Introduction: The Pilates exercise can be an improvement in the quality of life of its practitioners, through an optimized condition of improvements in posture, developing greater mobility, balance, agility and functionality. The satisfaction with life is part of a cognitive dimension in this quality of life and it is present in most measures of well-being. Problem Statement and Approach: The main purpose of this study is to analyse and relate the effects of a supervised program of Pilates classes in a group of elderly, comparing the results of balance through the Berg scale and their ability by the Leighton scale, and relate these improvements with the satisfaction with life of these elderly in this activity. Material and Methods:The evaluation assessments of the elderly were carried out in the proper room, using a goniometer and the Berg scale for articular measurements, the Leighton scale for the balance domain and the life satisfaction scale. The study had 72 participants, 52 wo...

Introduction: During childhood and adolescence, obesity is an important predictor of adulthood obesity. Therefore, there should be given an important care to young population to improve the future of our society. To compare the effects of ten-week multicomponent exercise training with different exercise frequencies on body composition (BC) and physical fitness (PF) in overweight and obese young children. Material and Methods: 40 children, aged 12-15 (14.77 ± 1.49), were randomly selected and assigned to two experimental groups to train 3 times per week (EG1) or twice a week (EG2) for 10 weeks: EG1 (n=10), EG2 (n= 10) groups and a CG group (n= 20; no training program). Results: It was shown that experimental groups (EG1 and EG2) increased aerobic capacity, muscular strength and flexibility from pre- to post-training. The highest gains on muscular strength were observed in experimental group that performed twice a week; but better improvements on flexibility, body mass index (BMI) and...

The present study aims to develop the understanding of technical-tactical situations for an effective development of the game, in this case, Hockey. Through the comparison between two situations of game: the formal game and game in (Mini-Hockey) in the “under 8” and “under 10” levels. Our objective is to verify if the reduction of field dimensions in these levels of formation, promotes a greater action in technical-tactical terms by these players, achieving a better understanding of the game. The method used was video recording of nine hockey games, five regular games and four mini-hockey games, and the data regarding of passes, shots and number of goals were recorded. We used statistical software SPSS version 20.0 where descriptive statistics, means and standard deviations, as well as non-parametric Wilcoxon and Mann-Whitney U test were used. The significance level was set at p ≤ 0.05, which allowed us to verify if there is statistical significance between the variables analyzed. I...

The intention of this book is the beginning of an instrument with properties of a practice guide for intervention in DMD. The goal of hydrotherapy in a heated pool is a feature that has been growing and begins to be accepted as an option in reducing disability for muscular dystrophies. Due to the physical properties of water, the voluntary movement and adoption of various postures can be facilitated and muscle stretching exercises and mobilization of articulations can be accomplished with pain relief. Hydrotherapy held on therapy pool is used to maintain muscle strength, respiratory capacity, the range of motion and prevent muscle shortening. Moreover, the freedom of movement provides enjoyment and satisfaction because patients are able to perform activities that may not be possible in another context, except water enviroment. IntroductionMuscular dystrophies comprise a group of inherited diseases that are characterized by their nature of serious commitment, and progressive irreversible of the muscles. The Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy is the most common type among dystrophies that occurs in childhood by presenting their first symptoms between 3 and 4 years old. It evolves in a progressive way leading to muscular weakness, functional limitations, deformities; it reaches heart muscles and diminishes the respiratory vital capacity. This disease is characterized by the absence or deficiency of the production of the dystrophic protein of the muscle cell membrane, thus invalidating the normal functioning of the muscle. The presence of the scoliosis is frequent which constitutes an aggravating factor and subsequent thoracic deformities. Many can maintain independent walking up to 6 or 7 years old, but most will not live to adulthood, since they die due to chronic alveolar hypoventilation and/or aggressive chronic...

