Normalmente, las reseñas de libros académicos tratan de sintetizar el contenido de la obra y dimensionar su relevancia con algún suceso que se considere de interés en la actualidad: véase algún caso, polémica o problemática que se haya suscitado recientemente. En el presente trabajo, se tratará de llamar la atención en dos aspectos de la obra y, en específico, del autor: en primer lugar, se busca destacar la valía de la exploración que en el libro se realiza de distintas disciplinas bajo la mirada de una perspectiva epistémica/normativa particular: la del desaventajado; y, seguidamente, expresar una breve radiografía acerca de la personalidad que denota el libro.

W niniejszym opracowaniu kwestie dotyczące praw człowieka zostały przedstawione w ujęciu regionalnym. Podejście do praw człowieka jest bo-wiem zróżnicowane w zależności od położenia geograficznego, rozwoju cywilizacyjnego, odmiennego kontekstu kulturowego, prawnego, politycznego, a także psychologicznego.
Współcześnie wiele uwagi poświęca się takim prawom człowieka, jak: prawa kobiet, więźniów, ludów rdzennych, wolności słowa, zrzeszania się, prawu do życia, bezpieczeństwa i pokoju. Z tego względu autorzy poszczególnych artykułów skupili się na tych właśnie konkretnych prawach.

Isaiah Berlin introduces two concepts of liberty and this distinction of liberty although is on the one side relevant and important but on the other problematic and questionable. Berlin’s distinction points out that these concepts of the positive and negative liberty are really antagonistic. There are two points of view; one is the point of a human nature or man as individual and the second is the point of a human society. The main purpose of our article is to answer the question which of these concepts is more suitable from the human nature or human society point of view. Berlin’s conclusion is that the negative liberty more reflects the human nature and is a truer human ideal than the positive concept of liberty with the goals of those who seek after a better society. But contrary to Berlin we want to prove that this result is not so evident because each one of these concepts implicitly contains some problematic difficulties which cannot be so simply overcome by Berlin’s dichotomy. For this reason the result of our analysis is a scale of liberty between its two poles.

Course Description & Aim
The rise of National Socialism to power prompted an unprecedented large-scale exodus of Central European scholars who have had an enormous impact on American cultural life in particular, and the post-World War II world of politics in general. The primary aim of the course is to introduce students to the key ideas and classical writings of these figures, and to examine their responses to and analysis of the age of extremes. We will begin our journey with the writings of Theodor Adorno, Herbert Marcuse and Erich Fromm – the founders of the Frankfurt School – and will continue with the analyses of totalitarianism and " political Messianism " offered by Hannah Arendt, Gershom Scholem, Jacob L. Talmon, and Karl Popper, which we will then compare and contrast with the evaluation of liberalism one finds in the writings of Leo Strauss, Isaiah Berlin, and Arthur Koestler. We shall examine these thinkers' analyses of enlightenment, nationalism, socialism, and totalitarianism, their life stories, and their direct and indirect role in creating a transatlantic political discourse in postwar years. We will try to ask ourselves to what extent were their political and philosophical writings designed as a response to the maladies of the twentieth century, and to what extent did their Jewishness notify their writings, if at all. By doing so we shall be able to contextualize historically the fundamental features of Jewish intellectual activity after 1945.

