Los estudios realizados en Europa, en primer lugar en Escandinava y Austria, muestran que la duración de la vida de las personas con Retraso Mental (RM) ya no es breve. Las causas son: mejor asistencia médica, atención especializada temprana, y condiciones de vida estimulantes. La expectativa de vida de las personas con RM se está prolongando en los países desarrollados. Las personas con RM han ten ido históricamente una vida más corta que la población general. Los efectos biológicos, psicológicos y sociales del envejecimiento pueden aparecer en las personas antes de la edad en que aparecen normalmente en individuos no retrasados. Esto provoca disparidad entre las condiciones para solicitar un servicio y las necesidades individuales.
PROMI continúa planteándose el problema del "encanecimiento" de su población tras más de 25 años de existencia dando trabajo y asistencia a discapacitados, siendo en su mayor proporción personas abandonadas por el sistema o por la familia, y teniendo una dependencia total de complemento afectivo y psicosocial por parte de la Asociación. Nos encontramos que debemos empezar a estructurar servicios para personas con RM ancianas que estén de acuerdo con sus necesidades.

This article presents the steps and main results of an investigation about social protection, labour market and improving of employability of young workers with low qualification, carried out in the region of Madrid during 2005-06. The study focuses on the employment possibilities of young people about 18 to 25 years lacking Degree in Secondary Education. In accordance with objectives, the steps and main results of our study can be summarized in: a) analysis of work market variables influencing the labour integration of young people with low qualification; b) temporary contracts impact on employment and continuous training of these workers; c) exploration of the possibilities open by the new normative on basic and vocational training; d) making a training plan that gathers both the conditions of being based on the market current possibilities and the accreditation of professional competences, influencing also the labour improvement of the studied group; e) to contrast and diffuse results among administration technicians, trainers, employers, union organizations and the youths themselves, as participant sectors in the field work and outstanding ones for the development of improvement proposals. As a more concrete contribution, the study includes five training itineraries, including didactic units and good practice guides integrating theoretical and practice training for the formation, accreditation and labour projection of the studied group.