Introduction: The purpose of this study was to analyze secular trends in anthropometrics and physical fitness of Portuguese children.Material and Methods: A group of 1819 students (881 boys and 938 girls) between 10 and 11 years old was assessed in their 5th and 6th scholar grade throughout a 20 years’ time-frame. ANCOVA models were used to analyze variations in anthropometrics (height, weight and body mass index) and physical fitness (sit and reach, curl-up, horizontal jump and sprint time) across four quinquennials (1993 - 1998; 1998 - 2003; 2003 - 2008; 2008 - 2013).Results: Secular trends showed the presence of heavier boys and girls with higher body mass index in the 5th and 6th grade throughout the last 20 years. There was also a presence of taller girls but just until the 3rd quinquennial. Both boys and girls were able to perform better on the core strength test and sprint time but become less flexible over the years. Mean jumping performance remained unchanged for both gende...

A child with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) faces a childhood and adolescence with a disability that develops gradually. This book intends to expose the problems of children with DMD. The authors discuss situations related to the disease in an attempt to provide some quality and improvement of life for those affected since DMD is a degenerative disease which affects muscle. This book offers a historical study of muscular dystrophy. It also shows some profiles of excellent clinicians and scientists that have contributed to this book with a description of muscular dystrophy from the clinical picture, to the latest techniques in genetics. Also included in the chapters are resolutions of several approaches to DMD, like scales, in order to anticipate how to manage the disease. This book relates some techniques of moderate exercise, like Yoga and water exercises, that are compliable with some advantages in mobility. The book concludes with some current trends and what can be done in th...

This study aimed to examine the prospective relationship of baseline body mass index (BMI) and performance in a cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) field test with a change in BMI (DeltaBMI) over a 2-year period in a sample of rural children from elementary school in Fundão, Portugal. Obesity status was obtained by the age- and sex-specific BMI cut-off points and CRF by a 9-minute run test. BMI stratification at baseline showed that overweight/obese children were over 11 times (OR=11.31; p=0.007) more likely to be DeltaBMI gainers than their normal weight peers. Those who were classified as unfit were 3.9 times more likely to be DeltaBMI gainers than those classified as fit at baseline. Both BMI at time 1 and CRF change (DeltaCRF) were not significantly associated with DeltaBMI over time. The findings of this study suggest that children who have higher BMI and lower CRF are likely to have greater BMI gain over time.

The aim of this study was twofold (1), to examine the prospective relationship of baseline TV viewing with BMI and CRF both at baseline and over a 2-year period, and (2) to examine the prospective relationship of baseline TV viewing and changes (Delta) on BMI and CRF over a 2-year period. Data were collected in a sample of 135 (64 girls) rural children ages 7 yr-old from elementary schools in Fundão, Portugal. Obesity status was obtained by the age-sex specific BMI cut points and CRF by a 9 min run test. TV viewing was also analyzed and children were assigned as one of two groups: the low TV watching (LTV), and high TV watching (HTV), users based upon them reported to spend less or more than 2 h/day watching TV, respectively. Logistic regression showed that those who were assigned to HTV group were 2.4 times (OR= 2.48; p = .04) more likely to be classified as unfit at time 1. Further the data showed that the LTV were more likely (OR= 0.36; p = .02) to be classified in high DeltaCRF ...

To investigate the effects of two different strength-training programs with the same workload (impulse) on throwing velocity in water polo, 30 water polo players ( M age = 17.1 yr., SD = 4.9; M mass = 71.2 kg, SD = 14.7; M height =1.75 m, SD = 0.09 m) were randomly divided in two groups based upon throwing performance with water polo ball. The medicine-ball training group performed 3 × 6 reps with a 3-kg medicine ball, while the combination training group completed 1 × 9 repetitions with the 3-kg medicine ball, followed by 3 × 14 repetitions with a water polo ball. Both groups trained eight weeks twice per week in addition to their regular water polo training. Throwing velocity was measured with a Doppler radar gun before and after the training period. Testing included throws with a water polo ball on land and in water, as well as with 1-kg and 3-kg medicine balls on land. Statistically significant increases were found in mean peak throwing velocity with the water polo, 1-kg, and 3-...