Moderni valstybė politikos filosofijoje (ypač klasikinio liberalizmo tradicijoje, bet ne tik joje) dažnai suprantama kaip individo laisvę ribojanti jėga, o ne kaip laisvės šaltinis. Nors jau intuityviai skirtumas tarp individo ir valstybės yra akivaizdus, vis dėlto opozicija tarp laisvės ir valstybės, kaip sugestijuoja Lietuvos istorinė patirtis, yra klaidinga ar bent įtartina. Čia galima įžvelgti prieštarą tarp skirtingų laisvių, tačiau ar ši prieštara tikrai yra būtina ar neišvengiama? Tarsi akivaizdu, kad be savos valstybės būtų gerokai problemiškiau svarstyti ir apie laisvę individualiu lygmeniu, jos siekti politinėmis, demokratinėmis priemonėmis. Tad švęsdami laisvę valstybėje, o ne nuo valstybės, akivaizdžiai susiduriame su politinės laisvės daugiaprasmiškumu. Ir tai visų pirma sąvokinė problema. Savo garsiojoje esė "Dvi laisvės sąvokos", kuri visų pirma nuskambėjo 1958 m. Oksforde kaip inauguracinė profesoriaus kalba, Isaiah Berlinas (1909-1997) glaustai ir sistemiškai apžvelgė esmines laisvės sampratos skirtis Vakarų politinės minties istorijoje: visų pirma tarp negatyvios (kaip laisvės nuo ko nors, t. y. išorinių trikdžių) ir pozityvios laisvės (laisvė save determinuoti ir siekti savo gėrio,-ne tik kaip teorinė galimybė, bet ir kaip praktinis galėjimas). Turbūt vien šio jo teksto būtų pakakę Berlinui patekti į XX a. politinės filosofijos auk-so fondą. Rygoje gimęs, Anglijoje intelektualiai subren-dęs filosofas save laikė liberaliosios minties teoretiku ir jis neabejotinai ženkliai prisidėjo, kad politinė mintis sugrįžtų į anglosaksiškosios filosofijos diskursą. Vis dėlto paties Berlino pozicija laisvės sampratų atžvilgiu dažnai regima labai supaprastintai, jis būna net-gi pavadinamas šių sampratų kūrėju ar bent atradėju. Dar dažniau Berlinas pristatomas vien kaip pozityvios laisvės kritikas ir negatyvios laisvės gynėjas. Šiame tekste kaip tik bus mėginama tokius supaprastinimus užklausti laikantis pozicijos, jog abi laisvės sampratos būtinos viena kitai egzistuoti ir sėkmingai funkcionuoti (net jei praktikoje ir ideologinėse kovose dažnai ir kon-kuruoja), o problemos politiniame gyvenime kyla kaip tik pernelyg nusveriant laisvės sampratą į vieną kurią pusę. Given the recent and ongoing economic crisis and high levels of consumer debt, the teaching of financial literacy in elementary and secondary schools has received widespread support. Too often, however, financial literacy education policy documents promote the individualization of economic risk and privilege the autonomy of the consumer or consumer-citizen over that of the critical citizen. This article argues for the necessity of a critical financial literacy education aimed at supporting critical citizens by providing a Marxist critique of the dominant liberal and neoliberal notions of freedom and responsibility reproduced in financial literacy education policy documents. The choice highlighted here is not between financial illiteracy and financial literacy but between accommodating oneself to neoliberal capitalism’s needs so as to remain in perpetual competition with others or understanding and collectively altering an economic system that promotes alienation, insecurity and exploitation.

In the anthropology of ethics there has been a growing interest in the concept of freedom, defined as the tool of consciousness that enables people to reflect on themselves and their circumstances, and make decisions about what they ought to do. The benefit of understanding freedom as a grounded ethical practice is that it allows us to appreciate how people constitute themselves through the choices they make. What this obscures, however, is an understanding of how freedom figures in situations where people no longer feel the need to consider what they ought to do and where choice becomes redundant. Through an exploration of nonviolent action in the 2011 Yemeni revolution, this essay proposes a notion of freedom as liberation from moral choice, where choice is a burden. It concludes by reconsidering the extent to which ethical thought can adequately account for the varieties of human freedom in different ethnographic contexts.

El bien común es un concepto complejo, que en general puede ser entendido como aquello de lo que se benefician todos los ciudadanos o como los sistemas sociales, instituciones y medios socioeconómicos de los cuales todos dependemos de que funcionen de manera que beneficien a toda la gente. Más recientemente, John Rawls lo definió como " ciertas condiciones generales que son... de ventaja para todos ". De acuerdo con Renate Mayntz, todas las grandes ciencias comparten un interés en las precondiciones necesarias para obtener un cierto fin social que es percibido como deseable. Luego de esta definición, los puntos de vistas enfocados de Hardin y Ostrom se basan desde el génesis del problema, es decir, " tenemos recursos finitos en una humanidad con necesidades infinitas ". Hardin aborda la parte de la formulación del problema mientras que Ostrom se basa en la praxis, el primero hace énfasis en la responsabilidad mientras que la segunda introduce el concepto de Responsabilidad más un nuevo elemento o Agente Regulador, que podría ser el Estado o las Asociaciones Privadas. El escenario que presenta Hardin, ya había sido descrito por el matemático William Forster Lloyd con anterioridad, pero Hardin basa su ensayo en un problema que tenemos latente hoy en día: la sobrepoblación. En estos momentos cada individuo (siempre y cuando no esté regulado por regímenes de propiedad privada) toma lo que quiere del hábitat, lo maximiza para su uso personal, pero el costo de maximizar a nivel individual arroja un costo a nivel global. El problema sería como regular estos " bienes " sin excluir a nadie. En contradicción con esta idea esta Ostrom, pues ve que si los recursos se privatizan podrían ser mejor controlados por la regulación del Estado o una empresa privada. Ejemplos DEL PASTIZAL CON LOS MODELOS HARDIN Y OSTROM: Si el pastizal es común, todos los ganaderos llevaran tantas vacas necesiten para maximizar sus ingresos, al final, desaparecerá el pastizal por la sobrepoblación ganadera, dejando ganancias a los dueños de las vacas, pero un problema al medio ambiente, por lo tanto, los dueños a largo plazo también tendrán otro problema de mayor cuantía. We do not have to take Kelsen's relativism at face value. Indeed, what he calls value relativism makes much more sense if read in the light of Isaiah Berlin’s value pluralism. In comparing Kelsen and Berlin, this paper sets out to liberate Kelsen’s theories from the problematic legacy of relativism. It does so to give Kelsen’s work a better foundation that is less fraught with problems. Kelsen and Berlin concur in that the question of values is one of value conflicts; that in such conflicts, there is no rational solution; that therefore, a choice, that is, a decision must be made; that nevertheless, this decisionism does not prevent compromise, but on the contrary, enables it; and that this kind of pluralist decisionism is a good foundation for liberal democracy.

