Historical Goldsmiths' Techniques

In der St.-Joseph-Kirche in Charbrow bei Leba ist ein einzigartiges Ensemble von zwölf Sargbeschlägen erhalten geblieben, die ursprünglich eine Sargausschmückung der Mitglieder der Familie von Somnitz bildeten. Der Bestattungsort der Familie war eine Krypta, die sich unter dem Altarraum der Kirche befand. Eben von den Särgen, die sich in dieser Grabstätte befanden, wurden die Sargbeschläge entfernt. Es hing mit der Tatsache zusammen, daß das Grabmal aufgeräumt und geschlossen wurde, da kein Platz für weitere Bestattungen vorhanden war, was sich zeitlich mit dem Anfang 19. Jahrhundert erlassenen Verbot zusammen el, die Toten in den Kirchen zu bestatten. Die Sargbeschläge wurden dann an Holztafeln im Inneren der Kirche angebracht.

In der deutschen Vorkriegsliteratur erscheinen die Sargbeschläge nur selten. In vielen Fällen wies ihre Ausführung ein niedriges Niveau auf und sie stammten meistens aus einer Zeit, die im Augenblick der Inventarisierung nicht weit zurück gelegen war. In der polnischen Literatur blieben derartige Objekte, obwohl sie wahrgenommen wurden, kaum im Interessensbereich der Forscher und erschienen somit  nur gelegentlich. Die einzige längere Erwähnung der Sargbeschläge von Charbrow kann man in der Inventarisation von Hugo Lemcke  finden.

Es ist nicht gelungen, den Herstellungsort der Sargbeschläge von Charbrow festzustellen. Da sie ein hohes künstlerisches Niveau aufweisen, kann man lediglich vermuten, daß sie in Danzig bestellt worden waren, das noch im 18. Jahrhundert ein dynamisches  Handwerkszentrum war. Es ist zu bezweifeln, daß die mit einer derartigen Fertigkeit ausgeführten Objekte des Metallhandwerks in einem anderen Zentrum, wie etwa das nahe gelegene Lauenburg oder das etwas mehr entfernte Stolp, entstehen sein konnten. Es scheint um so weniger möglich, daß die östlichen Gebiete Hinterpommerns in der ersten Hälfte des 18. Jahrhunderts unter dem Einfluß der Danziger Werkstätten standen, und daß es auf dem lokalen Markt an Handwerkern fehlte, die sich in der Metallbearbeitung spezialisiert hätten, vor allem in der Herstellung von Luxusgegenständen – und die Sargbeschläge zählen zweifelsohne dazu. Über ihre Hersteller in Danzig sind recht wenige Informationen erhalten geblieben. In den Danziger Archivalien aus den Jahren 1753-1782 wurden die Namen von Handwerkern gefunden, die sich mit ihrer Herstellung beschädigten. Sie gehörten der Zunft, die als „Riemer, Sattler und Gürtler Gewerk” bezeichnet wurde, an. Aufgrund einer Zusammenstellung aus dem Jahre 1763 wissen wir, daß sie außer den vergoldeten und versilberten Sargbeschlägen sowie der Sargausschmückung auch mindestens fünf Arten von Schmucknägeln, Möbelbeschläge, gegossene und versilberte Pferdegeschirrteile, Schnallen und versilberte Blaker herstellten.

The Crux Vaticana and ‘Byzantine’ Rome
The Crux Vaticana, the reliquary-cross of the passion of Our Lord, is as much a celebrated object as it is an enigmatic one. Its long-awaited restoration has finally allowed us to obtain a clear idea of its original state and subsequent alterations. Evidently a work of imperial patronage - from its ostentatious text which records the pious gift of the emperor Justin and his consort, as well as their images (significantly in the gesture of prayer) - we can consequently date the object (565-578) and define its place (Constantinople). It is a key work of reference among the silver objects produced in Byzantium in the 6th c., especially in the context of their often controversial attribution to Costantinople or Syria. Even if some of its iconographic choices (e.g. the duplication of the image of Christ, or the imperial garb) and stylistic comparisons with this work may still cause controversy, its genuine nature can no longer be denied.
The Cross was sent by the imperial couple to Rome, the city of the martyrs, whose most recent works of religious patronage had aligned it appropriately with the empire’s new capital. These monuments and the Crux Vaticana still testify powerfully today both to the links between Rome and Costantinople and to the faith of this pious emperor and of his wife.

New data and technical observations emerging from restoration operations

The Crux Vaticana, a prestigious testimony to the skills of the Byzantine goldsmiths kept in the Treasury Museum of Saint Peter’s Basilica, represents a rare example of imperial patronage still in existence. Thanks to the preliminary phase of studies and to the subsequent works of recent restoration, the lively debate over its original consistency and the authenticity of the cross is today met by convincing responses and new certainties about its modification and substitution. Furthermore, on the basis of prime documents and images and following valuations of the materials that constitute the cross and its decorative elements, it has been possible to reattach the lost crown of pearls around the reliquary and add once again single pearls on its front, in an act of partial restoration. Whilst respecting the balance between original appearance and historical manipulation, this act helps us to better perceive the harmonious composition of the significant sequence of gemstones which are placed in a precisely alternating chromatic sequence.

