THE CULT OF DIONYSOS IN ASIA MINOR
IN THE ROMAN IMPERIAL AGE

Making his presence, which can be traced long before the Archaic Age, deeply felt mainly in Hellas, Asia Minor and then in Rome throughout the ancient world, Dionysos, depending on the place and time, appears before us sometimes as a god of grape-wine, sometimes as a god of theatre and acting arts and sometimes as a religious power shaped according to the local needs, however, he has generally been a god of nature representing the fertility and abundance. According to the inscriptions, Dionysos was mentioned with many epithetons in Asia Minor of the Roman Imperial Age, and that he was a god of nature bringing abundance-fertility and his many other features can be observed by these epithetons. Depending on the long stated customs, the cult of Dionysos in Asia Minor survived throughout the Roman Imperial Age (especially in the II-III. Century A.D. with festivals, cult associations and structuring, artists (musicians, players, dancers) that served his cult. According to the written records, festivals such as Dionysia, Lēnaia, Anthestēria, Trietēris organized in the name of Dionysos were celebrated. Dance, music and play competitions were made in these festivals maintained by the rich citizens or directors and not commonly known cult rituals were performed. Besides the associations of synodos artists called by different names in different times in the large cities of the west, cult associations broad in scope such as thiasos, speira or cult member groups with large audience in various names were active both in worshipping and these festivals. In order to achieve this, undoubtedly, both artist associations and cult associations had to have a well organized governing structure. Names were given to the cult members according to the task taken. These members also had to pay a membership fee in order to be a member or to continue to be one. Actually, these fees were as important as the epimeletes in the mainta-nance of these associations. In addition, they were supported both mate-rially and spiritually by the Roman emperors or provincial governors. Although the paganic religious activities in the lands of Asia Minor under the control of Rome were left to the free will of the cities, they would not be strong without the respect shown for the cults of the emperors, emperor and the Roman goddess (Dea Roma). The worshipping of Dionysos could only develop with the close relations with the emperors and the Roman Empire. Correspondingly, supporting a paganic cult significant for the people, the Roman Empire gained the sympathy of the people and also kept them loyal to Rome. The deification of the Roman emperors began with General Marcus Antonius, who was wellcomed as “New Dionysos” on his arrival to Ephesos, and continued in the Roman Imperial Age. During this period the associations in Anazarbos, Ankyra, Ephesos, Teōs, Aphrodisias and Sardeis characterised Emperor Hadrianus, Commodus and Caracalla by this epitheton. Thus, they deified them by considering them equal with Dionysos. Dionysos also had common worship with imperial or Dea Roma cult besides the common paganic worship of Zeus and Dēmētēr. Like all other paganic religions, the cult of Dionysos broke down with the strengthening Christianity with which it had opposite doctrines and finally with the acceptance of Christianity as the official religion of the state. However, many features of the Dionysos cult continued to exist in Asia Minor both in Christian features and local cultures and traditions. Today it still continues this effect.

