This work analyzes the persistence of the model of the Spanish tenses proposed by Bello (1841), considering both the nuclear system and its extensions, specifically in the indicative mood. The model proposed by Bello is a landmark in the history of Spanish grammar because of its elegance and descriptive adequacy. Bello not only proposed a tense scheme of remarkable perfection, but also dealt with problems that will be systematically studied in the XX century with the development of theories of aspectuality, modality and pragmatic meaning.

El estudio de la Gramática del español resulta especialmente importante en los tiempos actuales, cuando la norma de uso parece enfrentarse al uso normativo. Hablar y escribir correctamente no está de moda y, sin embargo, la corrección lingüística es la condición previa e indispensable para lograr la belleza expresiva: la adecuada utilización de la sintaxis, huir de las incorrecciones, de extranjerismos, vulgarismos e incluso errores de pronunciación o de ortografía. Quien domina su propia lengua es capaz de expresar sus ideas adecuadamente y generalmente sus opiniones prevalecen sobre los demás.
Este libro ofrece una síntesis de la morfología y sintaxis del español, así como una interesante propuesta de análisis lingüístico destinada a estudiantes, profesores y público en general. También resulta muy útil como fundamento para el aprendizaje de la lengua latina y sus correspondientes análisis morfosintácticos. The non-concordant use of the Spanish dative clitic le with a plural indirect object (IO) appeared early in Spanish and continues to occur to the present day. Phonetic, morphosyntactic and pragmatic explanations have been proposed to account for this phenomenon. The present paper analyzes a corpus of 463 million words of written Chilean Spanish for the purpose of studying the invariable (non-concordant) le and the concordant les used with plural IOs. Both their order of appearance in sentences and the phenomenon’s distribution in different text types were analyzed. The results show that the frequency of the non-concordant le depends on both its position relative to the IO and certain properties of the discourse contexts in which it occurs. We conclude that of the three hypotheses, only the pragmatic one is compatible with the results of the study.
