This article deals with the relationship between processes of assimilation and translation: to what extent do processes of translation depend on a ‘making similar’, a ‘resembling’: an assimilation of the foreign language to one’s own? To what extent can translation be described as ‘to make similar’? Is it possible that translation also entails moments of incorporation? This line of questioning extends beyond the purely linguistic problems of translation and touches on what can be called cultural translation. This concept has also been significantly shaped by Homi Bhabha, who bases his considerations on the one hand on a Concept of Hybridity, on the other hand on Walter Benjamin’s essay The Task of the Translator.
For Bhabha, translation becomes a way of imitating an original, in which the predominance of the original dissolves through the possibility for it to be copied and transformed, thus becoming a sort of original, "that is never finished or complete in itself." This implies a concept of the original that does not appear as a homogenous, static unit, but rather as something unfinished, as something still in motion. This conception of a composite, non-homogenous, and incomplete original has an effect on both our understanding of assimilation processes as well as processes of cultural translation.
In this article I will show why the concept of hybridity alone is not sufficient to do justice to the complexity inherent in processes of cultural translation. Indeed, my thesis is that we need a second concept as well, namely: grafting.

Vivimos en una sociedad de identidades frágiles, volubles, en un continuo devenir. Esta nueva modernidad, caracterizada por el desmoronamiento de las fronteras y la libertad en las categorizaciones, impone al individuo la responsabilidad de construirse a sí mismo. En este contexto, ha surgido un interés creciente durante los últimos años por el estudio del cuerpo en tanto que texto, es decir, una superficie donde determinar las particularidades del yo. En concreto, el presente trabajo se centrará en el cuerpo femenino y, más en particular, en el pelo de la mujer. A partir de la premisa de que el cuerpo femenino es un texto, con capacidad de representación, planteamos la siguiente hipótesis: el pelo de la mujer es un terreno fértil para la traducción de las múltiples ideologías que pueblan la sociedad actual y que sirven como instrumento de empoderamiento y autodefinición. Nuestro objetivo es aplicar la nueva definición de traducción, mucho más amplia e interdisciplinar, a los procesos de autodeterminación que se cristalizan en el cuerpo femenino. Nuestro corpus estará formado por el relato “De imitación”, de la escritora nigeriana Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, y nuestra metodología será interdisciplinar; así, incluirá obras de los campos de la filosofía y la sociología, como las de Foucault (1979) o Bauman (1999/2017) y de los estudios sobre el género y el cuerpo, como los trabajos de Vidal (2002), Bordo (1993/2003), Thomas & Ahmed (2004), Fraser & Greco (2007) y Blackman & Featherstone (2010).

Over the last decades, migrations have massively expanded. Societies are becoming increasingly diverse and cultural interchanges are becoming very common. The experience of migration poses many different  challenges to those who live it. It places them in an in-between state,where they do not completely belong to the culture of origin or to the target community. This is inevitably reflected in the way they speak, which is often a mixture of two or more languages. Some migrant writers have depicted their border experiences in their works,such as Catalan author with  Moroccan origins Najat El Hachmi. This article  aims to explore the self-translations of an immigrant  young woman  in  the  novel La filla estrangera  (EI Hachmi, 2015), who  struggles to conciliate her hybrid identity.

This reality is portrayed in the short story "A Private Experience", by writer Chimamanda Adichie, which we will use as an example to analyze the social processes of translation happening in situations of conflict. In order to do so, we will apply the theoretical reflections on the Other to the social relationships between the main characters and we will study their attitudes towards difference. Nuestra sociedad se caracteriza por el contacto entre individuos con orígenes diferentes. Esta realidad se describe en el relato “Una experiencia privada”, de la escritora Chimamanda Adichie, donde analizaremos los procesos sociales de traducción que ocurren en medio del conflicto, aplicaremos las reflexiones teóricas sobre el extraño a las relaciones entre los personajes y estudiaremos sus actitudes ante la diferencia.