Arkaik Çağ’dan çok daha eskilere götürebildiğimiz varlığını, coğrafi olarak başta Hellas, Küçükasya ve sonraları Roma olmak üzere tüm Antik Çağ coğrafyasında etkin bir şekilde hissettiren Dionysos, yer ve zaman farkına bağlı olarak, bazı yerlerde üzüm-şarap tanrısı, bazılarında tiyatro ve sahne sanatlarının tanrısı, bazılarında ise yerel ihtiyaçlar doğrultusunda şekillendirilmiş dinsel bir güç olarak karşımıza çıkmıştır. Ama genel olarak bereket ve bolluğu temsil eden bir doğa tanrısı kimliğine sahip olmuştur. Yazıtlardan anlaşıldığına göre Roma İmparatorluk Çağı Küçükasyası’ nda birçok epitheton ile anılan Dionysos’un, bolluk-bereket getiren bir doğa tanrısı olduğu ve diğer başka özellikleri gene bu epitheton’larından anlaşılmaktadır. Küçükasya’daki Dionysos kültü Roma İmparatorluk Çağı boyunca (bilhassa M.S. II-III. yüzyılarda), öncesinden gelen bir geleneğe bağlı olarak şenlikleri, kült dernekleri ve yapılanması, kültüne hizmet eden sanatçıları (müzisyenler, oyuncular, dansçılar) ile varlığını sürdürmüştür. Yazılı belgelerden bu dönemde büyük ve zengin kentlerde hâlâ Dionysia, Lēnaia, Anthestēria, Trietēris gibi Dionysos adına tertiplenen şenliklerin kutlandığını; masrafları, epimeletes olarak bildiğimiz kentin zengin vatandaşları ya da yöneticileri tarafından karşılanan bu şenliklerde külte ilişkin dans, müzik ve oyun yarışmaların yapıldığını ve herkesçe bilinmeyen kült ritüellerinin uygulandığını öğrenmekteyiz. Bilhassa batı kesimlerdeki büyük kentlerdeki, farklı dönemlerde farklı isimlerle anılan synodos sanatçı derneklerinin yanında thiasos, speira gibi daha geniş kapsamlı kült dernekleri ya da en yaygını mystai olan çeşitli adlar altında toplanan geniş kitleli kült üye grupları hem tapınımda, hem de bu şenliklerde aktif olmuşlardır. Şüphesiz ki bunu gerçekleştirebilmek adına gerek sanatçı dernekleri gerekse kült dernekleri, iyi organize olmuş bir idari yapılanmaya sahip olmak durumundaydı. Bu derneklerde üstlendikleri görevlere göre adlandırılan kült üyelerinin, üye olabilmeleri veya üyeliklerini sürdü-rebilmeleri için ödemek zorunda oldukları aidatlar da vardı. Esasen bu derneklerin finansmanının karşılanmasında bu aidatlar, en az epimeletes’ ler kadar önemliydi. Ayrıca Roma imparatorlarının ya da eyalet yöneticilerinin hem manevi hem de maddi desteğini alıyorlardı. Zira bu dönemde Roma egemenliği altında bulunan Küçükasya topraklarındaki pagan dinsel yaşam her ne kadar kentlerin özgür iradesine bırakılmışsa da, imparatorlara, imparator ve Roma Tanrıçası (Dea Roma) kültüne gösterilen saygı olmaksızın güçlü kalamazdı. Küçükasya Dionysos tapınımı da, tamamıyla imparatorlar ve Roma İmparatorluğu ile kurulan güçlü bağlar sayesinde gelişebilmiştir. Bununla paralel olarak da Roma İmparatorluğu, halk için önemli olan pagan bir kültü destekleyerek, hem halkın sempatisini kazanmakta, hem de böylece onların Roma’ya olan bağlılığını sürdürmek amacını gütmekteydi. General Marcus Antonius’un Ephesos’a gelişinde “Yeni Dionysos” olarak karşılanmasıyla başlayan Romalı devlet adamlarını tanrılaştırma geleneği, Roma İmparatorluk Çağı’nda da sürmüş; bu dönemde özellikle Anazarbos, Ankyra, Ephesos, Teōs, Aphrodisias ve Sardeis’teki dernekler, İmparator Hadrianus, Commodus ve Caracalla’yı bu sıfatla nitelendirmişler, böylece onları Dionysos ile bir tutarak tanrılaştırmışlardır. İmparatorluk veya Dea Roma kültü ile ortak tapınımı da görülen Dionysos’un Zeus ve Dēmētēr gibi pagan tanrı-tanrıçalarla da ortak tapınımı söz konusudur. Diğer pagan dinler gibi Dionysos kültünün yıkımı da, öğretilerinin birbirine tamamen ters düştüğü Hıristiyanlık dininin güçlenmesiyle ve nihayetinde M.S. 391’de imparatorluğun resmî dini olmasıyla gerçekleşmiştir. Ancak Dionysos kültünün birçok unsuru, Küçükasya topraklarında, gerek Hıristiyanlık unsurlarında gerekse halk kültür ve geleneklerinde yaşamaya devam etmiştir. Bugün de bu etkisini göstermeye devam etmektedir."

