<p>Strains N402 (WT; black bars), NW283 (<i>ΔcreA;</i> grey bars), and JS014 (<i>ΔrhaR</i>; open bars) were used. Relative transcription levels were measured by RT-qPCR in samples obtained 2 hours after mycelium transfer to 5 mM L-rhamnose or 5 mM L-rhamnose plus 50 mM D-glucose. Relative transcript levels of <i>rhtA</i> and <i>rhaB</i> were calculated using the pre-culture condition of each strain (D-sorbitol 100 mM; t = 18h), sampled prior to the mycelium transfer to inducing and inducing/repressing conditions, as reference (*). Results are given as relative transcript ratios in logarithmic scale (lg(10)). The values provided in the figures correspond to two biological replicates per culture condition. Error bars are means of three technical replicates.</p

This essay clarifies what it means to know mathematics by examining ways of knowing multiplication and explores what those ways of knowing imply for the teaching and learning of mathematics in schools. It reviews the perennial argument about whether computational skill or conceptual understanding should guide the school curriculum. A mathematical analysis of the process of multiplication, a conceptual analysis of mathematical cognition, and speculative research on classroom teaching and learning are presented to support this argument. Included are descriptions of several lessons in which children are being taught about multiplying large numbers. The descriptions focus on the connections that can be made in teaching among students ' naive, concrete, computational, and conceptual knowledge. (Author)

he origins of area, foreign language, and international studies centers on campuses in the United States stem from an “elite consensus” in the late 1950s that international expertise was an important condition for successful foreign policy, including diplomacy, military engagements, and espionage. This consensus has since been shattered, with the result that this unique system of federal funding for the projects to which most of us have dedicated our professional lives is imperiled. The alternative to a policy establishment that is informed about the world might be a policy establishment that is dangerously ignorant.