Liberalism is a term employed in a dizzying variety of ways across the humanities and social sciences. This essay seeks to reframe how the liberal tradition is understood. I start by delineating different types of response – prescriptive, comprehensive, explanatory – that are frequently conflated in answering the question “what is liberalism?” I then discuss assorted methodological strategies employed in the existing literature: after rejecting “stipulative” and “canonical” approaches, I outline a contextualist alternative. On this (comprehensive) account, liberalism is best characterised as the sum of the arguments that have been classified as liberal, and recognised as such by other self-proclaimed liberals, over time. In the remainder of the article I present an historical analysis of shifts in the meaning of liberalism in Anglo-American political thought between 1850 and 1950, focusing in particular on how John Locke came to be seen as a liberal. I also explore the emergence of the category of "liberal democracy". I argue that the scope of the liberal tradition was massively expanded during the middle decades of the twentieth century, such that it came to be seen by many as the constitutive ideology of the West. This capacious (and deeply confusing) understanding of liberalism was produced by a conjunction of the ideological wars fought against “totalitarianism” and assorted developments in the social sciences. Today we both inherit and inhabit it.

This paper contrasts five contemporary political philosophies – neutralism, postmodernism, pluralism, anarchism, and patriotism – and argues that the latter is superior. This is because of how patriotism relates to the various political ideologies, including liberalism, conservatism, socialism, nationalism, feminism, and so on. A new, patriotic conception of the political spectrum is then advanced, one based on how people should respond to conflict: those on the left would have us do so with conversation; those in the centre with negotiation; and those on the right with force.

Romanticism is, in the thought of Isaiah Berlin, a lifestyle, an option to a pluralism that is not the same of relativism of values. In this sense, Romanticism is that way of life that can give rise to a democracy of compromise, based on a non-relativistic permeability of values. In Berlin?s thought, liberalism and democracy of compromise can be interpreted as the outcome of the enthusiasm of  the Romantics.

Abstract: Isaiah Berlin’s idea of positive liberty has been widely simplified in the Chinese and Western contexts. In order to interpret its more complicated meanings, this article argues that there are three faces of positive liberty in the political philosophy of Isaiah Berlin. The first is original positive liberty, which means that I am free as far as I am not a slave, but my own master. The second is individual positive liberty, which suggests that I am free if my rational self controls my empirical self. The third is collective positive liberty, which entails that I am free if the collective self controls the individual self. The latter two are the perverted versions of the former. Therefore, Berlin criticizes only the perverted positive liberties rather than the original.

En la presente investigación además de cuestionar la normatividad tácita e implícita como representación de la voluntad de una clase no meramente social sino además política, ponemos en cuestión el mismo poder político que la sustenta atendiendo a la necesidad que, desde nuestra perspectiva, exige traspasar los límites marcados por las posturas individualistas y el puro análisis sociológico abstracto. Intentamos proponer en principio un análisis crítico a la noción de libertad desde la situación contemporánea y abrir de esta forma un espacio de reflexión y acción ante los numerosos y evidentes embates a la misma, procurando resistir al modelo reduccionista que se impone al tratar asuntos tanto morales como epistemológicos de forma aislada. Defendemos una postura que va más allá de la introspección e intenta anclarse en el acontecimiento mismo del ejercicio de la propia libertad, en los espacios mencionados anteriormente (de carácter público y privado), contrastando en ellos las diferencias existentes entre la multitud de concepciones y prácticas que le dan vigencia y que en muchos casos perpetúan un orden social y político. Cuestionamos así mismo las posturas que desvaloran o subestiman el ejercicio analítico de las cuestiones fundamentalmente sociales por considerarlas de carácter secundario o concerniente al individuo desde el mismo planteamiento de la investigación.

