The question whether Bohdan Khmelnytsky and the Zaporozhian Host ever became subjects of the Ottoman Empire has been debated for a long time. Those historians who study the diplomatic relations between the hetman and the Porte base their analyses on documentary sources, of which the originals of the Ottoman letters sent to Khmelnytsky are of particular importance. Yet, surprisingly enough, the only two presently known original letters from the Ottoman sultan Mehmed IV to the Ukrainian hetman have so far received little attention, with their dates sometimes cited incorrectly and the two documents even occasionally mistaken for each other. By studying the originals of the sultan’s letters preserved in Moscow (Russian State Archives of Ancient Documents, fond 89, op. 2, no. 26: 7–16 October 1650 N.S.) and in Warsaw (Central Archives of Historical Records, fond “Archiwum Koronne Warszawskie”, dział “Kozackie”, karton 42, no. 27: 22 February – 3 March 1651 N.S.), and comparing their texts with that of their preparatory drafts published by Jan Rypka, the authors have identified the Moscow letter with the draft dated 10 August 1650 N.S. It has been hitherto regarded as unsent. Evidence furnished by the archival materials pertaining to the diplomatic relations between the hetman, the Ottoman Empire, and Muscovy has made it possible to establish the role of these sultanic letters in negotiations for Ottoman protection by the Zaporozhian Host. It also enabled the authors to suggest possible reasons how one letter wound up in the archive of the Ambassadorial Office in Moscow while the other fell into the hands of the Poles at the battle of Berestechko and ended up in Warsaw.

Дискусія про те, чи Богдан Хмельницький і Військо Запорозьке прийняли османське підданство, точиться вже дуже довгий час. Вивчаючи дипломатичні
зв’язки гетьмана з Високою Портою, історики базували свої спостереження та висновки на документах, серед яких важливе місце займають оригінали османських грамот, адресованих Хмельницькому. Проте, хоч як дивно, обидві нині відомі оригінальні грамоти від султана Мегмеда IV до українського гетьмана донині залишалися більшою мірою недослідженими. Інколи їх неправильно датували, а часами навіть плутали між собою. Дослідивши оригінали султанських грамот, які зберігаються в Москві (РДАДА. – Ф. 89. – Оп. 2. – № 26, 7–16 жовтня 1650 р. н. ст.) і в Варшаві (AGAD. – Arch. Kor. Dz. kozacki. – K. 42. – № 27, 22 лютого – 3 березня 1651 р. н. ст.), і порівнявши їх з чорновими проектами, опублікованими Яном Рипкою, ми ототожнили текст московської грамоти з чернеткою, датованою 10 серпня 1650 р. н. ст., яка досі вважалася невисланою. Свідчення архівних документів про дипломатичні стосунки між гетьманом, Портою і Московською державою дали нам змогу встановити роль цих грамот у процесі перемовин про османське підданство, а також висловити припущення, яким чином одна з грамот опинилася в архіві московського Посольського приказу, тоді як друга, захоплена польськими військами під Берестечком,
потрапила до Варшави.