On the basis of archaeological, numismatic, and (mainly) epigraphic attestations, B.Öztürk,Roma imparatorluk çağı Küçükasaysı’nda Dionysos kültü (Istanbul 2010), studies the cult ofΔιόνυσος in Roman Asia Minor. After general remarks about the god, he presents a geographically arranged catalogue of the relevant inscriptions with brief comments (ph. of some texts). On 196-209, Ö. provides a register with explanations of the most important terms found in the inscriptions, and on 210/211 a list of epithets.

Yüzyıl Sonu – 20. Yüzyıl Başına tarihlendirilebilecek yapı; yan sofalı / koridorlu - eyvanlı plan şemasında zemin + 2 oturma katı + cihannümadan oluşur.

Oturma katlarında yapıyı kuzey yönden boydan boya geçen bir koridor ya da yan sofa, dikey sirkülasyonu sağlayan merdivenlerin açıldığı eyvan ile birlikte mekanları birbirine bağlayan ana bölümdür. Yapının plan tipinin teşekkülünde parsel ölçüsü ve yan parsellerdeki yapılaşmanın getirdiği zorunlulukların belirleyici olduğu anlaşılmaktadır. Üç yandan kapalı olan parselde iç ya da orta sofalı bir konut oluşturmak ancak sofanın iki yanına birer adet oda yerleştirmek ile mümkündür ki genel plan anlayışı da bu biçemde şekillenir. Yapının batı bölümünde oluşturulan iki oda, en uçtaki odaya ulaşımın çözümlenmesi açısından yan sofa ya da koridoru zorunlu kılmış; ortaya klasik tipoloji dışında bir plan şeması çıkarmıştır.

Yapının ana inşa malzemesi ahşap ve tuğladır. Zemin katta yığma tuğla, üst katlarda ise ahşap çatkılı tuğla dolgu duvarlar uygulanmıştır.

Oldukça yalın ele alınmış yapıda çıkma payandalarında pendantlar, saçak silmesinde yazılar, cephelerde kat silmeleri ve pencere çerçevelerinden oluşan geometrik süsleme unsurları görülür.

This paper focuses on a Late Bronze Age ―kohl box‖ from Tepebağ Höyük (Plain Cilicia, Turkey), one of the few well-dateable and securely-stratified examples of peculiar cosmetic containers found generally between Egypt and the northern Levant. To date, this category of artefacts has received scant scientific attention, partly because most known specimens come from museum collections or poorly-stratified contexts. The ―kohl box‖ from Tepebağ Höyük is notable not only because it is well-dated (15th-3th centuries BCE), but also because it is the earliest known example from Anatolia. The piece under study is a rectangular basalt object decorated with zoomorphic motifs and characterised by long narrow tubes containing residues of a black pigment. Morphological and chemical composition analyses with Scanning Electron Microscopy-Energy Dispersive Spectrometry (SEM-EDS) carried out on the residues reveal high concentrations of lead sulphide. This is an unpublished master's thesis in Turkish language at the Dokuz Eylül University, submitted by Olcay Kılınç in 2012. It focuses on Roman statues at the Archaeological Museum of Adana in Cilicia (southern Turkey) which is one of the oldest museum of Turkey.
The Archaeological Museum of Adana was first established at the Police Department building just after the formation of the Turkish Republic in 1924. It initially started with the collection of the columns, column capitals and sarcophagi found in the vicinity of the building. Alyanakzade Halil Kamil Bey from Adana was appointed as the museum director and with his successful work, the accumulated material was moved in 1928 to the madrasah section of the no longer existing Cafer Pasha Mosque and then opened to the public. The museum was moved to the building presently occupied by the Ethnographic Museum at Kuruköprü (former Greek church) in 1950. In the 1950s the Regional Museum of Adana was the only museum of the region with material obtained either through purchases or court decisions from a large area reaching from Kahramanmaraş and Gaziantep to Anamur and Alanya, the museum moved to its next premises in January 1972. In 2017 a new building was opened and all the collection moved to this new and larger building.
The catalogue of Roman statues at the Archaeological Museum of Adana features 43 pieces of, mostly life-size, statues. As a result of our studies the earliest Roman statues in Adana are from the early first century A.D. and they continue until the end of the fourth century A.D. The majority of pieces belong to the third century A.D. The rich Roman portrait sculpture of Adana is a remarkable collection. Most of the statues are ideal sculptures. Almost half of the collection remains as unpublished.

