Khurasan

ابوالمظفر علاءالدین عطاملک بن محمد جوینی در سال 622 یا 623 ق در خاندانی دبیرپرور، در آبادی بزرگ آزادوار که تا پیش از هجوم مغولان مرکز ولایت جوین/گویان یا کویان به شمار می¬رفت، متولد شد.  سابقه حرفه دیوانی خاندان او دست کم به دوره سلطان سنجر (حک. 611-652 ق) و محتملاً به نخستین حکومت‌های ایرانی پس از اسلام می‌رسید. اگرچه، نسب عطاملک جوینی در آثار خود او یعنی  تاریخ جهانگشای و تسلیه الاخوان و  و نیز در آثار فارسی دوره ایلخانان نیآمده است، آثار عربی نگارش یافته در سرزمین عراق و شام از جمله تاریخ اسلام ذهبی به نقل از کمال‌الدین عبدالرازق بن احمد بغدادی مشهور به ابن فُوَطی (642-723 ق) مورخ مخصوص عطاملک، الفخری فی آداب السلطانیة اثر ابن طقطقی و نیز در عمده الطالب اثر ابن عِنَبَه ((حدود ۷۴۸- ۸۲۸ ق)، نسب جوینی را به فضل بن ربیع (د.208ق)  وزیر هارون (حک. 170- 193ق) و امین عباسی (حک. 193-198ق) رسانده¬اند.  اما در آثار فارسی، به گفته قزوینی عطاملک جوینی را قاضی نوراللّه شوشتری در مجالس‌المؤمنین  و بالتبع او رضاقلی‌خان هدایت در مجمع الفصحاء، از خاندان امام¬الحرمین جوینی (د. 478ق)، عالم برجسته شافعی و نخستین مدرّس نظامیه نیشابور، دانسته‌اند.  از میان این دو نسب، قزوینی و محققان بعد از او، نظر نویسندگان عرب نویس را پذیرفته و جوینی را از خاندان فضل بن ربیع به شمار آورده اند، لیکن این محققان تحلیلی  در مورد علل صحت این نسب  و ترجیح آن بر نسب موجود در منابع فارسی، ارائه نکرده اند.

The catastrophic Mongol incursions into the heart of the Muslim world during the thirteenth century left a path of death and destruction in their wake. Though the assaults succeeded in vanquishing Baghdad, toppling the Muslim caliph himself, it is notable that the famous contemporary historian, 'Ata-Malik Juwayni, does not describe this as the pinnacle of Mongol conquest. Rather, for this Sunni historian, the zenith and culmination of the Mongol invasion is the obliteration of the tiny rival enclave of the Ismailis, a Shi'i sect centered at the mountain fortress of Alamut. It is to this singular event that Juwayni dedicates the concluding one-third of his History of the World Conqueror. The Mongols sought a complete destruction of Alamut and the extermination of the Ismailis. Many of the Persian historians, led by Juwayni, believed that they were successful in this endeavor. Until recently, the complete extermination of the Ismailis in the face of the Mongol behemoth was also accepted as fact in Western scholarship. In this article it is maintained that Ismaili activity in the region in the aftermath of the Mongol invasions was even greater than previously suspected. Inconsistencies and exaggerations in Juwayni's testimony; a correction of his narrative based on other historians, including Rashid al-Din; and the evidence of regional histories, geographical tomes and inscriptions clearly point to sustained Ismaili presence in the region. This evidence is further supported by the fifteenth-century Nasa'ih-i Shah-rukhi, a hostile Khurasani source that clearly indicates that Alamut was a center of the Ismaili da'wa to which community funds were sent. The testimony of the Nasa'ih is supported by that of the da'wa literature of the Indian subcontinent, which provides very suggestive evidence that the residence of the Imam Islam Shah was Alamut. From this, it becomes clear that the south Caspian region continued, perhaps sporadically, as an important center of the Ismaili community for over a century after the Mongol irruption. The eagle had, so to speak, returned.

Conference report of the ERC Advanced Grant Project, “The Early Islamic Empire at Work – The View from the Regions Toward the Center,”  It has now entered its second phase, looking at the conceptualization and functioning of transregional and regional elites.

This preliminary compilation examines the coinage of Marw after the appearance of the Arabs there in 651. The coins are quite rare, at least so far as is now known. Except for an issue with the false date 20, the coins are dated from 22 to 32. These dates could be interpreted as Yazdagird III regnal dates (= 653-64 CE) or post-Yazdagird dates beginning in the year of his death (= 673-85), or possibly some in the one era and some in the other. More material is needed for further progress. Two copper issues of Marw are also included.

This paper takes up the question of the first use of caliphal titles in the form of individual personal honorifics by al-Mansur and al-Mahdi in 145 H. The circumstances of the decision are analyzed in the light of the numismatic evidence from al-Rayy, where al-Mahdi Muhammad was governor (al-Mansur does not seem to have used his title on coins). The young governor was called al-Mahdi on a coin of Samarqand two years before the events that led to the new official titles. An examination of eastern copper coinage in the first two decades of Abbasid rule, with other literary evidence, suggests that some partisans of the dynasty had for long regarded him as the expected Mahdi of the end of the world.

This powerpoint presentation was delivered at the A.D. Grach memorial conference in St Petersburg on 14th December 2018 and highlights the pioneering status of the Carnegie expedition to Turkestan directed by Raphael Pumpelly in 1904 and how new research on the finds throw new light on Merv and the region of Khurasan as a whole in the early medieval period.

ر بررسی‌های تاریخ هنر کتاب‌آرایی،قرآن معروف به «قرآن بایسنغری» یکی از شاخص‌ترین و بزرگترین نمونه‌های قرآن‌نگاری ایران به حساب می‌آید. در همین زمینه و با وجود پژوهش‌های فراوانی که در خصوص پیشینه، نحوه استنساخ، شناسایی کاتب یا کاتبان احتمالی و سرگذشت این مصحف از عهد تیموری تا امروز انجام شده، پژوهشی جامع درباره مجموعه اوراق و سطور پراکنده باقیمانده از این مصحف (در داخل و خارج از ایران)، به همراه تصاویر و خوانش متن آنها تاکنون منتشر نشده است.

در همین راستا و با هدف شناخت و ارائه فهرستی دقیق از این اوراق و معرفی مجموعه‌هایی که در حال حاضر این آثار در آنها نگهداری می‌گردند، گردآوری اطلاعات این پژوهش را به روش توصیفی -کتابخانه‌ای انجام گرفته و بررسی برخی قطعات از نزدیک توسط نگارنده صورت گرفته است.با توجه به یافت‌های این پژوهش، تعداد اوراق پراکنده قرآن بایسنغری در مجموعه‌های ایران و جهان بیش از تعدادی است که تاکنون از سوی پژوهشگران معرفی و منتشر شده است.  بدیهی است که یافتن قطعات گمشده این مصحف و بررسی‌‌های بیشتر، می‌تواند چشم‌اندازهای تازه‌ای درباره سرگذشت، ویژگی‌های ساختاری و هنری (سبک خوشنویسی) این نسخه منحصربفرد پیش روی پژوهشگران این عرصه قرار دهد.
