Lindos

Ab ca. 300 v. Chr. entstehen im Mittelmeerraum Heiligtümer, die – mittels
aufragender Terrassen auf Fernsicht konzipiert – als ansteigende Sakralräume inszeniert sind. Trotz des großen Effektes auf die Architekturgeschichte bleibt die Genese dieses Bautyps im Unklaren. Dies verwundert, wenn man auf ein berühmtes ägyptisches Bauwerk blickt, das in eben dem Moment zu neuer Bedeutung kam, als in der Ägäis die ersten Terrassenheiligtümer entstanden.

It has often been noted that the Septuagint tries to attenuate the idea that God can be seen directly by humans. Nevertheless, the alternative attitude, to tolerate such statements can also be observed in the same translations. Thus far, explanations for these phenomena have been sought primarily within Jewish literature. The present contribution to this discussion tries to broaden the horizon by taking into account both the diversity of vision reports in the Hellenistic world and the diversity within Second Temple Judaism. It is argued that beholding the Deity in the Hellenistic world is not seen as impossible or a purely metaphysical cognitive act in the Platonic sense, but first of all a priestly privilege in which lay people can participate under certain circumstances.

Hellenistic Lindos was home to a remarkable association of katoikeuntes kai georgeuntes. Through its connections with the local elite the association was gradually integrated into the civic structure of Hellenistic Lindos and eventually achieved a position similar to that of the demes. The identity of the members has long been debated. This study revisits the question and argues that the katoikeuntes kai georgeuntes were foreign merchant agriculturalists with social aspirations.

In ancient Greece textiles were used as votive offerings in temples, but be-cause of their perishable nature they have vanished today. However, their absence does not mean that researchers have no knowledge of them, only that it must be sought elsewhere. The present article deals with secondary sources such as fibulae and dress pins, inscriptions and pictorial representations in order to paint a picture of the use of textiles in the Greek temples. These sources show that textiles were present in many temples in the Greek Mediterranean area, and were used both as costly votive offerings and in rituals such as the dressing of cult statues.

La Chronique de Lindos est un texte gravé sur une stèle découverte en 1909 à Lindos sur l’île de Rhodes, qui recense les offrandes les plus prestigieuses dédiées dans le sanctuaire d’Athéna depuis sa fondation. Suite à un incendie qui ravage le sanctuaire aux alentours de 392-391 avant J.-C., le temple ainsi que les offrandes qu’il contenait sont en effet détruites ou endommagées par le feu. Bien après la reconstruction du sanctuaire, en 99 avant J.-C., la cité de Rhodes promulgue un décret demandant l’établissement d’un inventaire des biens du sanctuaire, ainsi qu’une liste des épiphanies de la divinité.
La liste a été établie par Timachidas (dont le père Haségitimos est à l’origine de la promulgation du décret et de l’érection de la stèle), accompagné d’un second individu resté anonyme. La liste des offrandes autrefois conservées dans le sanctuaire, avant l’incendie du début du IVe siècle avant J.-C., est établie grâce à l’usage de différentes sources écrites à disposition des chroniqueurs, qui ont ensuite été ordonnées de manière à ce que les offrandes semblent classées par ordre chronologique de dépôt. Elles sont réparties en trois colonnes, qui correspondent en réalité à trois phases de l’histoire du sanctuaire : la première recense des artéfacts évoquant des figures mythiques liées à l’île et plus particulièrement au sanctuaire ; la deuxième dénombre les objets d’époque archaïque ; alors que la dernière mentionne les offrandes postérieures à l’incendie du temple et donc probablement encore visibles dans le sanctuaire au moment de l’érection de la stèle.
L’étude de cette inscription et de son organisation permet de comprendre comment elle a été établie et structurée, mettant ainsi en lumière la façon dont la communauté rhodienne a utilisé les archives de la cité pour dresser une liste d’anciennes offrandes disparues ou endommagées, afin de mettre en valeur l’ancienneté du sanctuaire. Cela montre combien la mémoire était un facteur essentiel à l’élaboration et à l’importance du culte rendu à la divinité ainsi qu’au rayonnement du sanctuaire, et comment elle prenait appui sur des vestiges réels (les fouilles du sanctuaire d’Athéna Lindos ont permis la mise au jour de plusieurs artéfacts plus anciens que les premières traces de fréquentation rituelles avérées), ou encore fantasmés, des hommes du passé. Nous verrons également comment l’enquête commanditée par la cité-État a servi les intérêts sociaux et politiques de Rhodes durant la fin de la période hellénistique, où l’île est considérée comme l’une des puissances politiques, économiques mais aussi intellectuelles et culturelles parmi les plus importantes de Méditerranée orientale.

