This paper presents a full characterization of the thermal parameters to improve the thermal Mason's model for BAW resonator design, in particular, the temperature dependence of the velocity TC(V), the elasticity TC(C33 D), the piezoelectric coefficient TC(e33) and the permittivity TC(¿33) for the AlN film. These parameters associated with the piezoelectric theory assesses the TC(e33) coefficient. To do so, the temperature piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) technique is used to measure the temperature dependence of the (d33eff) coefficient. The thermal RF measurement is used to characterize the TC(¿33) and the ultrasonic picosecond tool with its heating system is used to characterize the TC(C33 D). Finally, the thermal Mason's model is compared with the experimental response of the BAW resonator.

This Essay assesses Samuel Moyn's revisionist argument that human rights were born only in the mid-twentieth century and then mostly as a shrewd Christian response to the secular liberalism and communist materialism that endangered the Church's political interests and influence. This account largely ignores the West's enduring and evolving tradition of rights, which have been an integral part of its commitment to the rule of law and constitutional order. Jurists since classical Roman and medieval times used rights language to define the law's protection, support, limitations, and entitlements of various persons and groups in society, and to map the proper interactions between political and other authorities and their respective subjects. Early modern Catholics, Protestants, and Enlightenment liberals built on this tradition, setting out most of the rights that the twentieth century declared to be universal rights of humankind. Moyn exaggerates the conservative Catholic influences on the mid-twentieth-century international human rights movement, and fails to credit the wide range of religious and philosophical views that were equally influential. And he exaggerates the secular character of contemporary human rights discussions, and fails to recognize the essential role of religion and belief in making rights real.

For the past half century, David Little has done path-breaking work in exploring the religious foundations and dimensions of human rights. While working on a wide interreligious canvas, he has focused in especially on some of the Calvinist foundations of human rights, notably in the work of John Calvin, John Locke, and Roger Williams. This chapter offers an appreciative appraisal of Little's contributions, and shows its place in the emerging scholarship on Calvinism and law and on religion and human rights.

Recently, we reported that amorphous TeO2 thin films possess a high negative temperature coefficient of delay (TCD) contrary to its bulk counterpart, and are useful for the temperature stability of LiNbO3 based surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices possessing a positive TCD. In the present work TeO2 thin film deposited under 60% O2 and 40% Ar gas environment, is found to

Due to the required computational effort of 4D ultrasound imaging, such systems depend on low complexity techniques like nearest neighbor interpolation, which affects volume quality. Moreover, more accurate techniques like normalized convolution, backward trilinear interpolation, and forward spherical and ellipsoidal Gaussian kernel, are avoided in real-time imaging because of the tight reconstruction time. The goal of this work is to utilize recent commercial graphics hardware technology of graphics processing unit (GPU) to speed up the reconstruction time while increasing the quality of displayed volume.

Atrial fibrillation is the most common type of cardiac arrhythmia that now affects over 2.2 million adults in the United States alone. Currently fluoroscopy is the most common method for guiding interventional electrophysiological procedures. We are developing a 9-F forward-looking intracardiac ultrasound catheter for real-time volumetric imaging. We designed and fabricated a 64-element 10-MHz CMUT ring array with through-wafer via interconnects. We also designed custom front-end electronics to be closely integrated with the CMUT array at the tip of the catheter for improved SNR. This integrated circuit (IC) is composed of preamplifiers and protection circuitry, and can directly interface a standard imaging system. This multi-channel IC is capable of passing up to ±50-V bipolar pulses. An 8-channel front-end IC was fabricated based on this circuit topology. Additionally, a flexible PCB was designed for the integration of ring array with front-end electronics. We have acquired a PC-based real-time imaging platform and demonstrated real-time imaging with the ring array. We have also shown volume images using off-line full synthetic aperture image reconstruction method. The presented experimental results demonstrate the performance of our forward-looking volumetric intracardiac imaging approach. We are currently working on the final catheter integration and further development of our real-time imaging methods.

This paper presents a systematic ultrasonic Doppler measurement of retinal blood flow in vivo. In the method, a needle transducer with a beveled tip of 45deg was inserted into the vitreous cavity to access retinal vessels in the rabbit eye. A directional high-frequency (HF) pulsed-wave (PW) Doppler system was used to measure the blood flow velocity from different locations of rabbit retina vessels. The results indicate that the ultrasonic Doppler measurements of retinal blood speed were repeatable and reliable. This measurement would be useful to investigate retinal vein occlusion and to monitor blood speed of retinal vessels during/after surgery.

Evanescent waves must be considered in propagation problems whenever scattering, diffusion, or diffraction by a finite object are investigated. In the context of phononic crystals, they appear very naturally within frequency band gaps. Since no waves can propagate within a band gap, only evanescent waves are left to explain the exponentially-decreasing transmission of acoustic waves. We have extended the classical plane wave expansion (PWE) method so that it includes complex wave vectors in the direction of propagation. To do so, it is necessary to consider a fixed frequency and to solve for the wave vector, in contrast to the traditional way of obtaining band structures by considering any Bloch wave vector within the first Brillouin zone and solving for the frequency of allowed modes. The new complex PWE method has been used to generate band structures for two-dimensional silicon - void phononic crystals. Both propagative and evanescent solutions are found at once. The decay constants within band gaps are thus found and shown to depend on the wave polarization. The consideration of complex wave vectors also allows us to identify clearly the different branch systems in the band structure and to connect bands below and above band gaps. Furthermore, the distribution of the acoustic fields of evanescent modes can be computed. Their transformation from below to above a band gap as well as within the band gap itself is shown.
