Impact of cartoons on youth in relation to the other TV programs

Television has become a member of every Indian family. Most of the children are eagerly watching cartoon programs on television. This is a subject of research that how television educates the children about various aspect of life and what are the impacts of cartoon programs on children. This research indicates the positive and negative attitude of rural children towards various aspects of cartoon programs.

The post-liberalization era impacted Indian media significantly. Indian television in particular was a major beneficiary of this change. The programming content, technique, reach and reception got significantly reconfigured. The evolution of exclusive children’s television channels was a major development in this scenario. The last fifteen years have witnessed the rise of many 24-hour children’s television channels in India. The myriad content (Western, Japanese and indigenous) on children’s television channels is redefining the social and cultural construction of childhood. However academic research studies that articulate this are very few and far between in the Indian context.
The role of television in developing ideas on gender roles and identities has been researched in different global contexts. This paper would endeavour to build a critical narrative on the representation of gender (masculine, feminine and others) in cartoon shows on children’s television channels in India.
In this research, the textual analysis of the narrative of four most popular cartoon shows on children’s television channels as demonstrated by the television ratings has been conducted. The messages being delivered through television programming have been analyzed by examining the gender roles fulfilled by different cartoon characters – feminine, masculine or others – and how gender stereotypes are propagated or challenged.
The weekend episodes of the top four shows for three months (March – May 2014) are the sample for textual analysis. The research has been contextualized in the feminist theory paradigm and uses Stuart Hall’s theorizing of ‘representation’/ ‘encoding’ and ‘decoding’ for the narrative analysis of these televisions shows (texts and visuals).

Çizgi filmler, çocuklara,  sosyal yaşama, ilişkilere ve bu ilişkilerin dinamiğine ilişkin bilgileri sunmaktadır. Bu dinamik göz önüne alınarak  araştırmada,“Karlar ülkesi” çizgi filmi temel alınarak, çizgi film karakterlerinin aile içi ilişkileri, çocukluk travmaları, benlik algıları ve psikolojik iyi oluş sürecinde prososyal davranışların etkisi ve çocukların bu dinamiklere ilişkin algıları araştırılmıştır. 
Yöntem:
Araştırmada nitel ve nicel değerlendirme modeli birlikte kullanılmıştır. Araştırma’da çizgi filmin içeriği, karakterlerin ilişkileri ve bu ilişkiler bağlamındaki ifadeleri  dikkate alınarak,  Çocukluk Çağı Travmaları Ölçeği ( Yargiç,Tutkun,Şar)' nin  Duygusal istismar, Duygusal ihmal boyutları; Rosenberg  Benlik Saygısı Ölçeği'  nin Benlik Saygısı, İnsanlara Güven Duyma, Depresif Duygulanım ve Psişik İzolasyon  boyutları;  Çocuk Prososyal Davranış Değerlendirme Ölçeği(Bağcı) ;  Psikolojik İyi Olma Ölçeği ( Ryff ve Keyes) doğrultusunda  içerik analizi yöntemi kullanılmıştır.
Ayrıca, çizgi karakterlerin prososyal davranışları ve psikolojik iyi oluşları, ilköğretim  3. ve 4. sınıfından 46 öğrenci, ortaöğretim 5. ve 6. sınıflarından 60 öğrenci  ölçekler yoluyla değerlendirilmiş; bu öğrencilerin yanısıra  ilköğretim 1. ve 2. Sınıf öğrencilerinden oluşan 25 kişilik bir bir grub da dahil edilerek  "görüşme" yapılmıştır.

Bulgular:
İnceleme konusu çizgi film bağlamında,  Prososyal davranışların, psikolojik iyi olma sürecini destekleyebildiği  söyleyebilmek mümkündür.
Çocukluk travmalarının, duygusal istismar ve  ihmal boyutunda ise tüm karakterlerin aile içi etkileşimlerden etkilendiği görülmüştür. Bu sürecin
benlik algısı, insanlara  güvenme, depresif duygulanım ve psişik izolasyon boyutlarında karakterlerin gelişimini olumsuz etkilediği, prososyal davranış gösteren karakterin (Anna) bu dinamiklerden en az etkilenen karakter olarak,3., 4., 5. ve 6. sınıf öğrencileri tarafından da olumlu bulunduğu görülmüştür. Prososyal davranışların, psikolojik iyi olma sürecine katkısı ile çizgi karakterlerin yaşamındaki değişimi, 1. ve 2. sınıf öğrencileri, üst sınıflara göre yapmakta zorlanmışlardır.
Cinsiyete göre karakterlerin değerlendirilmesi açısından farklılık bulunmamakla birlikte, kızların, erkek öğrencilere göre daha fazla filmden etkilendikleri ve başlangıçta prososyal davranışları daha az olan karakter (Else) ile özdeşimi tercih ettikleri bulunmuştur.
Sonuç:
Araştırma konusu olan çizgi film doğrultusunda, psikolojik iyi olma sürecinin prososyal davranışlarla desteklenebileceği ve çizgi filmlerin katkı yapabileceği söylenebilse de çocukların bu çıkarımı yapabilmesi için yetişkin desteğine ihtiyaç duyduğu görülmektedir. Bu sürecin ise  gelişimsel ve  sosyo ekonomik kültürel faktörler dikkate alınarak  gerçekleştirilebileceği düşünülmektedir.

Nowadays the literary education has to deal with the deep impact and omnipresence of mass media in the lives of children. Through those media and without any doubt, animation plays a central role in the non formal education of children. In our opinion, cartoons feed the intertext of children in many ways. First of all, they provide a literary tradition through references to tales, folktales and also books in a process similar to the literature. When the audience knows the reference retrieves the information he knows and adds which it receives, which may be the direct recall of a story, its reconstruction, parody, etc. When the audience does not know this information tries to insert it into a recognizable system such as the system of traditional tales, fantasy novels, etc. The latter process also helps to build knowledge about the same story. Second, the cartoon characters allude often to literary tradition without using directly the story but referring to the characteristics (the love drama of Romeo and Juliet, for instance). Sometimes these references focus on characteristics of nameless characters, but with a long tradition in literature (the knight or the princess) and can be used to "save" the reader some efforts about the decoding or in order to be parodied.Third, the animation also provides children a catalog of literary resources that expands with increasingly sophistication of current drawings.