The project of redesigning and enhancing the archaeological site of the Lindos Acropolis began in 2001, within the context of the restoration works of the monuments carried out by the Hellenic Ministry of Culture and Tourism. The most important problems that had to be confronted concerned the visitors pathways through the monument (up to 2500 visitors daily), and the existing difficulty in identifying smaller monuments, like anathimata (offerings to the gods) and inscriptions found scattered all around the place since the time of the excavations.
What became a necessity in order to implement the study was the composition of an accurate designing site plan and the recording of every scattered stone findings (about 2000). This recording enabled the identification of 421 inscribed stones with the list produced by the archaeologists who had excavated the site and also the location and association of more than 113 unpublished sections with architectural and votive monuments of the site.
The goals of the redesigning and enhancing project were the following:
- To optimize the routes the visitors followed and help them recognize the monuments of the site by following specific pathways.
- T o protect and promote the smaller monuments of the archaeological site.
- To protect and highlight the scattered material by classifying it.
The study has been approved by the Hellenic Central Archeological Council (KAS) in 2006 and realized during the period of 2006-2009.
Il progetto di sistemazione d’area e valorizzazione del sito archeologico dell’acropoli Lindos è iniziato nel 2001, nell’ambito del progetto generale di restauro dei monumenti condotto dal Ministero della Cultura e Turismo di Grecia. Tra i problemi più importanti da affrontare è stato quello della definizione dei percorsi attraverso la zona archeologica per i visitatori (più di 2500 presenze giornaliere), e la difficoltà oggettiva di identificare i piccoli monumenti, come gli ex-voto offerti alle divinità, e le iscrizioni, all’epoca degli scavi rinvenute sparse in tutta l’area.
Tra le priorità è stato quindi l’approfondimento di uno studio progettuale che potesse pervenire ad una accurata sistemazione d’area, previa catalogazio-ne di tutti gli elementi litici pertinenti all’arredo santuariale (circa 2000). Quest’ultima attività ha condotto all’identificazione di 421 delle iscrizioni segnalate al tempo degli scavi e anche alla localizzazione e associazione di più di 113 monumenti votivi e architettonici inediti.
Le finalità del progetto di valorizzazione sono state quindi le seguenti:
- Ottimizzazione dei percorsi seguiti dai visitatori , organizzati in modo da facilitare durante la visita il riconoscimento dei diversi monumenti.
- La protezione e la valorizzazione dei monumenti minori presenti nell’area santuariale.
- La protezione dei materiali sparsi e la loro identificazione mediante catalogazione.
Il progetto, approvato dal Consiglio Archeologico Centrale (KAS) del Ministero della Cultura, è stato realizzato nel periodo 2006-2009.

Archokrateion is located at the western section of Lindos, in the region of Kampana, at the edge of a cliff called Krana. It is one of the largest rock–cut funerary monuments of the Hellenistic period, belonging to the type of false façade tombs, and dates to the last quarter of the 3rd century BC. According to inscriptions found on the site, it was commissioned by Archokrates, member of a prominent family of Lindos and the priest of Athena at 225 BC.

Το Αρχοκράτειον βρίσκεται στην δυτική πλευρά της Λίνδου, στην πλαγιά του υψώματος Κράνα, σε μικρή απόσταση από την πλατεία του οικισμού. Ανήκει σε μια πολύ διαδεδομένη τυπολογία λαξευμένου ταφικού μνημείου με ψευδοπρόσοψη, η οποία εμφανίζεται στη Ρόδο κατά τους ελληνιστικούς χρόνους.  Σύμφωνα με τις επιγραφές των επιτάφιων βωμών, χρονολογείται στο τελευταίο τέταρτο του 3ου αι. π.Χ. και αποδίδεται στον Αρχοκράτη, μέλος επιφανούς λινδιακής οικογένειας, ο οποίος χρημάτισε ιερέας της Αθηνάς Λινδίας το 225 π.Χ.