John Rawls’ gamification of justice leads him – along with many other monist political philosophers, not least Ronald Dworkin – to fail to take politics seriously enough. I begin with why we consider games frivolous and then show how Rawls’ theory of justice is not merely analogous to a game, as he himself seems to claim, but is in fact a kind of game. As such, it is harmful to political practice in two ways: one as regards the citizens who participate directly in it, and the other as regards those who do no more than follow it. Similar harms, I then argue, come from taking politics too seriously, which is the attitude I ascribe to pluralist political philosophers such as Isaiah Berlin, Stuart Hampshire, and Bernard Williams. To them, the plural, incommensurable nature of values means that they cannot be reconciled and so that politics must be a matter of negotiating dirty, and often tragic, compromises. What we need instead, I conclude, is a third way, one that is neither monist nor pluralist but in-between the two extremes.

Il presente lavoro lavoro tenta di ricostruire il pensiero epistemologico, filosofico e storico filosofico di I. Berlin tentando di inquadrarlo da un punto di vista genetico nel suo essere radicato nella unica e triplice identità culturale dell'autore (la cultura ebraica, quella russa e quella analitica oxoniense). Sono prese in esame le influenze di questè identità, il passare attraverso lo studio di autori come Vico, Machiavelli, Herder e il Romanticismo, fino a giungere alla trattazione, storica ed epistemologica,  figlia di questo percorso, dei concetti chiave del pensiero berliniano: il pluralismo valoriale, il concetto di libertà come libertà negativa e il suo peculiare liberalismo del New Deal.

This Master's dissertation aims to uncover the capacity for political expression within doom metal and willingness to make such expression amongst its proponents, and to identify trends within the genre that support social critique across the political spectrum. The body of the work is comprised of readings of various bands' lyrics, artworks and interviews.
The main focus rests upon the pursuit of individual liberty, comparable to ‘negative’ liberty as described by Berlin in Two Concepts of Liberty, which has featured in doom metal throughout its history and arguably represents a strong tendency toward libertarianism amongst its musicians and fans alike. Critiques of economic and social inequality and exclusion form another theme. A third section focuses on environmental concern, which has manifested in both overt and subtle critiques from doom metal groups, often in utopian terms, contrasted by a nihilistic vision of apocalypse and environmental destruction imagined by some of doom's heaviest and darkest bands. The final section explores the role of women and female empowerment within the genre.
The study then turns to examining the surrounding contexts of doom metal musicians and question the extent to which these contexts have been acknowledged or critiqued by the musicians and their works. After contextualising doom metal and its varied political expressions, the study attempts to find common ideological ground between doom metal artists overall and investigates whether the genre acts as an arena for social comment, or whether the opposite is true; that the escapist aesthetic promulgated within doom metal acts as a safe haven for its listeners, wishing to avoid political discourses in music.

Praca analizuje filozofię Gastona Bachelarda w kontekście tradycji literackiej niemieckiego i angielskiego romantyzmu. Francuskiego myśliciela zajmuje problem wyobraźni i mierzy się z nim, korzystając z utworów poetyckich. Wpływ romantycznych twórców można dostrzec na kilku poziomach. Filozof wielokrotnie powołuje się na XIX-wiecznych autorów i korzysta z fragmentów liryków jako egzemplifikacji swych tez. Aparat krytyczny, który stosuje, stanowi odzwierciedlenie romantycznych koncepcji poezji, przy dostosowaniu ich do zadań analitycznych. Elementy światopoglądu romantycznego można odnaleźć także w samej strukturze myślenia Bachelarda – w używanych przez niego podstawowych pojęciach, w rozumieniu czasu oraz w ogólnej teorii wyobraźni.

La tolerancia es un ideal y una práctica que cotiza al alza dentro del universo de valores de las democracias contemporáneas. Esto debe vincularse con la relevancia alcanzada por movimientos políticos e intelectuales, como el comunitarismo o el multiculturalismo, que cuestionan la neutralidad estatal como fórmula para organizar sociedades caracterizadas por el pluralismo de concepciones del bien y formas de vida: habida cuenta de tal pluralismo, cuanto se asume el compromiso con una determinada comunidad de valores como algo ineludible, la tolerancia se presenta como imprescindible para la convivencia.

