For so long, scholarship in the West has argued that the memory of Saladin, the renowned, twelfth-century Kurdish-Muslim ruler, along with the memory of the Crusades, was “all but forgotten” in Islamic history prior to the onset of the modern period. Although recent studies have slowly begun to overturn this thesis, however, research on the topic so far has continued to neglect the many accounts on Saladin’s reign and the Crusades found in late medieval and early modern Arabo-Islamic historiography. This lacunae in scholarship is even more compelling considering that the sources dating from the early sixteenth to the late eighteenth centuries reveal a rich record of Saladin’s achievements; the sources also include numerous reports on other major Muslim figures who fought the Crusades, such as the Zengid ruler Nūr al-Dīn and the famous Mamlūk sultans Baybars and Qalawūn. Therefore, the present study will posit the hypothesis that Saladin’s reign and accomplishments, along with the history of the Crusades in the region, were etched into the historical memory of the Muslim world long after the end of the epoch. It will advance this thesis by exploring the much-neglected Arabo-Islamic historiographical sources dating from the early sixteenth to late eighteenth centuries, such as the universal chronicles, biographical dictionaries, and other historiographical genres. Based on this explorative survey, the study will further advance the emerging thesis that the memory of Saladin was not neglected after his death, but, rather, the Kurdish sultan’s career, along with the Age of the Crusades in general, left a lasting impression on the Islamic Near East during the late medieval and early modern period.

A persistent myth featuring in some modern accounts of the transition from Fatimid to Ayyubid rule (1169–71) is that one of Ṣalāḥ al-Dīn's (r. 1171–93) first actions upon attaining sovereignty over Egypt was to destroy the Fatimids’ book collections in their entirety. Medieval sources present a different, more nuanced depiction of books sold and dispersed over a decade or more, rather than extirpated and put out of circulation altogether. This article collects and examines medieval Arabic accounts of the episode, and finds further indications of the robust survival of Fatimid-era works in the composition of later chronicles, where native Fatimid-era accounts, which clearly did endure beyond the Fatimid age, are well-represented. The article also looks at the tendentious aspects of medieval accounts of Ṣalāḥ al-Dīn's policies, and the difficulties they pose to a modern appraisal of the sultan's character and intellectual-ideological tendencies.

время иконографический тип «Исида с Хором-младенцем». С одной стороны, это говорит о живучести культа богини, даже в обобщенном и деперсонализованном виде, без имени, в коптское время (ведь именно коптская традиция передана в арабском источнике), с другой стороны — ее волшебную статую следует
рассматривать в общем контексте с упоминанием множества других волшебных идолов и  изображений в  нашем источнике. Иными словами, можно говорить уже не только о позднейшей эллинизации образа Исиды, но и о некоторой его последующей арабизации.

                                      АННОТАЦИЯ
    Настоящая База данных представляет собой указатель тем и сюжетов арабо-мусульманских  династийных  хроник IX – X вв., эпохи, когда происходило становление средневековой арабской историографии. Данный  указатель ограничивается темами и сюжетами, касающимися истории мусульманской общины, не охватывая материалов, относящихся к истории  домусульманской.  Подобная База данных создана в отечественной, да и в мировой арабистике впервые.
    Арабо-мусульманские династийные  хроники -- это сочинения, в которых история мусульманской общины представлена в соответствии с периодами правления государей – первоначально пророка Мухаммада, а затем халифов.
    Понятие «арабо-мусульманские династийные хроники» обнимает  не только труды, составленные мусульманами, но также и историками-христианами, жившими в странах Халифата и писавшими по-арабски.
    В предлагаемой вниманию пользователей  Базе  данных фиксируются темы и сюжеты, почерпнутые из следующих  основных хроник  данного жанра, составленных  в IX – X вв.:

  Для регистрации каждого сообщения  в базе данных отводится отдельная  электронная «карточка». Она подразделяется на две части. 
    В первой из них, представляющей собой совокупность колонок, фиксируются «выходные данные» сообщения: источник (в виде символа), глава (в виде имени/прозвания главы мусульманской общины, которому она посвящена, и порядкового номера главы в памятнике), порядковый номер сообщения в главе, страница источника, где расположено данное сообщение,  объем текста сообщения в строках (с точностью до 0,5 строки), жанр данного сообщения  и тема сообщения (например, «личные качества и деяния главы мусульманской общины», «хаджж главы мусульманской общины», «присяга главе мусульманской общины», «назначение наследника халифской власти», «деяния доблестных мужей», «репрессии», «чудеса и природные явления»). 
    Вторая часть предназначена для фиксации собственно содержания сообщения.  Поскольку картотека, лежащая в основе настоящей Базы данных, создавалась в 1982 – 1995 гг., а отдельные ее слои подвергались переделке в 2005 и 2009 гг., характер записи содержания сообщения формировался постепенно – от  первоначально краткой до впоследствии весьма подробной, близкой к переводу. В силу этого и в Базе  данных содержание сообщений отражено по-разному.
      База данных обнимает так называемые сжатые сообщения,  беллетризованные сообщения, речения, послания, некрологические сообщения, стихотворные цитаты, коранические цитаты, авторские ремарки, анекдоты  и новеллы. Всего в Базе насчитывается около 4000 сообщений.
            Автор надеется, что собранный им в течение  почти всей его профессиональной деятельности материал не пропадет втуне, но окажется полезным как арабистам и прочим востоковедам, так и  всем, кто интересуется историей арабского и,  шире, мусульманского мира.

