis project is yet to be actualised
because of some ranging factors which have varying degree of influence on each location. It
was discovered that MMIA and other airports in Nigeria were not built in line with the
aerotropolis concept therefore resulting into difficulties to have an airport-based commercial
core. 
The study concludes that the success of aerotropolis is borne out of a range of factors and
criteria. Based on this, the study recommended that the design should create a modern airport
city with a vibrant city center and attractive workplaces, in a location that offers exceptional
access to the region, Nigeria and the world.

Kuzey Ormanları Savunması (KOS) 3. Havalimanı Projesi Çalışma Grubu İstanbul 3. Havalimanı Raporu, bu havalimanının yer seçiminde yapılan hatalar, konunun tarafı olan kurum ve kuruluşların hazırlamış olduğu raporlar ve ayrıca böyle bir yatırımın yapılabilmesi için gerekli olan Çevresel Etki Değerlendirmesi (ÇED) raporlarındaki bilgiler göz önüne alınarak hazırlanmış ve kamuoyunun ilgisine sunulmuştur.
Amaç projenin yer seçimiyle ilgili olarak meslek odaları, çevre örgütleri tarafından yapılan ciddi ikaz ve uyarılar ile bilimsel saptamaları gündelik dile dökerek anlaşılır kılabilmek, bir raporda vurgulanıp öbüründe atlanan başlıkları bir araya getirmek ve böylece bu kent-kıyım ve ekolojik yıkım projesi ile İstanbul’un nasıl bir yok oluşa sürükleneceğini ulusal ve uluslararası kamuoyu nezdinde bütüncül bir şekilde görünür kılmaktır.

The comprehensive report written  by Northern Forests Defense (2015) (NFD) analyzes the adverse impacts of Istanbul's 3rd Airport project on ecosystems, habitats, communities, national economy and Istanbul,  at the same time,revealing the non transparent, illegitimate and illegal dimensions of the project and other ecocide projects of its notorious developers.

Studying the Environmental Impact Assessment Reports of the project, which define the 3rd Airport as an ''Aerotropolis'', NFD  report claims that the project is not an airport project but an estates and construction project targeting the hitherto pristine lands of Northern Forests, lungs of Istanbul!.

A key index of the rapid growth of the global tourism industry is the emergence of the aerotropolis - or 'airport city', a form  of development that is designed to support aviation growth. Hailed as 'growth engines', airport-centric aerotropolis developments are environmentally unsustainable, and economically divisive, creating enclaves favouring transnational firms.

Aerotropolis development is a key planning trend and governments are allocating large areas of land, and enormous budgets, for these airport centric megaprojects. This update looks at aerotropolis development at 46 airports, in all regions of the world with a focus on Africa and Asia. The aerotropolis model of development raises important social, economic and environmental concerns.

Günümüzde ise havalimanlarının önem kazanmasıyla, Aerotropolis ya da havalimanı-kent modeli, birikim krizine çareyi, kentsel rant ve inşaat, emlak sektörleri üzerinden yükselen bir ekonomide arayan neoliberal sistemin adeta taze kanı olmuştur. Küresel ekonominin enerji sağlayıcıları olarak da adlandırılan aerotropolislerin bugün gezegenin değişik köşelerinden pıtrak misali yükselişine şahit olmaktayız ; 3.Havalimanı projesi de ÇED raporlarının da belirttiği üzere, bir ''Aerotropolis projesidir''.

Aerotropolis modelinde,havalimanı küresel bir cazibe merkezine dönüştürülmekte kent/ler ise havalimanının etrafında yer almaktadır. Klasik modelde, kentlerin havaliman/ları olurken, aerotropolis örneğinde, havalimanının kent/leri bulunmakta; böylece, planlama, altyapı ve ekonomi kurgulanırken, kent yerine havalimanı merkeze alınarak, merkez yeniden tanzim edilmektedir.

3.Havalimanı çevresini ve konuşlandığı Kuzey Ormanlarının emlak / inşaat projelerine açılmasını sağlayarak  azmanlaşacak Aerotropolis, sadece 7650 hektarlık havalimanı arazisini yok etmekle kalmayacak, çevresinde tetiklediği arazi rantı ve spekülasyonla Kuzey Ormanları’nın tümünü yutacaktır.

Aerotropolis developments - airport surrounded by commercial development designed to be aviation dependent and support growth of the airport - are proliferating worldwide. An aerotropolis is a disastrous model of development, enabling increased greenhouse gas emissions from aviation and excluding host communities from planning and governance.

The article investigates the processes and forms of airport-driven urban development. The author suggests conditions the airport and urban region it serves have to satisfy to generate urban development driven by airport activity.

Nowadays ASEAN has single aviation market policy. That policy lead airport infrastructure should be improved to fulfill the air transportation demand notably in Indonesia. Single aviation market will increase business activity frequency centered in airport which will increase competitiveness of business site near airport that have integrated access modes towards airport and downtown. It makes the Soekarno Hatta International Airport become airport city and the city near the airport (Tangerang City) become the aerotropolis. Nevertheless, the governments has not known its readiness to develop Tangerang City become aerotropolis. According that problem turn up a question “How the potential development of Soekarno Hatta International Airport area and Tangerang City to be developed into aerotropolis”. Goals of this research is assess the potential development of Soekarno Hatta International Airport area and Tangerang City to be developed into aerotropolis with analyze the existing condition, spatial planning and policy, and the governments readiness of Tangerang City. The research approach is quantitative. The analysis methods used is descriptive, spatial, and AHP. the an alysis has been done, it can be said tangerang city has the potential to be developed into aerotropolis.

Airports increasingly attract development—from shopping, hotels and leisure facilities, to cargo, logistics, business and industrial parks. The functional synergies result from facilitating the circulation of goods, money and people. However, airports can also be convenient locations for detention centers.
