Karel Klostermann

Těžba, či ponechání jedinců smrku ztepilého zasažených gradací lýkožrouta smrkového v národním parku Šumava je předmětem neutuchajících diskusí. Téma Šumavy vytváří kulisu pro podstatnou část disputací na poli ochrany přírody. Převážná část lesnické obce zastává, zjednodušeně řečeno, tento názor: „Na Šumavě rostou uměle vzniklé monokultury smrku, nezřídka pochybné provenience, přičemž přirozeně by se zde na většině území vyskytovaly smíšené lesy. Ony nepůvodní monokultury byly ponechány působení kůrovce, jenž zelené lesy změnil v mrtvé porosty na úkor prospěšných funkcí, ne-li samotné podstaty existence lesa. Správným postupem by přitom byla včasná těžba a asanace větrem vyvrácených či kůrovcem napadených smrků, tak aby se lýkožrout nemohl šířit, se souběžnou přeměnou porostů na les přirozené dřevinné skladby (s jedlí a bukem).“

V prvním článku, který vyšel v minulém čísle časopisu Šumava, jsem představil lesy „Šumavy“, jak je Karel Klostermann zobrazil ve svém nejznámějším šumavském románu Ze světa lesních samot – jako mozaiku lesů nedotčených a lesů jen velmi málo hospodářsky využívaných, která po roce 1870 vzala v důsledku vichřice zcela za své. Tento závěr jsem učinil na základě porovnání popisů „lokálního“ charakteru, tedy takových, které spisovatel vztáhl ke konkrétnímu a jasně vymezenému místu (například „na svahu malého Špicberka bylo narubáno několik set sáhů dříví“) s popisy charakteru „globálního“ (obecného), tedy takovými, které se týkají velkých a nejasně vymezených oblastí (například „Šumavy“).

Karel Klostermann (1848–1923) je všeobecně vnímán jako „spisovatel Šumavy“. K jeho především beletristickým textům se odvolává celá řada dnešních mluvčích, kteří různými způsoby pracují s obrazem takzvané „staré Šumavy“, a to zejména ve vztahu k podobě jejích lesů. Jistě není náhodou, že sám o sobě těžko uchopitelný pojem „stará Šumava“ bývá běžně zastupován pojmem „Klostermannova Šumava“.

V předcházejících dvou článcích, které vyšly v časopise Šumava, jsem představil, jak „spisovatel Šumavy“ Karel Klostermann v románech Ze světa lesních samot, V ráji šumavském a v Črtách ze Šumavy zobrazuje les a jeho vývoj. Postupoval jsem metodou porovnávání map vytvořených na základě takzvaných lokálních popisů, tedy takových, které spisovatel umístil do geograficky jasně vymezené oblasti. Lokální popisy jsem srovnal s popisy, které označuji jako globální. Jedná se o taková líčení, která jasně vymezená nejsou, tedy taková, jež se týkají velkých celků a která ve svém krajním projevu charakterizují celou Šumavu.

This study engages in a critique of the documentary validity of Karel Klostermann’s (1848–1923) “Bohemian Forest” work, particularly with regard to the dominant narrative on the destruction of the “original” Bohemian Forest as a result of the unprecedented windstorm of 1870, which is a prominent motif in contemporary discourse on the Bohemian Forest National Park. By excerpting all the descriptions of the natural environment in the novels Ze světa lesních samot (From the World of Forest Solitude, 1891), V ráji šumavském (The Bohemian Forest Paradise, 1893) and the accompanying Črt ze Šumavy (Bohemian Forest Sketch, 1890) I create maps which are then contrasted to each other. By comparing them with the “overall” (general) descriptions, i.e. those relating to each book’s entire setting, I came to detect some significant discrepancies. I consider one substantial finding to be that although on the basis of general descriptions, Klostermann stated that the “Bohemian Forest” indeed underwent fundamental disruption in autumn 1870, his local descriptions tend more to indicate that there was no significant change in the ratio of “original” and exploited land resulting from the windstorm, the bark beetle outbreak and subsequent woodcropping. Hence the narrative that is traditionally identified with Klostermann’s work primarily arises from an inconsistent interpretation of text associated with the writer’s specific role (which, it should be added, is also partially reflected by him) as a creator of the collective memory for the entire region.

The article deals with the problem of representation of an author Karel Klostermann (1848–1923) and his novels in Czech literary-historical handbooks, editorial prefaces, and encyclopedias. The article exposes the way in which Czech literary historiography works with the myth of Karel Klostermann as a documentarist of the ‘old Bohemian Forest’ (Šumava in Czech). An analysis of the above three distinct text types reveals that Klostermannʼs central topic — an unprecedented windstorm that had terminated the ‘original Bohemian Forest’ — is mostly seen not as a motive but as the fact (as well as in the recent discourse on Bohemian Forest National Park). However, the concepts of ‘monumental and naturally stable forest’ or ‘sudden epochal break’ were paradoxically known only from the novels of Karel Klostermann, who worked with them inconsistently. The article shows that Czech literary historiography does not deal with Klostermann’s fiction critically but rather replicates common stereotypes and dominant narrative about the past of the Bohemian Forest.

This paper deals with a) the role of writer Karel Klostermann (1848-1923) and his work in the protracted debate over approaches to the administration of the Bohemian Forest National Park (BFNP), and b) a description of intertextual relations between three sets of texts: Karel Kloster­ mann's fiction, discourse on Karel Klostermann/the image of Klostermann's fiction, and discourse on the BFNP. The material analysed consists of evidence from an extensive corpus of media texts on the BFNP dated 1991-2010, which use the life and work of Karel Klostermann as part of the argu­ ment data, both as quotations and simple references. This evidence is classified on the basis of the positions of the speakers and the motifs involved. The results of this analysis indicate not only that motifs from the discourse on Karel Klostermann have only to some extent crossed over into the dis­ course on the BFNP, depending in particular on the position of the speaker, but also that new motifs continue to cross over from fiction. However, it also reveals the nature of discourse on the BFNP, which is primarily determined by the dominant narrative of the unnatural character of the large-scale decline of mountain spruce trees.

Karel Klostermann (1848–1923), most of whose fiction is set in the central Bohemian Forest, wrote about the sudden and comprehensive destruction of the original forest ecosystems which had been caused by the unprecedented severe gale of 1870 and then the bark beetle. In an analysis of the picture of the forest formed by two of Klostermann’s novels, Ze světa lesních samot (A world of sylvan solitude, 1891) and V ráji šumavském (The Bohemian Forest paradise, 1893), and by the guide-like Črty ze Šumavy (Bohemian Forest sketches, 1890), the author in this essay demonstrates that Klostermann’s depictions of the environment actually manifest considerable inconsistencies. Klostermann’s general descriptions, for example, regularly conflict with specific descriptions of localities or various interpretations of the cause of the momentous changes. The analysis in this essay also reveals that the story of the death of the ‘old Bohemian Forest’ depends chiefly on the ambiguous use of the term prales (old-growth forest), predominantly in the sense of something that is majestic and ancient, and has been left structurally unchanged for centuries. Through this prism, the decline of the forest, which did in fact take place in large parts of the 1870s, could not have been perceived by the writer other than as an unnatural, fatal phenomenon. By comparing selected passages of these works, the article shows that Klostermann does not in fact provide evidence of the decline of the ‘old Bohemian Forest’. Though he was a good observer, Klostermann’s interpretations of the processes and phenomena of nature cannot reasonably be said to constitute relevant documentation.
