Industrial Heritage

The 18th century water-powered ironworks at Agoreggi, in the Basque country, was reconstructed based on contemporary historical records and archaeological investigations. In 1994-1999 three campaigns of experiments were carried out with the aim of reproducing the scale and technology of the iron production. This paper is a fully illustrated description of the experiments and, in particular, of the practical problems of the air delivery system and the use of the copper tobera (tuyere). In 1999 six agoas (blooms) were made of varying quality and size, the largest being a 30kg ferritic agoa smelted from 140kg of ore, but this is only about half the scale of the 18th century production.
It subsequently transpired that the mouth of the tobera used for the experiments should have been 170% larger, thus allowing more air to be blown into the furnace, and the making of agoas closer to the 18th century size. Review of heritage places in the old Victorian gold town of Walhalla
The heritage review has included the following, as included in this attachment:
 Preparation of an illustrated database including all identified individual places and areas (1984, 1999 reports), most of which are include in the heritage overlay;
 Brief site check if these places remain as identified on the ground, revealing a number that have been removed or altered;
 Brief review of the data used to assess these places in 1984 (the extra places listed in the 1999 report had no documentation) with reference to online primary sources and recent publications on Walhalla where available;
 Revision of the Statement of Significance of each contributory or significant place (Heritage Victoria format);
 Brief review of related heritage documents referred to elsewhere in this report, including the latest heritage review undertaken by Context P/L where it relates to Walhalla;
 Site visit for potential heritage places for future assessment; and
 Recommendations for the heritage management of each identified place or area.

This paper focuses on challenges to the protection of industrial heritage in Europe. While technical monuments such as mines are being protected and even achieve high status, there is considerably less interest in engaging with other elements of the industrial past, such as workers’ housing or the history of the labour movement. This leads to the paradoxical effect of preserving industrial landscapes without workers, which prompts the question of what exactly is meant by industrial heritage. I argue that the reasons for that are diverse and include: a) ambiguity regarding protected values, b) city branding, c) isolation of industrial past, d) unclear meaning of de/industrialization. It only addresses those challenges that the industrial monuments and industrial past can become a true heritage.

Sanayi devrimiyle beraber yeni kentleşme sorunları da gündeme gelmiştir. Fabrikaların kentlerde açılmaya başlaması, kırdaki tarımla uğraşan nüfusu kente çekmiş, kentler giderek kalabalıklaşmaya başlamıştır. Suyun sanayide kullanılması, gündelik hayattaki kullanımını aksatmış ve bu koşullar altında giderek kalabalık olmaya başlayan kentler yaşanamaz hale gelmiştir. Bu olumsuz kent yaşantısının parçası olan ve “Başka bir kent mümkün mü?” sorusunu soran Robert Owen, St Simon, Etienne Cabet, Jean Baptiste Godin ve Charles Fourier kent ve kır hayatının olumlu yanlarını bir araya getirerek, yaşanılır yeni şehirler kurgulamış, 19. ve 20. Yüzyılın üretim mekanlarının temeli olan fikirleri ortaya atmış ve hatta bazılarını inşa etmişlerdir. Bu yeni şehirler kentlerden uzakta, kır ve kent hayatının olumlu yanlarını hemhal ederek, yeni bir şehir ve yaşam önerisi olarak inşa edilmiştir.
Bu tez “yeni şehir” kavramını 20. yüzyılın yeni şehir önerisi Ebenezer Howard’ın Bahçe Şehir’i üzerinden ele almaktadır. Bu tezde Bahçe Şehir’lerin yerleşme biçimden çok, inşa edilme, yayılma ve farklı coğrafyalarda yeniden yorumlanma biçimleri üzerinden “yeni şehir” kavramının alt nedenleri görünür kılınmıştır. Birinci Dünya Savaşı sonrasında ve İkinci Dünya Savaşı öncesinde inşa edilen Bahçe Şehir’ler üzerinden Bahçe Şehir’leri çeşitlendiren ve üretim ilişkilerinin belirleyen politikalar tartışmaya açılmıştır. Bu tezde Birinci Dünya Savaşı sonrasında inşa edilen ve Bahçe Şehir’in ideolojik ve yaşamsal olarak izlerinin görüldüğü Sümerbank’ın ilk beş dokuma ve iplik fabrikası’na; Kayseri, Ereğli, Nazilli, Bursa ve Malatya’ya odaklanılmaktadır.
1930’lu yıllarda devletçi ekonomi modelinin bir sonucu olarak inşa edilen bu fabrikalar, yalnızca bulundukları kentte bir istihdam alanı yaratmayıp, erken Cumhuriyet dönemi yaşam pratiklerinin tanıtımı için de bir araç olmuşlardır. Türkiye Cumhuriyetinin ekonomik ve sosyal kalkınmasının temelini atmış ve lokomotifi olmuşlardır. Bu tez bu fabrikalara bugünden bakmaktadır. Erken Cumhuriyetin devletçi ekonomi politikalarının var ettiği bu fabrikalar, 2000’li yıllarda serbest ekonomi politikalarının gerekliliklerini karşılamadıkları ve rekabetçi piyasa koşullarına yenik düştükleri için kapatılmış, özelleştirilmiş, yıkılmış veya dönüştürülmüştür. Bu fabrikalar üzerinden mekanı var eden ve üretim ilişkilerini belirleyen politikalar değiştiğinde önce mekanın sonra da o mekanda gerçekleşen davranış pratiklerinin nasıl değiştiği yapılan arşiv taraması ve yerinde yapılan tespit ve belgelemelerle karşılaştırılmış ve görünür kılınmıştır.
Fabrikaların Cumhuriyetin hafızasındaki yeri ve bir endüstri mirası olma özelliği bu tezin motivasyonunu oluşturmuştur. Sonucunda da korunmuş, dönüştürülmüş veya yıkılmış bu fabrikalarla ilgili araştırma sorularına cevap olan tutarlı bir tez ortaya konulmaya çalışılmıştır.
Bu fabrikalara bugünden bakarak “Mekanın üretim ilişkilerini belirleyen politikalar değiştiğinde mekan kendini hangi işlevlerde ve formlarda var eder?” sorusuna cevap aranmıştır. Albayrak Tekstil’e satılan Ereğli, Marmara Girişim Grubuna satılan Malatya, belediyeye devredilerek Merinos Park’a dönüştürülen Bursa, üniversite kampüsüne dönüştürülen Kayseri ve Nazilli’de yer alan Sümerbank Dokuma ve İplik Fabrikaları bu tezin vaka analizini oluşturmuştur.