XII. - XIV. Yüzyıllara tarihlenen Feke Süphandere’deki yapı;  ilk örneklerine Roma Çağı’nda sivil ve mezar mimarisinde rastlanan ve Erken Hıristiyanlık Dönemi’nden itibaren de özellikle kilise ve küçük şapellerde sıklıkla uygulanan trikonkhos planlı mimari kapsamında değerlendirilmiştir.

Feke - Süphandere’deki yapının üzerinde inşa tarihi, banisi, ustası vb hakkında bilgi veren bir kitabe bulunmamaktadır. Yerel hikayeler eşkiyalar tarafından başı kesilen Süphan Dede isimli bir kervancıdan bahseder ve mezarının bu yapı olduğunu söyler. Yerel halktan alınan başka bilgilere göre ise öldürülen ve kafası kesilen kişi Müslüman, katilleri ise Gayri Müslim'dir.

Söylencelerin biçiminde izlenebilen martyr motifi dikkat çekicidir ya da bir başka deyişle söylence deforme edilmiş bir martyr mitosunu anımsatmaktadır.

Merkezi bir plan çevresinde, eşit ölçülerde üç eksedrayla genişleyen düzende bir plana sahip yapılar “trikonkhos” ya da “üç yapraklı yonca” planlı olarak ifade edilir . Üç konkhosun – yaprağın – yer aldığı plan tipi cella trichora, cella trichorum (triclinium) ve üç konkhoslu olarak da adlandırılmaktadır.

Doğu batı doğrultusunda uzanan tek nefli trikonkhos planlı yapı dıştan 15.00 m x 12.75 m içten 13.65 m x 10.94 m ölçülerindedir.

Yapı büyük ölçüde tahrip olmuş durumdadır. Kuzey Konkhos dışında; üst örtü bütünüyle yıkılmış, beden duvarları üst örtü seviyesine dek kısmen sağlam durumda günümüze ulaşabilmiştir.

Dışta, arazinin eğimini takip eden ve beden duvarlarını kuşatan, içte ise kemer ayağına dek toprak dolgu altındaki yapıda; zemin seviyesinin 150 cm – 200 cm aşağıda olduğu düşünülmektedir.

Yapının doğusunda üç yarım daire planlı trikonkos, batısında ise doğu – batı doğrultusunda uzanan dikdörtgene yakın planlı nef, plan şemasını şekillendirir.

Yarım daire kubbe üst örtüsü günümüze ulaşmış kuzey konkhos, diğer ikisinden farklı olarak oldukça sağlamdır. İçten 3.20 m, 4.10 dıştan çapında konkhosa, güney cephesini büyük ölçüde kaplayan sivri kemerle geçilir. Konkhosun, merkezi bölüme bir sivri kemerle açıldığı güney hattın batısında 100 cm uzunluğunda ve 90 cm kalınlığında bir duvar yer alır.

Kuzey konkhosa girişte, güney hat ve doğu duvara yaslandırılmış 13 cm kalınlığında ve 20 cm – 30 cm yüksekliğinde betonarme bir duvarla çevrelenmiş, doğu – batı doğrultusunda uzanan 200 cm x 115 cm ölçülerinde dikdörtgen planlı doğrudan gömü mezar yer alır. Mezarda baş ve ayakta şahidelere yer verilmemiş ya da olası şahideler günümüze ulaşmamıştır.