The inscription on the Crux Vatican qualifies the object as a donation to the city of Rome from the emperor Justin II and his wife Sophia, rightly mentioned as partner. The use of the Latin language, known in Constantinople well into the period of late antiquity, and the uncial style of writing “of type b”, adopted for the legendary Byzantine coin, prove the substantial authenticity of the cross, which, before becoming part of the Treasury of Saint Peters, was perhaps kept at least initially in the church of Santa Maria Antiqua, a palatine chapel in Rome dating to the time of the Byzantine duchy.

The problems of goldsmithing and silversmithing were exceptionally popular and held an important position in the mathematical education in Byzantium, even during the last decades of Byzantine Empire, which were times of decadence and poverty. The usefulness of those problems in the construction of jewelers and mintage is obvious, as the value of the golden coin was continually underestimated. It is presumable that the interest of the Byzantine in the alloys of metal had been increased, because of the deals, too. Goldsmithing was considered to be a " holy and divine art " throughout the ages. In the imperial courts, philosophers taught even the emperor. Byzantine emperors depended on the work of those philosophers, in order their palaces to compete as far as the decoration with those of Arabians and later with west. In the codex vindobonensis phil. Gr. 65 (φ. 11r-126r) of the 15 th century (1436) most problems of goldsmithing refer to alloys of silver, as well as to those of gold only with silver. The kind of problems that the purity of gold in carats, which someone takes as a pledge, is not known is of great interest. This purity can be found with the calculation of a new alloy, by using a method which the writer describes in the chapter 113. The nameless author of the manuscript, also, mentions a method to increase the purity of a metal, that is with which way, by mixing quantities of silver of different purity (dissimilar ogiōn per liters), we can achieve 10 ½ ogies per liters purity of silver in the final alloy. Although there is no reference in the manuscript to the methods of silver plating, it is sure that they knew them very well, as the trachea (τραχέα: kind of copper coin) were silver plated in order to take the look of a silver coin. Nowadays the method that they used is unknown. In our manuscript the condition " epivolē chalkōmatos " (επιβολή χαλκώματος) is used when it is a matter of adulteration of silver or gold and " lagarissai " (λαγαρίσαι), when the gold is going to become more pure.

Of old pieces of goldsmithery cutlery has probably survived in largest numbers. Even though it is simple and modestly decorated, it is often an invaluable source of data on goldsmithery, goldsmiths and their marks, as well as old customs. A perfect example of this is the cutlery set (a spoon, a fork and a knife) in a remarkable case, offered for sale by Kunsthandel Helga Matzke. It is a small but important artefact, testifying to the quality of early-modern-era goldsmithery in Royal Prussia. It was crafted by Johann Bartolomowicz, a goldsmith working in Lidzbark Warmiński (Heilsberg) in the years 1694–1710, whose works known up to now were religious paraments. The holders of the cutlery are decorated with coins; best preserved are the coins set in the scoop of the spoon. Those that can be identified include Prussian three-grosz coins issued by Duke Albrecht von Hohenzollern (1541 and 1544), a rare three-grosz coin of Duke Georg Friedrich von Hohenzollern-Ansbach (probably 1590), a King Sigismund III Vasa three-grosz coin emitted in Riga (1590) and a King Sigismund I the Old three-grosz coin emitted in Gdańsk (Danzig) (1540). Using coins to decorate tableware, particularly mugs, became popular in the mid-17th c. among goldsmiths in Brandenburg Prussia, especially in Berlin and Królewiec (Königsberg), and Pomerania, and to a lesser extent also in Royal Prussia. Mugs were often decorated with three-grosz Polish and Prussian coins of the type used by Bartolomowicz; his usage of coins is a creative echo of that practice.
Sets similar to the one in question appeared in the mid-16th c., at first they were luxurious wedding presents serving as personal table cutlery or travelling kits. Then their role changed: they became christening gifts and it is in this function, although no longer as popular as in the 19th and 20th c., they have survived until today.

Seit 1440 bewahrt der Freisinger Domschatz eine byzantinische Ikone mit kostbarer Metallverkleidung, die der Legende nach vom Evangelisten Lukas gemalt worden sein soll. Ihre Ursprünge und späteren Umgestaltungen sowie der weite Reiseweg mit den Stationen Thessaloniki, Konstantinopel, Mailand, England und Wien sind zwar grundsätzlich bekannt, jedoch bedarf diese prominente Ikone dringend weiterer aktueller Forschungen mit neuesten Methoden, da vieles noch im Dunkeln liegt.
Anlässlich des Symposiums wurden erstmals grundlegende kunsttechnologische Analysen von Holz, Malerei, Metall und Emails durch die ETH Zürich, TU München, Lehrstuhl für Restaurierung, Kunsttechnologie und Konservierungswissenschaft, die Archäologische Staatssammlung München, das Doerner Institut sowie das Institut für Bestandserhaltung und Restaurierung (IBR) der Bayerischen Staatsbibliothek München durchgeführt. Eine internationale Gruppe von HistorikerInnen, Kunst- und KulturwissenschaftlerInnen wie auch TheologInnen haben sich nun von neuem intensiv mit der Ikone und all ihren Aspekten beschäftigt. Die Ergebnisse ihrer Forschungen werden im Rahmen des zweitägigen Symposiums präsentiert.
