Innovation In Design Studios

Este trabalho relata e desenvolve uma análise acústica realizada em 2015, apresentando a fundamentação teórica e a metodologia adotadas, discutindo resultados obtidos e apontando para novas perspectivas de pesquisa. Como métodos inovadores destacam-se a análise do comportamento modal da sala pelo critério de Bonello após os resultados de simulação por elementos finitos; a inclusão de representação musical para dar mais visibilidade a imagens mentais próprias à escuta humana. A inclusão de medições realizadas nas salas depois de construídas e devidamente instaladas de mobiliário e equipamentos permitiu estender a análise a outros aspectos de interesse como a disposição dos monitores de áudio.

Using the decade-long community-university partnership in Seattle’s International District, this chapter examines how service-learning studios to have a tangible and positive contribution to the local community beyond the limits of academic calendar. This paper offers concrete lessons that include critical factors such as identifying funding sources, navigating the community process, mobilizing and sustaining human resources, and capacity building as an equally important goal for service-learning studios. Understanding of these lessons can assist studio instructors and their community partners in developing sustained collaborative partnership, and extending the energy and community vision beyond the life span of typical service-learning studios.

Integrating computers in architectural design means to negotiate between centuries-old analog design methods and the new digital systems of production. Analog systems of architectural production use tracing paper, vellum, graphite and ink, clipboard, clay, balsa wood, plastic, metal, etc. Analog systems have also been termed “handmade”, “manual”, “material” or “physical”. Digital systems of architectural production use scanning, image manipulation, visualization, solid modeling, computer aided drafting, animation, rendering, etc. Digital systems have also been called “electronic”, “computer-aided”, “virtual”, etc.The difficulty lies in the underdeveloped state of the necessary methods, techniques, and theories to relate traditional and new media. Recent investigations on the use of multiple iterations between manual and electronic systems to advance architectural work show promising results. However, these experiments have not been sufficiently codified, cross-referenced and third party tested to conform a reliable knowledge base. This paper addresses this shortcoming by bringing together reported experiences from diverse researchers over the past decade. This summary is informed by more than three years of continuous investigation in the impacts of analog-digital conversations in the design process. The goal is to establish a state-of-the-art common foundation that permits instructors, researchers and practitioners to refer to, utilize, test, criticize and develop. An appendix is included providing support for the paper’s arguments.

Interactions avec les médias et processus de design: Établissement d’une base de connaissancesL’intégration des ordinateurs dans le processus de conception architecturale nécessite un dialogue entre les anciennes méthodes analogues, utilisées depuis des siècles, et les méthodes digitales modernes. Les difficultés se situent au niveau de l’état sous-développé des méthodes et théories pour relier les nouvelleset les anciennes techniques. Des recherches récentes sur l’utilisation d’itérations multiples entre systèmes manuels et électroniques pour avancer le travail de l’architecte ont produit de résultats intéressants.Cependant, ces résultats n’ont pas été suffisamment codifiés, référés, et testés pour former une base de connaissances fiable. Ce papier vise à combler ce manque en réunissant des témoignages sur diverses recherches effectuées au cours du décennie dernier. Ce reportage résulte de plus de trois ans d’investigations continuelles concernant l’impact du dialogue analogue-digital sur le processus de la conception architecturale. Le but est d’établir une base commune que les enseignants, les chercheurs et les étudiants peuvent utiliser, vérifier, critiquer et développer d’avantage. Une appendice contient les preuves à l’appui des arguments des auteurs.

The Landscape Architecture program in the educational and research system of Iran is no more than two decades old. As a professional discipline, its theoretical and practical grounds need to be developed to assist in training professionals and localization purposes. Also, training for design, as the core of the pedagogy and practice in landscape architecture, requires the broadening of concepts, procedures, and professional tools. Results of a comparative study of the course description of Design Studio I in the Master of Landscape Architecture program in Iran and that of top-ranked universities all around the world imply that Iranian landscape design programs have a less research-based curriculum. This study seeks to present a theoretical framework for the educational content of landscape design studios with a causal approach to the current courses provided in Iran—with an emphasis on Landscape Design Studio I. The survey consists of comparison of the course descriptions of Landscape Design Studio I in Iranian universities with those of top universities of other countries using random sampling. Also, semi-structural interviews were held with nine tutors of landscape design studios using the contextual survey method. Content analyses of responses demonstrate two general points of view of Iranian tutors: 1. environmental and natural values; and 2. aesthetic and architectural values of open space design. Therefore, educational contents and approaches must be more elaborated by detailed descriptions. After discussions, the proposed framework for the Landscape Design Studio I course description is introduced.