Yapının işlevi tam olarak tespit edilememiştir. Yapı içinde bulunan müslüman mezarları, tarihsel sürecinin bir parçası ve belki de işlev olarak devamlılığıdır. İlk inşa döneminde bir martyrion ya da kilise olma ihtimali bulunmaktadır. Benzer çağdaş örnekleri içinde kilise yapıları çoğunluktadır ancak yapının bir yerleşim içinde bulunmaması martyrion olma ihtimalini de dikkatimize sunmaktadır.

Süphandere’deki trikonkhos planlı yapı, Ortaçağ mimarisinin belirgin bir örneği ve Kilikya Bölgesindeki önemli ve değerli bir temsilcisidir. Adana sınırları içinde benzer plana sahip bir başka yapı bulunmamaktadır. En yakın örnekler Mersin - Mut ve Antalya – Gazipaşa ve Kayseri - Ortaköy’dedir.

"Our surveys in Ceyhan constitute the second stage of
the fifth part of our surveys in Adana and Kayseri from
2002 onwards. We began our surveys here in 2005 after
the completion of surveys in Tufanbeyli (2002-2005),
Saimbeyli (completed in 2003) and Kozan (prehistoric
and historic periods completed in 2004).
Our primary goal was to revisit the settlements that
had previously been surveyed by other researchers and
published in the archaeological literature and to identify
the prehistoric, proto-historic and 2nd millennium B.C.
settlements. With the completion of the work intended
in the next campaign, we will have prepared the detailed
archaeological settlement inventory of the region."

The site of Sirkeli Höyük, one of the biggest settlement mounds in Cilicia, has yielded substantial archaeological remains dating from the 4th to 1st millennia BC. Different occupational levels were already discovered during previous excavations conducted at the site between 1992-1997. Since 2006 a new Turkish-German expedition is working on the site again. This paper outlines the stratigraphy of the site and describes the architectural remains as well as the ceramic sequence on the basis of both the former and the renewed excavations as a contribution to the broader understanding of the cultural developments in this region.

Cilicia played a very important role in the history of
civilizations, with its extensive arable lands and its position
as a bridge between Anatolia, Mesopotamia and the
Eastern Mediterranean, connecting these areas by land,
sea and rivers. At the same time, Cilicia created its very
own culture, and its peoples carried this culture to other
regions, founded independent states, and recorded their
languages already in ancient times. It is one of the few
regions where over the centuries great inventions were
made and major developments occurred in religion, literature,
medicine, pharmacy, philosophy, magic and divination.
The most important reason for writing this book is to introduce
the archaeological and cultural heritage of Cilicia
as well as its natural beauty in a convenient handbook, in
both English and Turkish, while also summarizing recent
developments in the region. It serves not only as a travel
guide, but also presents spectacular images of the region.
Several travel routes leading from west to east within the
region are suggested. It is expected that especially tourism
professionals will benefit from this publication.

Bu çalışma Keşbükü yerleşmesinin Demir Çağı öncesi dönemlerine açıklık getirmektedir. M.Ö. 2. Binde Hitit yazılı kaynaklarında Ellibra-Allapratu ve M.Ö. 1. bin yılda Geç Asur kaynaklarında İllubru olarak geçen Çamlıyayla ve Tarsus gibi önemi tartışmasız iki yerleşmenin tam ortasında yüksek bir tepelik üzerinde yer alan Keşbükü stratejik olarak güvenlik- savunma- ticari bağlantılar anlamında önemli bir konuma sahiptir. Seramik buluntular yanı sıra çekirdek tablası ve dilgi gibi obsidiyen buluntular yerleşmenin Neolitik/Kalkolitik Çağ’dan Demir Çağı sonuna kadar iskan edildiğini göstermektedir. Bu çalışma ile yerleşmede ele geçen Demir Çağı öncesi çanak çömlekleri incelenmiştir. Bu çanak çömlekler Erken Tunç Çağı ve çoğunlukla da Geç Tunç Çağı karakterindedir. Erken Tunç Çağı örnekleri daha çok yerel özellikler gösterirken Geç Tunç Çağı örnekleri genel hatları ile İç Anadolu Bölgesi’nde Hitit etkisi altındaki yerleşimlerden çok iyi bilinen çanak çömlek ile benzerlik göstermektedir. Özellikle “Drab Ware” mal grubu ile şekillendirilmiş tabak, kase, dar boyunlu çömlekler tipik Hitit İmparatorluk Dönemi ya da “North-Central Anatolian-Style” seramiği karakterindedir. Bu durum Keşbükü’nün aynı zamanda Hitit etkisinde bir yerleşme olduğuna işaret etmektedir.

