History of Ethnomusicology

The ancient Greeks already used to give ethnic names (Doric, Phrygian, Lydian, etc.) to their different scales, and observations on differences in music of the various nations always raised the interest of musicians and philosophers. Yet, it was only in the late nineteenth century that “comparative musicology” (i.e. ethnomusicology) became an institutional science. An important role in this process was played by Carl Stumpf, a former pupil of Brentano’s who pioneered these researches in Berlin. Stumpf founded the Phonogrammarchiv (1900) to collect recordings of folk and extra-European music and a dedicated journal, the Sammelbände für vergleichende Musikwissenschaft. Musical consonance – he claimed – lays in this level of “tonal fusion”, not in the allegedly “natural” series of the harmonic partials of a vibrating chord, as suggested by the naturalists of all times from Pythagoras to Stumpf’s great contemporary Hermann Helmholtz. Although Stumpf later revised and finally abandoned this theory, its permanent value lays in its opposition to dominant naturalistic approaches. The fundamentally Eurocentric stance of naturalistic theories of music is also fiercely contrasted by Stumpf’s pupil Erich Hornbostel, who suggests that music ought to be considered as culture, rather than as nature, and focuses attention on the eventually melting human cultures.

Resumen: El artículo parte del interés existente en círculos etnomusicológicos por el nuevo campo interdisciplinar de los estudios sobre el sonido (del inglés sound studies) para apuntar algunas paradojas históricas que este acercamiento plantea. En concreto, trata sobre los inicios de la musicología comparada, hasta los años treinta del siglo pasado, en Europa y los Estados Unidos, y presenta los modelos conceptuales, prevalentemente textuales, que se asentaron entonces y que contribuyeron a invisibilizar el papel de las primeras tecnologías de grabación audio en la definición del objeto etnomusicológico. También reflexiona sobre cómo se argumentó la separación del ámbito de las grabaciones de campo del de las grabaciones comerciales. En último extremo, el artículo invita a reconsiderar la historia de la etnomusicología desde los estudios sobre el sonido.

Piotr Dahlig w jednym ze swoich artykułów wchodzące w aktywność zawodową począwszy od końca XX wieku pokolenie młodych etnomuzykologów określił jako „piątą generację” polskich badaczy. Jest to grupa bardzo liczna, co zawdzięczamy silnemu wzrostowi zainteresowania tematyką etnomuzykologiczną wśród studentów muzykologii na przestrzeni ostatniego dwudziestolecia. Artykuł, wykorzystując wypowiedzi absolwentów muzykologii specjalizujących się w etnomuzykologii, analizuje powody podjęcia tej specjalizacji i postawy badawcze. Rozpatrując tematykę prac dyplomowych autor zastanawia się nad głównymi kierunkami zainteresowań młodego pokolenia etnomuzykologów. Te ustalenia zestawione są z aktualnie obowiązującymi programami nauczania w zakresie etnomuzykologii oraz sytuacją zawodową środowiska zawodowych badaczy. W konkluzji autor próbuje wskazać główne kierunki zagrożeń i szans dla rozwoju dyscypliny w Polsce w przyszłości.

The paper presents a critical survey of the terms and concepts used within the discipline of ethnomusicology in order to identify the "kind" of music studied by the discipline itself: "primitive". "ethnic", "traditional" etc. All these concepts are considered by the author as disguises of the myth of one and the same "otherness" which is supposed to characterize all the musics different from the western art music. Only overcoming this myth the scholars will be able to face the complexity of nowadays Worldwide musical scene and improve the theoretical and methodological tools at their disposal.

Artykuł stanowi omówienie wątków, będących muzyką żydowską w rozumieniu Joachima Brauna (Braun 1986:87), jak też polskich nawiązań do muzyki żydowskiej wyrażonych explicite, a zawartych w zbiorze dzieł Oskara Kolberga. Ten wybitny XIX-wieczny polski dokumentalista jako jeden z pierwszych w Europie uważał obyczaje żydowskie za "warte szczegółowych studiów". Jego koncentracja na folklorze głównych społeczności zamieszkujące ziemie Rzeczypospolitej sprawiła, że głównie odnotowywał swoiste "odbicia" kultury żydowskiej - często ukazywanej w krzywym zwierciadle - w kulturze Polaków, Ukraińców, Białorusinów i Litwinów. Nie wolno jednak zapominać o tym, że niewielka ilość zapisów repertuaru żydowskiego stanowi jedne z pierwszych prób dokumentacji na świecie. Fakt, że stanowią one jedynie margines badań Kolberga nie upoważnia nas do zapominania o pionierskiej roli jaką odegrał ojciec polskiej etnografii w tym względzie.

En Etnomusicología el trabajo de campo representa un momento importante de la recopilación de informaciones. Su realización implica también un conjunto de interacciones sociales entre el investigador y los informantes, que tiene en las entrevistas en profundidad el momento más destacado. En esta tesis se analiza el funcionamiento y el significado de las entrevistas desde la perspectiva interaccional propuesta por Erving Goffman en sus estudios. A partir de una trascripción muy detallada, realizada siguiendo los criterios del análisis de la conversación, se llega a individuar unos mecanismos que estructuran las entrevista y su desarrollo. El conocimiento de estos elementos representa una interesante aportación a la comprensión de las dinámicas que rigen el funcionamiento de las entrevistas en profundidad, así como para el desarrollo epistemológico de la Etnomusicología.

This paper puts in conversation two apparently irreconcilable worlds. The first is that of George Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess (1935), a “folk opera” reminiscent of black minstrelsy racial stereotypes, and indebted to the Romantic conception of Volk as it had been applied to the U.S. context by two generations of musicians and scholars, from Antonin Dvořák and Frederick Henry Koch to John and Alan Lomax. The second is that of Roberto Leydi, one of the scholars responsible for the foundation of Italian ethnomusicology after World War II. An admirer of Porgy and Bess, Leydi developed in his youth a strong interest for American black music, which to his mind provided an example of those “folk roots” he was looking for as an alternative to the official culture promoted by fascism. In the late 1950s, Leydi began collecting folk music materials from Italian rural areas, and organized special shows featuring the “authentic” interpreters of such traditions. Based on archival material and scholarly literature (Radano and Bohlman 2000, Crawford 2006, Stoller 2009, André 2018, Ferraro 2015), this paper pursues a twofold goal. On the one hand, I aim to problematize the history of Italian ethnomusicology by placing it in a longer historical trajectory of racial representation. On the other, I argue that precisely this narrative, despite its burden of misunderstandings and cultural appropriations, allowed Leydi and his collaborators to carve out for themselves a new identity in their own country, while giving national visibility to previously neglected folk musical genres and practices.