El presente trabajo acomete la tarea de investigar las construcciones vernaculas del municipio de Vega de San Mateo, en la comarca de las Medianias (Gran Canaria). Un conjunto de ejemplos de la arquitectura y la ingenieria historica, que conformaba sin duda el pasisaje tradicional de su municipio, y de los que aun se cuenta con un numero importante de testimonios.

The city of Lodz, its urban layout, architectural appearance and socio-economical condition are results of a particular development process, which is exceptional as compared with evolution of other large European cities. The unique urban environment gives the city strong identity. It is however still a challenge to use these spatial and architectural qualities to establish emotional bonds among local community with. The successful re-use of industrial buildings have helped in this matter. The next step is to use this approach in large scale renewal of the Lodz city centre. It seems of crucial importance, since if residents like their own city, accept local heritage, fill the historical space with new ideals and narrations, then the city will be attractive for them and visitors alike.

El presente trabajo es una aproximación a la investigación, a través de las fuentes existentes, de las construcciones vernáculas del municipio de Vega de San Mateo, en la comarca de las Medianías (Gran Canaria), como muestra del rico patrimonio industrial existente en Canarias.

No âmbito das comemorações dos 150 anos do nascimento de Alfredo da Silva, este livro destaca, na obra multifacetada que a Companhia União Fabril ergueu no Barreiro, as produções arquitetónicas no perímetro industrial e social da empresa na localidade, mas também os reflexos patrimoniais e sociais que essa obra legou por todo o concelho e que ainda hoje vincam a sua identidade, desde os grupos desportivos às escolas ou mesmo aos edifícios religiosos. Era tal a omnipresença da CUF, tantas vezes insuspeita, nos locais do quotidiano barreirense que se pretende dá-la a conhecer de forma integrada à comunidade, aos interessados no tema e aos especialistas que se interessem pelo estudo desse significativo legado.

El proyecto Espacio Portus surge en julio de 2019 como un proyecto de educación en patrimonio para dar a conocer la historia y el patrimonio material e inmaterial del puerto y la ría de Avilés. Se trata de un proyecto innovador en lo que a espacios culturales se refiere, puesto que se abre a los nuevas interpretaciones y usos de los paisajes históricos portuarios desarrollando su puesta en valor desde las metodologías de la educación en patrimonio para todos los ciudadanos.