Tasarım stüdyoları ön plana çıkarılarak düşünülen mimarlık eğitimi üzerine ders planından (müfredat) tutun da sözel derslerin ve stüdyoların nasıl verilmesi gerektiğine dair ciltler dolusu yayın vardır. Ben de çeşitli yerlerinden tutarak çok yazı yazdım bu konuda, hatta bir yayında 21.yy’da proje dersimi nasıl verdiğimi Tasarım Yöntemleri ve Yöntembilimi, Mimari Güncellemeler (2014)’de adım adım anlattım. 1980’li yıllardan sonra mimarlık eğitiminin en popüler gündemi öğrenciye bilginin aktarılama biçimi oldu. Bizim eğitimimizde bir yanda didaktik/pedagojik yöntemler vardır ve onun karşısına öz bilince dayalı andragojik yöntemler konur. Bu tuhaf sözcük kimseyi şaşırtmasın. Entel duruyor diye kullandım. Yoksa, İtalyan mimar Giorgio Grassi 1980’lerde Modern mimarinin kökleri sallanırken ve her eski “doğru” sorgulanırken şöyle demişti zaten: “Bir Hoca öğrencide sadece bir bilinç-duyarlılık oluşturabilir; bu bizim okuldan yegâne beklentimizdir.” Yine bir başka yazısında “Artık usta/çırak yöntemiyle eğitim götürülemez, çünkü öğrenci farklı bilgi ve ilgilere sahip, kimi yerde bizden daha çok şey biliyor. Dolayısıyla masa-başı eğitimimiz artık buyurgan olmamalı, argümana dayalı olmalıdır.” Buna büyük ölçüde katılmakla birlikte “bilgelik”e hiç mi yer yok diye sorgulamadan edemiyorum.

Bilgelik kişinin tüm deneyimsel birikiminin eyleme yansıtılmasıdır. Eğitim verdiğiniz toplumun “hikayesi”ni bilmek, bilgi aktaracağınız kesimin aile yapısını tahmin etmek, daha önce aldığı bilgi türü ve yöntemi konusunda fikir sahibi olmak ve son olarak da kısıtlı sürelerde neyin nasıl aktarılması gerektiği konusunda deneyim sahibi olmaktır.

Çünkü COVID 19 Dönemini öğrencilerimin başarılı geçirmesini-ayıptır söylemesi-kendi deneyim ve bilgeliğime bağlıyorum: Bu ülkede çok ayaklanma, çok terör, çok coup d’état (sıkıyönetim) gördüm. Corona’dan çok fazla can aldı bunlar, çok yıkılmış insan bıraktı geride, çok sakat bıraktı. Eğitime 15 gün, bir ay, hatta üç ay ara verildiği oldu yıllar boyunca. İnsanlar dönem kaybetti. Bu yüzden ben asla bütün zaman benimmiş gibi başlamam eğitime. Mutlaka iletişim kurabileceğim bir öğrenci vardır grupta. Prolizden (Beykent’in online eğitim programı) dersin öğrenci listesini bulmasını ve bir “mail list” hazırlamasını isterim ondan. (Bu arada Yaren, Naz, Tarık, Akif, Şeref ve Hatice’ye buradan teşekkürlerimi iletiyorum). Böylece çoktan hazır olan dönem projesi duyurumun gruplara iletilmesini sağlarım. İlk dersimde öğrenci o yarıyıl ne tasarlayacağını bilir. Konunun gelmişini-geçmişini konuşuruz. Bina türü ile deneyimi olan öğrencilerden deneyimlerini aktarmasını ister, dinleriz. İlk ödevleri yer analizleri ve konularında bir örneğin Pause &Clark yöntemine dayalı analizidir. Bu arada onlara mail yoluyla “Precedents in Architecture”, grafik anlatım pdf.leri, ve Rivka Oxman’ın “Issue, Concept, Form” brief analizi tekniğini iletirim. İkinci derste yer görmeye gideriz. Yer görmek derken öyle uğrayıp geçmeyiz. Yaşıma aldırmadan mutlaka onlarla giderim ve orada yaklaşık 6 saat geçiririz. Onlar grafikler çizer, notlar alır, resim çekerler. Ben çay-kahve içer, alışveriş yaparım. Sonra buluşur, tartışırız, tekrar giderler. Bu böyle saatlerce sürer. Bir sonraki derse her türlü maket malzemeleriyle gelmelerini söylerim. Bu eğitimin üçüncü haftasıdır. Yer analizleri, tipoloji analizleri ve mimarın literatürden seçilmiş binayla ilgili özgün analizleri andragojik, yönteme dayalı olmakla birlikte içselleştirme yoluyla edinilmiş, bilgiye dayalıdır. Maketi sınıf içinde ve sınırlı sürede yaptırırım. O, içselleştirilmiş bilgiye dayalı bir kavram modelidir. Maket sınıfta yapılır çünkü başka bir yerde yapılmadığından emin olmalıyım. Öğrencinin yere ve konuya verdiği ilk tepkiyi gözümle görmeliyim.