El pensamiento liberal ha acusado recibo de todo esto: la cuestión de cómo articular los rasgos diferenciales de los grupos preservando al tiempo un marco de convivencia liberal se convirtió en un asunto fundamental para la teoría política liberal de final del siglo XX. El planteamiento más significativo al respecto es, sin duda, el del liberalismo político de John Rawls, con su idea de la tolerancia como lo que hace posible un acuerdo sobre el orden político para una sociedad liberal pluralista. Sin embargo, otros filósofos contemporáneos muy influyentes también han reflexionado sobre la tolerancia: es el caso de Michael Walzer, John Gray, Richard Rorty o Joseph Raz, quienes, de maneras muy distintas coinciden en asumir el punto de vista de Isaiah Berlin de que existe una multiplicidad de valores políticos que no son necesariamente reconciliables entre sí.

El libro que el lector tiene entre sus manos se propone ofrecer una exposición crítica de los teóricos citados. Tal exposición ofrece una visión de su obra centrada en la solución que proponen para afrontar los problemas derivados de la diversidad social conflictiva, lo cual permite al autor del libro desarrollar su propuesta normativa referente a cómo debe entenderse y justificarse la tolerancia. This article examines the tragic dimension of political action which, according to the interpretation of Isaiah Berlin, was expounded by Machiavelli where he defended the political priority of civic values of the classical world with the incompatible predominance of the Christian values of his time. The interpretation of Berlin is discussed first and then the article continues reflecting on the harm that derives from failing to take into account the tragic component of political decisions. However, flaws of adequacy and consistency are noted in the pluralistic philosophy developed by Berlin beginning with the proposition that not all ends are compatible with each other. These flaws in the philosophy of Berlin can be corrected if one chooses not to base pluralism in the incommensurable, taken as an inevitable fact. Instead, it is proposed to interpret pluralism as a contingent result of moral and political interaction.
According to Berlin, toleration is pluralism political correlation. However, it is debatable that the former can be derived from the latter.  Similarly, the manner in which pluralism sets its own limits appears to be inconsistent. This involves toleration claimed by Berlin becomes as uncertain as liberty and autonomy in the context of Machiavelli’s thought. In this connection, it will be submitted an interpretation of consequentialism as propounded by Machiavelli suitable for managing the risk in democratic societies.

Modern phenomena express the limitations of the Enlightenment ideals. Science and technology, the two sources of modern truth, cannot answer questions about meaning, subjectivity, or existential matters. Loneliness and political division are on the rise, but few have proposed how these concerns intrinsically relate to modernity's deficient approach to the world. Across disciplines, several overarching themes can be perceived such as particularization, isolation, sectorization, fragmentation and an unbridgeable dualism. Despite good intentions, the barren world created by the Renaissance and the Enlightenment is a path towards emptiness. Jean Gebser (1905-1973), a German-Swiss cultural critic, explains that modern phenomena are manifestations of a deficient consciousness structure. To permanently resolve these issues, contemporary consciousness must be shifted. The current mental-rational-perspectival structure must be transcended. The wholeness realized in the emerging integral structure can save humanity from the Enlightenment's one-sided bequeathal.

The problem of “dirty hands” concerns the possibility that there are situations in which, no matter what one does, there is no way to avoid committing a moral wrong. By presenting a taxonomy, this paper contends that the different ways of responding to the problem correspond to different positions on the classic metaphysical theme of “the One and the Many.” It is then suggested that the best, because most realistic, response aligns with an approach that would have us move “towards One, as Many.”

Two of the most iconic thinkers of the twentieth century, Hannah Arendt (1906–1975) and Isaiah Berlin (1909–1997) fundamentally disagreed on central issues in politics, history and philosophy. In spite of their overlapping lives and experiences as Jewish émigré intellectuals, Berlin disliked Arendt intensely, saying that she represented “everything that I detest most,” while Arendt met Berlin’s hostility with indifference and suspicion. Drawing on a wealth of new archival material, Kei Hiruta traces the Arendt–Berlin conflict, from their first meeting in wartime New York through their widening intellectual chasm during the 1950s, the controversy over Arendt’s 1963 book Eichmann in Jerusalem, their final missed opportunity to engage with each other at a 1967 conference and Berlin’s continuing animosity toward Arendt after her death. Hiruta blends political philosophy and intellectual history to examine key issues that simultaneously connected and divided Arendt and Berlin, including the nature of totalitarianism, evil and the Holocaust, human agency and moral responsibility, Zionism, American democracy, British imperialism and the Hungarian Revolution. But, most of all, Arendt and Berlin disagreed over a question that goes to the heart of the human condition: what does it mean to be free?