A conservation analysis, plan and policy for the historic Pipemakers Park which was the site of Joseph Raleigh's boiling down works, the Australian Meat Preserving Company, Australian Frozen Meat Export Company and the Hume Pipe Company, from the 1850s to 1970s, and has been restored and converted for use as a park visitor centre and venue for Melbourne's Living Museum of the West, Australia's first Ecomuseum.

Historically speaking, industry has been perceived as a threat to historical preservation and heritage in general; and for this reason, these categories have been seen as mutually exclusive. However, since the decline of industry in Europe, the relation between the two has been gradually reconsidered. The European Union (EU) has engaged with the industrial heritage, even if not wholeheartedly. The reason, I argue, is the reluctance among the Member States and the broader European public to recognise industrial heritage as a legitimate part of the European heritage. There are, however, very good reasons to fully embrace this past-not only because the EU's deeply entrenched in the industry, but also because it can allow the broader public to embrace a transnational understanding of European history.

Il saggio "L'immagine dell'impresa" è stato pubblicato nel 2011 nel catalogo a corredo della mostra documentaria "Qui...dove la terra finisce e il mare comincia. Memoria e immagine dell'impresa", tenutasi a Brindisi nel 2011 a Palazzo Nervegna. La ricerca e la mostra, promossa dall'AIPAI, Associazione Italiana per il Patrimonio Archeologico industriale, dall'Archivio di Stato di Brindisi e dal CNR IBAM di Lecce, si sono svolte col il sostegno di UnionCamere di Puglia, Camera di Commercio e Confindustria di brindisi. Il Liceo Artistico "E. Simone" di Brindisi, con la guida della prof.ssa Giovanna Bozzi, ha realizzato il progetto e gli allestimenti educativi.

""Los depósitos de aguas – soterrados, de superficie o elevados – utilizados mayoritariamente para el almacenaje de aguas de abastecimiento, pero también para las sucias, constituyen una tipología edificatoria cuya característica más sobresaliente es el carácter “oculto” que los espacios que albergan han mantenido durante su vida operativa. Son además casi siempre ámbitos oscuros y misteriosos, características que hacen de ellos, cuando media una brillante intervención arquitectónica, lugares que transmiten emoción a quien los ocupa en sus nuevos usos.

Aunque muchos de ellos, algunos de indudable valor, se han perdido – pongamos el ejemplo del elevado de Salamanca – otros han tenido mayor fortuna y han encontrado nuevas utilizaciones que los han revalorizado prolongando su vida útil.

En la comunicación se examinan las intervenciones realizadas en varios depósitos de superficie o semienterrados, entre otros, en los depósitos del Canal de Isabel II de Madrid, de los de Oviedo, Vitoria y Valencia reconvertidos en contenedores culturales; de los del Sol de Albacete y de la Ciudadela en Barcelona, transformados en bibliotecas; y de los de Cornellá y Lleida convertidos en museos del agua, entre otros.

Finalmente se expone la situación del depósito de aguas fecales de Elorrieta en Bilbao, que forma parte del primer saneamiento moderno realizado en España en la última década del siglo XIX obra del ingeniero Recaredo de Uhagón.

Adaptive reuse has been successfully applied in many types of
facilities. It is possible to see examples of culturally significant
industrial buildings’ adaptive reuse. Altering adaptations as film
spaces has become a fascinating debate recently. The aim of this
study is to investigate efficiency of adapting industrial heritage
buildings as film spaces on the long-term conservation and
sustainable future of these buildings. Three industrial buildings
that have been adaptively reused as film spaces in İstanbul,
Turkey (soap-factory, warehouse for carbonated water and listed
building at Beykoz Leather and Shoe Factory) are cases of this
study. This study concludes that cultural significance is retained
due to minimal changes observed on the external characteristics.
Their reuse as film spaces has enriched the physical, locational/
environmental and social/cultural performance of industrial
heritage buildings. Two different approaches as temporary and
permanent have been investigated. This study concludes that
adapting industrial heritage buildings as film spaces is an
appropriate decision, especially when it is adopted permanently
with holistic/comprehensive approach from the beginning of
adaptation process as creative hub of production. Results suggest
that this approach has brought diverse additional impacts, both to
conservation of these significant buildings and to their locations’
social, physical and economic well-being.

