Mark Lilla

O livro A mente naufragada de Mark Lilla (2018), dedica-se ao incompreendido e pouco estudado espírito reacionário. Esse espírito moldou a imaginação de
pensadores políticos e movimentos ideológicos desde o último século até os dias de
hoje. Lilla afirma que é desconcertante notar que há uma infinidade de livros sobre
a ideia de revolução em todas as principais línguas do mundo. Mas não temos um
número adequado sobre a ideia de reação. Temos uma “presunçosa convicção de
que ela se enraíza na ignorância e na intransigência, se não em motivos ainda mais
inconfessáveis” (LILLA, 2018, p. 9). Podemos admitir que o pensamento reacionário
é relegado “às margens da investigação intelectual respeitável” (LILLA, 2018, p. 9).
Ou seja, não é merecedor de estudo e de pesquisa.
No entanto, vale ressaltar que o pensamento e o espírito reacionário são tão

The following essay is a reflection on the nature of ‘home’ as an idea constitutive of Western thought. This idea is by no means monolithic, but has gone through a variety of permutations and reconfigurations the more its past iterations have proven unsatisfactory. It will be argued that Western secular society remains committed to the Modern project to the extent that it embraces an ‘optics of the transitory’, but also to the extent that it locates its telos and consummation – its ‘homeland’ so to speak – ‘in the world’, conceived as a totalized secular reality. It will further be argued that, from the perspective of the Christian theological tradition, this project is destined for perpetual failure, but this failure gives rise to the possibility of conceiving things alternatively, recovering a hidden virtue in the experience of ourselves and our civilization as homeless, in as much as it clears a path for our prodigal return ‘home’.

The United States is in a time of “unlaw” that is both a point in circular time, the time of eternal return, and a point never before reached. This “unlaw” infuses both the practical, applied, and experiential world of politics. Additionally, this era of “unlaw” also incorporates the intellectual world of philosophy and theology as well as political theory.

In this state of non-law, the United States incarcerates a higher percentage of people than any other developed nation. The United States claims to value money so much that it is speech, and thus free under the First Amendment.  This results in blocking election reform in an admittedly “broken” electoral system. The United States stock market fluctuates wildly and its citizens know there is no new world order on the horizon. The “war” on terror is bankrupting the United States. The United States is not doing well by anyone’s standards. However, “unlaw” is necessary to bind us together and open our eyes to these contradictions that the law creates.

RESUMO O dilema do onívoro, apresentado inicialmente por Michael Pollan (2006), traz, em síntese, a premissa de que pode-se conviver com aspectos diferentes e que deve-se evitar os extremos. Baseando-se em tais ideias, Jonathan Haidt (2012), psicólogo social estadunidense e professor da Universidade de Nova York, passou a trabalhar o dilema do onívoro a par r de uma perspec va polí co ideológica, buscando entender, em especial, como as pessoas passam a defender exclusivamente um extremo, excluindo a ideia fundamental da necessidade de um meio termo e/ou da qualidade e, em úlmo caso, até racionalidade de um debate. Com base em tais aspectos, o presente estudo busca estabelecer um diálogo entre estes conceitos e o da mente naufragada, de Mark Lilla (2018), relacionando com aa crise da democracia e a problemá ca da polarização polí ca nos dias atuais. ABSTRACT The omnivore's dilemma, ini ally presented by Michael Pollan (2006), brings, in summary, the premise that one can live with different aspects and that one should avoid extremes. Based on such ideas, Jonathan Haidt (2012), American social psychologist and professor at New York University, started to work on the omnivore's dilemma from an ideological poli cal perspec ve, trying to understand, in par cular, how people come to be to exclusively defend an extreme, excluding the fundamental idea of the need for a middle ground and/or quality and, ul mately, even ra onality for a debate. Based on such aspects, the present study seeks to establish a dialogue between these concepts and Mark Lilla's (2018) shipwrecked mind, rela ng to the crisis of democracy and the problem of poli cal polariza on today.