The paper deals with the topos of Amalecite rule in Egypt, its idea and historical correspondences. The Аrаb-Muslim scheme of Egypt's history fits surprisingly well the real history in case of the most important chronological points dividing different periods and in case of these periods’ duration and their content. However, the inner filling of this scheme is highly folklorized or fantastic. We can trace strongly negative correspondences in the stories of Amalecite rule in Egypt; together with other facts it can lead to the conclusion that the Arab authors keep proper Egyptian attitude to invaders retained in folklore.

Fozia Bora, A Mamluk Historian’s Holograph: Messages from a Musawwada of Taʾrīkh
Abstract: The holographic musawwada of the Mamluk historian Ibn al-Furāt’s (d. 1405) universal chronicle Taʾrīkh al-duwal wa ʾl-mulūk (covering 1107-1396) survives as a Vienna unicum. In this partcodicological, part-conceptual article, I set the manuscript in textual and historical context and explore the tension between its authority as an autograph, and its lack of authority qua draft. I look at the manuscript as a repository of earlier narratives, a ‘museum of texts’ by virtue of its ‘showcasing’ of earlier reports and marking their provenance. I discuss its concealed impact upon a textual tradition (historiography in Barqūq’s Egypt, 1382-1399). Though it was rough also for its orthographical and grammatical difficulties, its influence on Mamluk historiography was profound, especially through its use by al-Maqrīzī (d. 1442). This article celebrates the survival of an unusual manuscript resonating with authenticity of authorship, and explores the challenges involved in interpreting it as an archaeological object and a text.

Résumé: La musawwada (copie holographe) de la chronique universelle Taʾrīkh al-duwal wa ʾl-mulūk (couvrant les années 1107-1396), par l’historien Mamelouk Ibn al-Furāt (mort en 1405) est connue comme un unicum conservé à Vienne. Dans cette étude, à la fois codicologique et conceptuelle, je situe le manuscrit dans son contexte historique et textuel, and j’explore la tension entre son autorité comme autographe et son manque d’autorité comme état non définitif. J’examine la présence, dans ce manuscrit, de récits plus anciens, que le volume conserve tel un « musée de textes » lorsqu’il fait figurer des rapports antérieurs dont il donne la provenance. Je discute alors de son influence jusque là non relevée sur la tradition textuelle: l’historiographie dans l’Égype de Barqouq, 1382-1389. Malgré les difficultés de son orthographe et de sa grammaire, ce texte eut une profonde influence sur l’historiographie mamlouke, tout particulièrement par l’usage qu’en fit al-Maqrīzī (mort en 1442). Cet article présente la survie d’un manuscrit exceptionnel, laquelle entre en résonance avec la sûreté de l’attribution d’auteur. Il explore également les défis soulevés par l’interprétation de ce manuscrit, à la fois comme objet archéologique et comme texte.

В статье исследуется преемственность одного из топосов арабской исторической литературы о Египте от произведений древнеегипетской литературы. Сюжет о царице Далуке и волшебнице Тадуре продолжает линию сюжетного взаимодействия образов правителя и волшебника в древнеегипетской литературе, а также существенно дополняет ряд топосов использования волшебником магических существ-помощников в условиях кризиса государственной власти. В целом не вызывает сомнений как фольклорное древнеегипетское и коптское происхождение сюжета о Далуке, так и его устное бытование на момент вхождения в арабо-египетскую традицию.

This article discusses accounts in medieval Arabic source material of the siege, capture and battle of Antioch during the First Crusade. It begins with an overview of how the reporting of the crusaders’ conquest of Antioch varied between the regional Arab historiographical traditions. This is followed by an assessment of the importance Arabic chronicles placed on developments at Antioch from 490/1097 to 491/1098 by contrasting their coverage of these events with that of comparable episodes in Syrian history. Focus then shifts to how accounts of the Frankish conquest of Antioch changed over time, outlining attempts to attribute blame to individuals. Additionally, developments at Antioch during the First Crusade are placed in the context of comparable military activity in northern Syria during the late fifth/ eleventh century, removing the siege of Antioch and the defeat of the “’asākir al-Shām”, the Muslim relief force, from the traditional narrative structure of the First Crusade. The final section outlines instances of potential cross-pollination between Arabic and Latin source material.

This PhD thesis presents a new interpretation of the underlying political dynamics in northern Syria between 442-522/1050-1128, seeking to place the First Crusade and the formation of the Latin east within the wider context of Syrian history. In doing so, it raises questions about the course, nature, impact and significance of the Crusader States, with particular focus placed on the northern Crusader States..

Medieval Iberia was one of the most important places of cultural interaction and transcultural encounters within the Mediterranean space, where an extensive translation movement from Arabic into Latin and from Arabic into the emerging vernacular languages took place. Considering translation as a form of cultural interaction, this paper will investigate the cultural and philological relationships between two historical works, namely an earlier Arabic work of history, Akhbār Mulūk al-Andalus by Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn Mūsa al-Rāzī (887-955 AD) and its 14th century Portuguese translation, Cronica do Mouro Razis. The aim is to highlight some of the problems of historiographical writing and try to understand both the limitations and interventions of the translators when dealing with an historical text pertaining to another linguistic and cultural tradition.