Bitirme grubunun jürisiyle ilk tanışma/tartışma gününde de bunu istedim. Ne şans ki bu tarihi çok önceden belirlenmiş gün de pandemi kısıtlarından önceye rastladı. Pandemiyle görünmez hale geldiğimizde gerek ARCH 302 gruplarım ve gerekse diploma grubum benimle kavramsal maketlerini paylaşmıştı ve eleştiri almıştı (Resim 1. Diploma grubu maketlerinden bir seçki, Resim 2. ARCH 302 gruplarımdan bir seçki). Bu aşama gerçekleştiğinde benim içim rahatlar; iş bitmiştir.

Design studios play an important role in training future architects and designers, representing a key space for experimentation and creative practice in the education of architecture, landscape architecture and interior architecture students. Unlike other courses, design studios confront students with the concrete practical aspects of the design process, along with the more abstract poetic experiences of designing. This combination of practice with theory introduces students to the concept of creativity and creative design processes. While conceptually exciting, student engagement often comes with feelings of vulnerability and fear of 'exposure' that design practice brings, preventing them from experimentation. This paper explores various experiments designed to foster trust to aid in students' engagement in creative practices within studios. Several assignments follow where techniques are specifically designed to encourage creativity in the context of the architectural design studio. The paper further examines how architectural studio style teaching can foster a way of creating as well as researching through design and can provide a forum for both the sharing of knowledge as well as communication and collaboration between a wide range of stakeholders.

The role of the architect and urban designer is becoming more complex, engaging with economic, social, environmental and  cultural concerns along with politically loaded usergroups, lobbygroups and complex multi-disciplinarily ‘wicked’ problems of large scale city design and densification.
This study poses the questions: How do educators provide urban design studio syllabi that encourage students to engage in such complexity in a meaningful, provocative and propositional way; and how can we encourage students to develop breadth of understanding of real urban issues and their interrelated nature but also allow depth of research into specific areas of urbanism?
The method used to investigate these questions was through a
cross-disciplinary urban design studio case study. The main project brief was to rework current planning documents to produce and test mini 3D Urban Design Frameworks that emphasised one particular aspect of urbanism in a reductio ad absurdum manner using the metaphor of a music recording studio mixing desk, where ‘sliders’ are manipulated to control the intensity and quality of specific instruments (urban design objectives). Students pushed one volume control ‘up to eleven’, prioritising and exaggerating a key aspect of current urban design rhetoric such as: cycle-ability; pedestrian connectivity; heritage preservation; transit oriented development; solar amenity; above all other design issues.
The resulting projects were diverse in their intent and execution and each were full of contradiction, strengths and weaknesses as was expected with such a brief. Students all gained an insight into the intrinsically interlinked nature of urban design as they discovered that by emphasising one design aspect over all overs, they may ‘solve’ one urban problem only to have unintended impacts, positive or negative, on other aspects of urbanism.
