This study aimed to analyze the effects of the functional strength training (FST) on body composition of physically inactive women. Twenty women aged between 19 and 34 years old (25.70 ± 4.20 yr.) were randomly assigned to experimental (EG, n = 10) and control group (CG, n = 10). The EG performed 12 weeks of FST, while CG did not receive any intervention. The anthropometric variables evaluated in both groups were: body mass (BM), height, body mass index (BMI), absolute fat mass (AFM), lean body mass (LBM) and fat percent (%F). The paired and independent samples t tests were used to identify modifications between and within experimental and control groups (p < .05). The EG decreased %F values (p < .001), while CG increased the LBM (p < .001), BMI (p < .001) and BM (p = .021). Results showed that after 12 weeks FST can be useful to reduce body fat mass, but it doesn’t promote increases on LBM of physically inactive women.

The purpose of this study was to compare the perception of the burnout syndrome related to the variables gender, sport, and age in young swimmers and volleyball players. A total of 194 athletes of both genders, aged 14 to 17 years, completed the Athlete Burnout Questionnaire (ABQ). The data analysis consisted of descriptive statistics and a comparison of the studied variables using the Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests. The results showed that the athletes did not have high burnout syndrome indicators. We found no effect of the gender variable on the perception of burnout dimensions. Swimmers had greater physical and emotional exhaustion than their volleyball peers. Conversely, volleyball players perceived more sport devaluation than their swimming peers.

The virtual reality has been frequently required in rehabilitation settings. However, it still lacks specificity, making it necessary to establish specific criteria to classify the most relevant aspects of electronic games to allow interventions based on virtual reality. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to develop a “Perceptual and motor demands assessment protocol for virtual reality systems” and to investigate its content validity and intra and inter observer agreement. The protocol was created through a literature review including classical studies as well as a review of recent articles about motor behavior, physical training, cognitive neuroscience and virtual reality. The previous versions were presented in study group meetings and congresses, and modified accordingly to suggestions of experts. Three examiners used the final version to analyze twice the total of 20 videos of individuals in a virtual environment and answered a questionnaire about its content validity. Mos...

The influence of physical activity in children’s development of executive function is not yet consensus among previous studies. So this study aims to evaluate the effects of school based motor stimulation in cognitive function responses in children aged 6 to 10 years of public schools at Brasilia-Federal District, Brazil. It was formed two groups control (n = 40) and experimental (n = 40) who were studied before and after the intervention. The variable analyzed was: motor skills, executive function, reaction time and selective attention. The intervention occurred during 7 months, two times week, in a 50 minutes physical education classes. The results showed that there was a significant difference between groups in tests of executive function [F (1, 118) = 13.768, p = .001], reaction time [F (1, 118) = 18.352, p = .001] and attention selective [F (1, 64) = 14.531, p = .001]. Thus, it was observed that the experimental group improved not only its motor performance, but also significan...

The aims of this study were: to verify the relationship (1) and dependency (2) between body fat (BF), fat free mass (FFM) and the arm muscle area (AMA) with athletic performance of wheelchair basketball players. Twenty-two subjects were evaluated according to the following order, in 24-hour intervals: a) anthropometric measurements and the Wingate anaerobic test (day 1); b) assessment of VO2peak and threshold (2); and c) specific tests (3). The results showed satisfactory relationships of AMA with handgrip left (r=.36; p=.08), VO2peak (r=.59; p=.03), medicine ball throwing (r=.54; p=.00), absolute (r=.61; p=.00) and relative anaerobic power (r=.67; p=.00). BF with handgrip left (r= .43; p=.03), medicine ball throwing (r=.50; p=.01), absolute (r=.77; p=.00) and relative (r=.82; p=.00) anaerobic power. And FFM with handgrip (r=.44; p=.03), medicine ball throwing (r=.43; p=.03), absolute (r=.64; p=.00) and relative (r=.69; p= .00) anaerobic power. The regression analyses revealed that ...

Drug addiction is one of the greatest flagellum of our days. The purpose of this review study was to develop reflection and a critical spirit on the issues associated with the use of substances and arouse interest for a preventative action and intervention of family and community. It is the result of an exhaustive analysis and study of scientific literature on the issues associated with the abuse, prevention and treatment of substance use. As main conclusions, we think it is essential to implement preventive strategies, allowing parents and educators take a proactive and educational attitude for the substance use. We consider that it is not easy for parents to be active agents for the prevention of drug abuse, however we believe that with this perception and learning they can provide support in a fight in which only the enlightened persistence and a clear desire from the heart, may overcome. Keywords: drug abuse, primary prevention, drug, substances
