This paper examines the state of Ashʿarī scholarship in Ifrīqiya between the seventh/thirteenth and eighth/fourteenth centuries. It studies intellectual influences in the works of several theologians from this era, including the continuous Juwaynian impact, the rising engagement with Aristotelian logic, and the early reception of al-Rāzī’s works in the Maghrib.

جدير بالتنبيه إليه أنَّ للمغرب قصَّة طويلة مع الاعتزال؛ تتجلى في كون هذا النوَّع من الفكر كان سبَّاقا إلى ملئ فراغات كثيرة عرفها تاريخ الفكر الإسلامي في بلاد المغرب والأندلس، ابتداءً من القرن الثاني مع طوائف كبيرة تجد لها ذكراً في كتب التاريخ، خاصة تلك المؤرخة للفتح، ثم في القرن الثالث مع خليل الغفلة ) ق. 3) وابن السمينة (ت. 315هـ.) وما ينسب إلى ابن مَسَرَّة (ت. 319هـ.) من أفكار هي من أساسيات التفكير الكلامي الاعتزالي. ثم آخرون في القرن الرابع اعتنى بذكرهم ابن حزم (ت. 456هـ.) خاصة؛ منهم الفقيه الظاهري الكبير منذر ابن سعيد القاضي (ت. 355 هـ.)، ذي الأخبار الشهيرة في الفصاحة والبلاغة والعدل والزهد. في المقابل، وفي ذلك القرن الرَّابع بالذات، كانت الأشعرية تتربَّع على عرش الفكر المغربي، وكان أحد أساسيات الأشعريَّة كما هو معلوم هو إزاحة الفكر الاعتزالي حيثما وُجد، والحيلولة دون تسريب ما من شأنه التَّشويش على عقائد العوام. هنا بالضبط تأتي أهمية الحديث عن الكشَّاف، الكتاب الاعتزالي بامتياز. ماذا بعد ترسيم الأشعريَّة نهائياً في القرن الخامس، وماذا عسى الفكر الاعتزالي أن يفعل في الثقافة المغربية التي أغلقت الباب نهائياً في وجه هذا النوع من الفكر بالذات؟

This paper aims at elaborating a very special topic relative to the medieval philosophy; particularly, the question of noetic as was dealt with by a philosopher of the Islamic west. Although the article is but the first part of the whole work, it still reveals the originality and the innovative tendency brought about this philosopher. What is most essential in Ibn Bajja’s noetic is the absence of intellect in power and the presence of intellect in act, in the scheme of intellects, in addition the substance of the cogitative faculty is the intermediate spiritual forms. It is here where shows up the most important aspect of his originality; the forms which are closer to the nature of the intelligible, by virtue of the division into two parts: 1. By anteriority with regard to who/what resembles the sensible. 2. By posteriority with regard to who/what resembles the species/the kind.

Cet article retrace l’histoire d’une famille de notables fassis d’origine andalouse, les Banū Thaʻlaba, connus par diverses sources médiévales. Il s’agit dans un premier temps de dresser le portrait de ses membres en compilant de rapides données biographiques, afin d’illustrer et de comprendre la permanence de cette famille au plus haut niveau de la société. Dans un second temps, l’étude des Banū Thaʻlaba permettra de développer quelques réflexions plus générales sur la société de leur temps, en particulier sur l’intégration des Andalous aux élites urbaines du Maghreb al-Aqṣā.

La présentation vise à caractériser les repas de fête de l’Occident islamique médiéval (Maghreb et al-Andalus), en soulignant la place tenue par l’alimentation carnée à ces occasions. Il s’agit notamment de questionner l’hypothèse selon laquelle tout menu festif comprenait, fondamentalement, de la viande. Un enjeu consiste à ne pas restreindre l’étude aux festins des élites – mieux documentés – afin de chercher à appréhender l’ensemble de la population. Parmi les différentes festivités qui étaient célébrées par les populations, l’étude se centre sur deux moments de réjouissance : l’‘īd al-aḍḥà ou fête des Sacrifices, célébration canonique du calendrier musulman, et le repas de noces, moment majeur pour les individus ainsi que pour les familles et leurs proches. Certaines pratiques culinaires réalisées lors de ces deux festivités sont rapportées dans les deux livres de cuisine conservés de l’Occident islamique. Les informations recueillies sont complétées par des récits de voyage, des ouvrages hagiographiques ainsi que de la documentation juridique (fatwā-s, manuels de ḥisba, traités de droit).

This chapter reviews the gradual adoption of Ashʿarism in the pre-modern Islamic west, from its introduction in Ifrīqiyā and parts of central Maghrib by the middle of the tenth century CE, passing through its subsequent propagation to and further development in al-Andalus until its dissemination in the Far Maghrib owing to the joint influence of Ifrīqī and Andalusī theologians. Special emphasis is put in the Almoravids’ contribution to this latter process and the challenges posed by Ibn Tūmart—the leader of the Almohad movement—to the local Mālikī-Ashʿarī establishment.

On a previous occasion I studied the qāḍīship of the whole Andalusi Levant, reaching several conclusions on the functioning of Justice in this area and how the local power controlled the judicial administration in the different towns. This time, we are going to assay how the Almoravid judicial politics that were applied in the Levant affected Alcira’s qāḍīship. For this reason, this contribution will address two main aspects. On the one hand it will make a brief analysis of the historical information offered by the Arabic sources in order to see how it is presented and, above all, to study the political evolution of the city and its role in the possible judicial and administrative changes that had occurred during the period extending from the end of the Taifas until the end of the Almoravid periods. On the other hand, it will analyze the composition of the judicial administration of Alcira with the aim of studying probable changes in the Almoravid period.