Across the eastern Mediterranean, only a limited number of inscriptions, coins and papyri attest the term ἐπιν(ε)ίκια bestowed on local festivities. My paper studies for the first time the genesis and evolution of a particular title that could be presented as a sign of loyalty and friendship towards Roman rule. Through an analysis of mostly direct evidence, I aim to provide the perspective of certain local communities which, while subjected to Rome, remarkably strove to celebrate its victories. This bottom-up approach also seeks to show the importance of reciprocity in the constant diplomatic exchange between emperors, administrators and eastern provincials.

Belief in the presence of malevolent spirits residing in the
ruins of abandoned cult buildings is an enduring theme in religious history. This short magazine article provides an introduction to the architectural, structural and sociological aspects of temple destruction and conversion in the late antique period.

Adamotu (Mandragora sp.), Patlıcangiller (Solanaceae) familyasından, toprağın hemen üstünde gelişen rozet yapraklı, olgunlaştığında sarı renkli meyveli ve kazık köklü çok yıllık bir bitkidir. Ortadoğu’nun sıcak bölgelerinin doğal bir bitkisidir ve dünyanın diğer bölgelerinde çok nadir görülmektedir. Kökleri % 0,3 oranında Hiyosiyamin, Skopolamin ve Atropin içerir. Bundan dolayı zehirli bir bitkidir. Ağrı kesici, yatıştırıcı, cinsel gücü arttırıcı gibi etkileri vardır. Bu özelliklerinden dolayı adamotu binlerce yıldır tıp, sihir ve büyücülükte kullanılan, mistik güçler yüklenen en önemli bitkilerden biri olmuştur. Hitit tabletlerinde yazılı bitkiler arasında adı ĜIŠNAM.TAR olarak geçen adamotu da yer almaktadır. Hititlere tıp ve büyü konusunda uzman kişiler özellikle Kizzuwatna’dan yani Çukurova Bölgesi’nden gelmiştir. Hitit Dönemi’nin en önemli kutsal kentlerinden biri olan Lawazantiya’ya aday Tatarlı Höyük’teki 2012 kazı sezonunda yapılan arkeobotanik çalışmalarda karbonlaşmış Mandragora sp. (Adamotu) tohumu tespit edilmiştir. Tohum örneklerinin bulunduğu mekânda havan ve havaneli gibi malzemelerin bulunması Hititler döneminde de bu bitkinin tıbbi amaçlarla yaygın bir kullanımının olduğunu göstermektedir. Tatarlı Höyük yakınlarında bulunan Anavarza Antik Kenti’nde yaşamış olan ünlü Anadolu hekimi Dioscorides, en önemli eseri “De Materia Medica”‘da adamotundan hazırlanan şarabın anestezik olarak, ameliyat olacak veya dağlanacak hastalara verildiğini M.S. 1. yüzyılda bildirmiştir.

The excavations in Tatarlı Höyük has stanked in 2007 by courtesy of The
Ministry of Culture and Tourism, General Directorate for Cultural Heritage and Museums and Çukurova University. After seven archaeological seasons, an enormous Hittite- Kizzuwatna city has been unearthing with its Upper and Lower Cities, necropolis, temples, gate ways with ramps and pavings, tremendous and spectacular defense systems.
Excavations in Tatarlı Höyük particularly plays an important role in
introducing Adana.

