Higher Order Thinking

The interaction between language and olfaction is both contradictory and complex. On the one hand, it is more difficult to assign words to olfactory experience than to any of our other sensory perceptions, and higher-order olfactory cognition can operate without any linguistic involvement. For example, one need not have any verbal knowledge of what a scent is for it to elicit a full blown episodic memory. At the same time, words and verbal context have a more potent influence on the perception of scents than they do for any other sensory system. Labels and verbal suggestions can alter perception of odors to the extent of creating olfactory illusions and once the name for an odor is known olfactory sensory representations can be over-ridden by verbal-cognitive processing. To examine the optical quality of healthy presbyopic eyes before and after implantation of the pseudoaccommodating AcrySof ReSTOR Natural intraocular lens (IOL) (Alcon Laboratories) by measuring visual acuity and wavefront aberrations.University of Valencia, Fernández-Vega Ophthalmological Institute, Valencia, Spain.Monocular refraction and photopic distance (6 m) and near (0.33 m) visual acuities were determined before and after clear lens extraction with bilateral AcrySof ReSTOR Natural IOL implantation in 30 hyperopic eyes (+0.50 to +4.00 diopters [D]) of presbyopic patients with low astigmatism (≤1.00 D). Postsurgical binocular visual acuity was measured over a range of effective distances. Wavefront aberrations were measured before and after surgery. Aberrations for 2 pupil diameters (3.0 mm and 5.0 mm) were decomposed using Zernike polynomials; total, defocus, astigmatism spherical, and coma aberration terms were studied separately. Postimplantation results were compared with preoperative values.Safety and efficacy indices for distance vision were 1.01 and 0.96, respectively. At near, they improved to 1.07 and 1.06, respectively. Vision at intermediate distances was noticeably poorer. Total, defocus, and spherical aberrations changed after IOL implantation with both pupil diameters (P<.01). Total and defocus aberrations were significantly reduced postoperatively. Spherical aberration coefficients changed to negative and less positive values for a 3.0 mm and a 5.0 mm pupil, respectively.Implantation of the pseudoaccommodating IOL in healthy eyes yielded uncorrected levels of high-contrast, distance, and near acuities comparable to preoperative best corrected values. Higher-order aberration levels appeared to be similar to the preoperative values.

Isolated Chinese hamster metaphase chromosomes were resuspended in 4 M ammonium acetate and spread on a surface of distilled water or 0.15 to 0.5 M ammonium acetate. The DNA was released in the form of a regular series of rosettes connected by interrossette DNA. The mean length of the rosette DNA was 14 μm, similar to the mean length of 10 μm for chromomere DNA of Drosophila polytene chromosomes. The mean interrosette DNA was 4.2 μm. SDS gel electrophoresis of the chromosomal nonhistone proteins showed them to be very similar to nuclear nonhistone proteins except for the presence of more actin and tubulin. Nuclear matrix proteins were present in the chromosomes and may play a role in forming the rosettes. Evidence that the rosette pattern is artifactual versus the possibility that it represents a real organizational substructure of the chromosomes is reviewed.

Classical continuum models, i.e. continuum models that do not incorporate an internal length scale, suffer from excessive mesh dependence when strain‐softening models are used in numerical analyses and cannot reproduce the size effect commonly observed in quasi‐brittle failure. In this contribution three different approaches will be scrutinized which may be used to remedy these two intimately related deficiencies of the classical theory, namely (i) the addition of higher‐order deformation gradients, (ii) the use of micropolar continuum models, and (iii) the addition of rate dependence. By means of a number of numerical simulations it will be investigated under which conditions these enriched continuum theories permit localization of deformation without losing ellipticity for static problems and hyperbolicity for dynamic problems. For the latter class of problems the crucial role of dispersion in wave propagation in strain‐softening media will also be highlighted.

Much psychological inquiry has focused on understanding the contribution that exposure to urban violence makes to violent behavior among youth. However, other ways in which these variables may be related have been largely overlooked. This study compared four alternative social–ecological models of the link between community violence exposure and violent behavior to determine the degree to which (1) community violence exposure contributes to violent behavior, (2) violent behavior contributes to community violence exposure, (3) both are consequences of common antecedents, and (4) both are manifestations of the same higher order construct. Two hundred and seventy-seven adolescent offenders were interviewed about family, neighborhood, cognitive, and peer characteristics, in addition to violent behavior and community violence exposure. Results suggest that a plausible way to understand the association between community violence exposure and youth violent behavior is to consider both as representations of a general involvement in violence.

Time-varying higher order spectra (TVHOS) based analysis is an emerging technique for analyzing signals which are non-stationary, non-Gaussian and nonlinear. Most TVHOS are derived from the Wigner-Ville distribution (WVD), and in particular, retain the lag centering property of the WVD.
