The internationalisation of student cohorts at undergraduate and postgraduate levels poses challenges for students and tutors alike. This case study provides a qualitative analysis of some of the issues surrounding the international student experience of higher education in the UK in a large urban higher education institution, through the use of semi-structured interviews and focus groups. Based on the findings a number of recommendations are made to enable those who come to the UK from other educational backgrounds to adapt and make the transition necessary in order to enhance their experience of studying here. Rationale and Objectives of the Study

This publication intends to increase the success of joint programmes by presenting elements deemed to be good practices. The good practices presented come from assessment reports, the formal outcomes of external quality assurance and accreditation procedures. The good practices that make up the so-called checklist were thus put forward by peers and experts.

This paper reports on the experience of developing a double-degree master’s program in social work between a Russian and a Spanish university. It focuses on the complementarity of the existing training programs in social work and on the handling of cultural and institutional particularities. Developing international master’s degrees programs is a challenge in terms of both adjustments to the curricula and economic viability. A genuine interest in learning from the other country is a sine qua non condition difficult to meet because the traditions of social work and welfare in each county are deeply rooted in that country’s culture and history. The authors explain how they worked to establish a common ground and describe the results they were able to achieve.

Managing undergraduate capstone projects is a specialised task which depends on the nature of programmes, availability of resources, inputs and the expected outcomes. Technology programmes are different from conventional
engineering programmes and hence the training in technology capstone projects should be aligned with the programme objectives and expectations. This paper describes an effective policy framework and administrative process
for managing the capstone projects in typical joint technology degree
programmes in Trinidad and Tobago.Uniqueness of technology capstone
projects and their distinct inputs and expected outcomes are illustrated.
Detailed management process, assessment criteria and the experiences gained
so far are presented. Few technology projects of these programmes under this
framework are briefly described.

This paper introduces a theoretical model for developing integrated degree programmes through e-learning systems as stipulated by a collaboration agreement signed by two universities. We have analysed several collaboration agreements between universities at the national, European, and transatlantic level as well as various e-learning frameworks. A conceptual model, a business model, and the architecture design are presented as part of the theoretical model. The paper presents a way of implementing e-learning systems as a tool to support inter-institutional degree collaborations, from the signing of the collaborative agreement to the implementation of the necessary services. In order to show how the theory can be tested one sample scenario is presented.

How to award a joint degree in such a way that it is recognisable and indeed recognised? When is a joint degree regarded as an official degree in countries outside, but sometimes even inside, the joint programme consortium? How can the design of the joint degree and the Diploma Supplement facilitate access to the labour-market? This publication aims to answer these questions. It provides higher education institutions (and their joint programmes) with examples of good practices. The main aim of these guidelines is to facilitate and improve the full recognition of joint degrees. It intends to do so by clarifying expectations regarding the design and the content of the degree and the Diploma Supplement.

Graduate-level engineering and technology programmes are designed to meet the requirements of the local business, industry, utilities and the general demand. In Trinidad and Tobago, the demand for technologists is high. To meet this demand, two Engineering Technology degree programmes have been established as a joint venture between the regional University of the West Indies (UWI) and the national University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT). This paper presents the highlights of this experience, global perspectives on technologists, a comparison of technology and traditional engineering programmes, professional registration practices and the acceptance of such graduates by the industry.

Academic institutions, colleges and newly established Universities often seek academic alliances with larger, more established Universities to bring value, recognition and acceptance to their programs. This mechnanism also helps to build educational capacity. Partnerships and alliances between Universities and Colleges are leading to the offering of joint degrees. The regional University of the West Indies (UWI), and the newly established national University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT) have partnered to offer two Undergraduate degrees. This paper presents the mechanisms and experiences of administering these joint programs; from conceptualization of the partnership, identification of the training needs and program development to program execution. Mechanisms for Quality Assurance and International Accreditation of the programs are reviewed and a framework for the joint administration of such programs is presented.