This paper presents some thirty unpublished bronze lamps that are housed in local museums
of Cilicia, Hatay and Mardin in southern Turkey. The chosen methodology of this paper is
to compare these lamps typologically, dating them by reference to the extensively published
examples by Maria Xanthopoulou, 2010. The dating of our lamps does not generally extend
beyond the Early Byzantine period, although some isolated samples could be later. In
addition, they belong to a very homogenous group because of their restricted area of origin.
Thus, our awareness of the objects enriches the general overview already offered by the
latest European and Mediterranean studies on this topic. The Southern Anatolian workshops
initially based their work on Italic patterns, were later influenced by the Byzantine art of
Constantinople, and, after the Muslim conquest, by Islamic models.

This is a study of the Christianisation of the built environment: the physical manifestation of the transition from paganism to Christianity in the Greek East. The core of this thesis comprises an archaeological exploration of temple conversion in terms of structural mechanics, logistics, chronology and socio-political implications. 

This work provides a re-assessment of the fate of the temples – their deconsecration, destruction, preservation, abandonment and re-utilisation – by supplementing and questioning the historical record through reference to the wealth of available archaeological evidence.

Several inscriptions from the 8 th century BCE shed some light on the history of the "Neo-Hittite" kingdom of Hiyawa/Qawa/Que, locat ed in Plain Cilicia. They mention the kings Awariku and Warika and a de facto ruler named Azatiwada, the latter famous through his foundation of Karatepe. So far, the chronological relationship between these persons as well as an accurate dating of the related sculptures and stelae could not be determined. Even the question of whether Awariku and Warika are one or two kings is unclear. Superimposed on these problems, further pecu liarities of Hiyawa within the Neo-Hittite culture, such as a strong Cypriot influence in ceramic production or the frequent use of the Phoenician language and script, have remained largely unanswered. A first step in clarifying these problems is the exact dating of the people involved and also of the foundation of Azatiwadaya (Karatepe). In the following essay, all relevant historical and archaeological evidence is re-evaluated to eluci date the dating of Karatepe, and the identity of Awariku. The result places Azatiwada and Karatepe either before 765 BCE, if one accepts that Awari ku and Warika are identical, or in the time between 765 and 740, in case of different persons, which seems more likely. Furthermore, a connection is established between Cypriot influence on the one hand and the use of the Phoenician script and language in Cilicia on the other.

This study is a reconsideration of the Massacres of 1909 in the light of the
ethnoreligious relations in four urban centers (Kayseri, Maraş, Zeytun, and
Antakya) from its hinterlands. Based on mainly Ottoman, British, and
American Board Commission archival documents, it scrutinizes the history
of these urban centers in the first year of the Young Turk period and explains
the two massacres in Adana town center with the conclusions drawn from
them. Demonstrating the ethnoreligious tensions, the protests against local
governments, the role of religion, the agency of the commoner Muslims, and
the power of Muslim notables between the Revolution and the Massacres; the study calls for a reevaluation of some predominant paradigms of causation, which are the dominance of the center over the regions, base over
superstructure, and patrician over plebeian in interpreting the Young Turk
regime’s abstract principles, specifically on the rights of Ottoman Armenians.
Also, the study investigates the relationship between the Massacres and the 31 March Incident and suggests going beyond the historiography that belittles the conception of reaction by dividing it into three stages: absorption, antirevolution, and counterrevolution. The study argues that Massacres of 1909 were reactionary movements in the stage of anti-revolution, and their potential of turning into counterrevolution was a vital factor in making the already reluctant Young Turk policymakers abandon the realization of universalist principles regarding Ottoman Armenian rights.

Detailed chapters on the mechanics and chronology of particular forms of conversion scenario illustrate the emergence of an architectural vocabulary of temple conversion from the middle of the 5th century. 

In order to assess the impact of change on a local level, these primary issues are addressed through the archaeology of provincial Cilicia. This sheds new light on several well-known temple conversions and raises important questions about those for which the evidence is less conclusive. It is through this kind of regional study that the variability in the fate of temples is realised and increasingly attributed not to the influence of a particular piece of legislation, but to local and regional circumstances and context.

