Die Quintilier sind zweifellos die berühmteste und am besten dokumentierte Familie aus Alexandria Troas. Insbesondere die letzten vier Generationen haben durch ihre Tätigkeit in der römischen Reichsverwaltung, ihre engen Verbindungen zu den Kaisern und Geistesgrößen ihrer Zeit, ihr literarisches Wirken sowie ihren ausgedehnten Villenbesitz mannigfaltige Spuren hinterlassen. Eine willkommene Bereicherung fand unser Quellenmaterial vor Kurzem durch drei neue Inschriften vom alexandrinischen Forum, die 2008 und 2016 von E. Schwertheim veröffentlicht wurden und Auskunft über zwei frühe, zuvor unbekannte Quintilier geben sowie einen nicht näher zu greifenden Κυιντίλ[ιος] der hohen Kaiserzeit nennen. +++ Damit sind inzwischen acht Familienmitglieder sicher bekannt: ein P. Quintilius Maximus und seine Tochter Quintilia Apphia in iulisch-claudischer Zeit, ein Sex. Quintilius Valerius Maximus und sein gleichnamiger Sohn in der Zeit von den Flaviern bis Hadrian sowie die beiden nachfolgenden und bekanntesten Generationen mit jeweils einem Sex. Quintilius Valerius Maximus und einem Sex. Quintilius Condianus in der Antoninenzeit. Hinzu kommt der Vater des ältesten Sex. Quintilius Valerius Maximus, von dem aber leider nur sein Vorname Sextus überliefert ist. +++ Die epigraphischen Neufunde nahm ich zum Anlass, die Familiengeschichte erneut aufzurollen und erstmals einen ausführlichen Gesamtüberblick in deutscher Sprache vorzulegen. Der bislang ungeklärten Frage nach der origo der Quintilier widmet sich der erste Abschnitt, der zwar keine eindeutige Antwort zu liefern vermag, aber zumindest drei mögliche Szenarien aufzeigt und diese hinsichtlich ihrer Plausibilität überprüft. Die nachfolgenden Ausführungen orientieren sich an der chronologischen Abfolge, wobei der fünfte Abschnitt auch eine Darstellung zum reichen Familienbesitz enthält. Die Schlussbemerkung richtet ihren Blick schließlich auf das Verhältnis zwischen den Quintiliern und ihrer langjährigen Heimatgemeinde Alexandria Troas.

This paper starts with a die-study (19 coins instead of the 7 previously known, among which 3 overstruck) of the coinage with the name TERSIKON and the aramaci legend 'Cilicia' which is generally given to Pharnabazos at Tarsus. We then discuss the full coinage attributed to Pharnabazos and Datames/Tarkumuwa putting their volumes into perspective with the Hecatomnid coinages of Mausolos and Idrieus. The core of the paper is about the many countermarks found on Cilican as well as on Pamphylian staters of the beginning of the 4th c. BCE. We give a long list of 287 specimens detailing for each which kind of countermark(s) and on which isssue of which mint (Selge, Aspendos, Side, Nagidos, Kelenderis, Holmoi, Soloi, Tarsus, Mallos, Issos and even Lapethos on Cyprus). Since it is likely that each of these countermarks was applied at the same time and place, each could be taken as the equivalent of a virtual hoard, giving precious information about what then circulated. The countermak with a bull has been struck on coins from 11 different mints. Accepted chronologies must be adapted to this crucial evidence Many issues dated ca. 350 BCE have in fact been produced before 370 BCE. Many countermarked coins are die-linked prompting the idea that countermaks were applied soon after strike. It turns put that the 4 overstrikes we do have for the coinage of Pharnabazos and Tarkumuwa are all on the same obverse die (out of more than 600). And the four coins have been cointermarked with the bull to r. It is also likely that several coinagesq were produced at the same place.

Mallos is a well-known ancient city in east Cilicia but, in the absence of any visible ruins, the question of its exact location has been troubling historians and archaeologist for centuries. The information by ancient writers like Strabo, Pomponius Mela and Arrian provide is helpful but not enough to pinpoint its exact location. The site of the ancient settlement must have been buried by the notorious silt the river Pyramos has carried for centuries. This presentation includes the numismatic evidence to its probable location and cultural legacy of Mallos.

Mallus became a Roman colony during the rule of Severus Alexander. After the foundation, the largest emissions of coins presented a multifigural scene. The emperor is standing in the middle, offering a small statue of Marsyas (symbol of liberty) to Tyche who is the city goddess. The emperor is crowned by Amphilochus – the mythic founder of Mallus. A pair of oxen located in front of the emperor signifies the colonial foundation. The composition of local deities (Amphilochus, Tyche) with a typical colonial motive (yoke of oxen) and the Roman emperor indicates a high level of cultural integration. In this paper I will examine these components and reconsider the meaning of the scene as well as the identity manifested on the coins of Mallus.