Presence of users as the main actors of each adaptive reuse of a given cultural heritage site heavily depends on the quality of their sensual experience there. This, in turn, seems to stem from how much they trust the integrity and provenance of the heritage attributes and activities pending within such historical sites. This paper aims to define the sincerity and authenticity as influential indicators of the users’ trust in adaptive reuse of cultural heritage sites. To reach the goal, the author hereof has analyzed all the industrial heritage sites in Iran which have been adaptively reused (case studies) and has surveyed 125 visitors. The findings confirm that sincerity and authenticity can largely influence the visitors’ trust and sensitize their experience.

Az örökségturizmus ma „divatos” fogalom, egyben a nagy trendeknek való megfelelés is, egyre gyakrabban találkozhatunk vele termékfejlesztés vagy más turisztikai fejlesztés kapcsán is. Abban azonban eltérőek a vélemények, mi is tartozik pontosan az örökség fogalomkörébe; vannak, akik elsősorban a kulturális értékeket tekintik részeként, mások a természeti értékek egy részét is ide sorolják, s különös helyet foglalnak el mindezek között a Világörökség részei. Az örökségturizmus egyik speciális lehetősége, ha tematikus utakra felfűzve, kiegészítő prog-ramokkal és látnivalókkal érdekesebbé és változatosabbá téve, új közönséget célozhatunk meg. Mindez természetesen egy merőben más, de jelentős kérdésre is ráirányíthatja a figyelmet: az együttműködés szükségességére. Ezen belül izgalmas, szokatlan és kevésbé ismert téma az ipari örökség, mely hazánkban méltatlanul kevés figyelmet kap.

Este livro tem por intuito buscar um aprofundamento de questões conceituais relacionadas à restauração do patrimônio industrial, inserindo-as no contexto atual dos debates sobre preservação. Raramente essas questões são debatidas; a não-observação dos princípios teóricos do restauro na prática, porém, tem conseqüências nefastas e graves. O objetivo deste livro é justamente elaborar uma releitura crítica dos instrumentos teóricos para evidenciar sua aplicabilidade às circunstâncias atuais e para guiar as intervenções concretas nesses bens.

La ciudad de Málaga y su crecimiento poblacional hicieron insuficiente el abastecimiento de agua potable. Para solucionar este problema el obispo Molina Lario financió la construcción de un acueducto que, captanto agua del río Guadalmedina, la trasladase hasta la ciudad. Su fallecimiento antes de la conclusión de las obras determinó que fuese necesario buscar nuevas fuentes de financiación. Seis molinos harineros -movidos con este mismo caudal-, y la adquisición de otros molinos preexistentes, se destinaron, con sus réditos, al mantenimiento de esta impresionantes obra hidráulica. En este artículo se estudian las fuentes que abasteción, tanto para consumo de la población, como para los buques que arribaban a puerto.

Už niekoľko rokov sa aj na Slovensku zdôrazňuje potreba šetrenia energiami, v dôsledku čoho sa pri starších budovách pristupuje k zatepľovaniu obvodových plášťov budov. Klasické zatepľovacie systémy však nie je vhodné použiť vo všetkých prípadoch. Existujú budovy, napríklad pamiatkové objekty, kde sa tradičné zatepľovacie systémy neodporúčajú použiť najmä preto, že menia štruktúru aj proporcie budov. Preto sa hľadala alternatíva využitia pre nový potenciálny materiál. Aerogél. Látka s viacerými výhodnými vlastnosťami, ktorá skĺbuje pozitíva rozličných súčasných materiálov a prináša ďalšie. Svojimi minimálnymi rozmermi môže pomôcť pri rekonštrukciách stavieb, a to najmä tam, kde dimenzie pridaných materiálov hrajú kľúčovú rolu pri zachovaní výrazu a charakteru stavby: pri kultúrnych pamiatkach.

This investigation was undertaken at the request of the City Link Authority, in order to determine whether any archaeological evidence survives on the site of Debney’s Tannery, Mt. Alexander Road, Flemington. This work has been necessary because of the proposed new elevated Western Link freeway which impacts on the site. The archaeological work involved digging test pits with a backhoe and recording evidence of the tannery. The excavation revealed substantial remains of timber structure and tan bark below four metres of fill. Recommendations have been made for future management of the site and action during the freeway construction. These recommendations generally state the need for a watching brief during any disturbance of the artefact layer, but do not require additional archaeological investigation if only the layers of fill are disturbed, ie. the top  three to four metres.