Detailed studies of individual sites have also enabled the formulation of a methodological critique for the identification of the sites of temple conversion in their various manifestations: from complete incorporation of the temple remains, to piecemeal appropriation of individual architectural elements. 

Archaeological, historical and epigraphical evidence from over 250 structures in which the influence of a pre-existing temple has been detected, have been incorporated into a highly detailed database, providing a platform for information management and the analysis of trends in the fate of the temples.

By looking beyond the subjective narratives of the primary historical sources, this thesis demonstrates that the archaeological evidence can provide us with a deeper understanding of the complexity and variability of temple conversion as it occurred in individual urban contexts. This has enabled the formulation of a more coherent picture of its significance and situation in the cultural and physical transformation of the late antique city.

The paper focuses on three moments in the history of Cilicia and its
Catholicosate between 1375 and 1915. They relate to the period
after the fall of the last Armenian kingdom, the reestablishment of
the Catholicosate in Echmiadzin, and the crises between the
patriarchal sees of Sis, Echmiadzin, and Constantinople.

The topic of the present contribution is two ethnic terms of likely Aegean origin specified in the title, which appear, in different guises, in written sources of the late 2nd and early 1st millennium BC across the entire Eastern Mediterranean, from Egypt in the South to the Levant to Cilicia in the North (besides the Aegean itself). My discussion of them will be, however, not quite the same. As for the first one, Ahhiyawa or Hiyawa, I will summarize the recent discussion revolving around recognition of this name in the Hieroglyphic-Luwian inscription KARATEPE, adding some details and placing it in a more general historical context. The second and central part of the paper will concern Danu(na), in which a full linguistic reassessment of this term and a revision of different sources which mention it will be offered. The third part will discuss the distinction between the two terms, also touching upon the problem of ethnolinguistic boundaries in Late Bronze Age Greece.

The land Purušhanda was connected with the Luwian culture and religion. It appears to be a part of the Land of Luwiya. This book describes three phases of the history of the kingdom:  the rise of a kingdom, the great kingdom and Purušhanda as a principality under the realm of Hattusha.

A case is made in recent books by Lascelles and Crowe that Homer’s Trojan War setting was not at Schleimann’s Hisarlik site of King Priam’s Ilium, but at Pergamon. We review their case, the places frequented by Homer as possible clues, and the Iliad’s revision as compiled and promoted by Athens and followed by Alexander the Great and the Romans. We then focus on numismatic evidence in the alternative regions of Northwest Anatolia (NWA) and Central West Anatolia (CWA). NWA includes the regions known as Troas, North Mysia, Hellespontic Thrace with nearby islands, and Bithynia. CWA regions include South Mysia with nearby islands, Aeolis, Ionia, Lydia, and Phrygia, as well as Cilician expatriate lands. We find that NWA coins are rich in early Iliadic mythology, indicating that Ilium was a Trojan War setting. However, we also find indications that the war was more extensive than commonly envisioned. It was led in CWA by King Telephus, who spearheaded an East versus West world war whose campaigns ended at Ilium.

In this article, it is presented that the Roman houses called Hillside Houses and their mosaic pavements from Aigeai in Cilicia. During the excavations carried out in the east of the Yeniköy Stream on the south coast of the city, Roman Imperial Period civil residences and two mosaic floors with figures were unearthed. Roman houses consist of a dining room, a waiting room, a bedroom, rest rooms, corridors around the peristyle, and a kitchen, cellar, cistern and workshops behind these rooms. The mosaics found in the Roman house are the Hippokampos Mosaic and the Spring Festival Mosaic. Eros fishing on two antithetic hippocamps in the Hippokampos Mosaic, two people sitting on chairs with a view from the city in the Spring Festivals Mosaic are depicted. These impressive mosaics, which are different from each other in terms of subject, were made under the influence of Classical Naturalism in the end of the 2nd century AD and are given in a detailed and realistic structure.
