Medieval Muslim Christian Relations

Partindo de uma leitura da "História do Patriarcado Copta de Alexandria", crônica oficial desta instituição, este trabalho tem por objetivo reconstituir, de forma sinóptica, o funcionamento econômico da Igreja Copta nos estágios iniciais do Egito islâmico – ou seja, desde a conquista do Vale do Nilo pelos árabes, em 641, até as vésperas da tomada da região pelos fatímidas, em 969. No âmbito de tal reconstituição, deu-se especial atenção às assimétricas interações econômicas entre o governo islâmico e a comunidade cristã egípcia, e às estratégias de arrecadação praticadas pelos diferentes tipos de profissionais vinculados à Igreja Copta – tais como monges, bispos, clérigos casados e patriarcas. Espera-se que o texto contribua para a elaboração de uma futura história comparada da administração eclesiástica na Antiguidade Tardia e no Medievo.

The article examines relations between Christian monastics (firstly Copts and then Franciscans) and Muslims in Egypt during the Mamlūk period (c. 13–14th centuries), concentrating in particular on the controverted and changing status of monastics according to various Islamic legal sources. The questions debated by jurists were especially economic: the taxation of monastics, the ability of Christians generally to set up endowments for broadly social-charitable but not explicitly religious purposes, and the Christian use of lands conquered by Muslims. These questions grew more complex with the arrival of Franciscan mendicants, whose pattern of life did not follow the more stable and residential forms of monastic life common in Coptic practice. Ibn Taymiyya’s Fatwā on monks is analyzed closely, aided by the author’s translation of the same at the end of the article, to shed light on why relatively wealthy Christian endowments were, from 1354 onward, widely confiscated.

In the face of crusades, conversions, and expulsions, Muslims and their communities survived to thrive for over 500 years in medieval Europe. This comprehensive new study explores how the presence of Islamic minorities transformed Europe in everything from architecture to cook- ing, literature to science, and served as a stimulus for Christian society to define itself. Combining a series of regional studies, Brian Catlos com- pares the varied experiences of Muslims across Iberia, Southern Italy, the Crusader Kingdoms, and Hungary to examine those ideologies that informed their experiences, their place in society, and their sense of themselves as Muslims and as members of multi-confessional societies. This is a pioneering new narrative of the history of medieval and early modern Europe from the perspective of Islamic minorities; one which is not, as we might first assume, driven by ideology, isolation, and decline, but instead one in which successful communities persisted because they remained actively integrated within the larger Christian and Jewish soci- eties in which they lived.

O presente texto objetiva tecer uma reflexão sobre certos lugares-comuns na historiografia ocidental sobre a trajetória do cristianismo e seu relacionamento com o Islã, partindo da discussão a respeito das narrativas sobre a conquista árabe do Egito (639-641). Em primeiro lugar, evidencia a contingência da versão agora mais conhecida entre nós a respeito deste evento. A seguir, realiza o cotejo desta com a memória copta do mesmo acontecimento, conforme esta foi registrada na vita do Patriarca Benjamin de Alexandria (r.622-661). Chama atenção para os vínculos entre categorias de descrição histórica e de classificação religiosa, fundamentais para se entender a forma como se constituíram as diferentes narrativas do estabelecimento do Islã no Vale do Nilo e a relação de seus adeptos com os cristãos dessa região.

In 1145–1146, Sayf al-Dawla returned to al-Andalus to create an independent kingdom and return the Banū Hūd of Zaragoza to prominence. His task was a difficult one, not least because he’d spent a decade serving the Christian king Alfonso VII. After a year of campaigning, Sayf al-Dawla secured a base of support in Murcia. However, he died shortly after his coronation in a battle with Christian allies who were allegedly sent by Alfonso to help him. In addition to providing an explanation for the battle and his death, the article examines how Sayf al-Dawla promoted the legitimacy of his state through his coinage, adherence to Andalusī traditions, and a network of fellow exiles. It interprets the Zaragozan tā’ifa as a moveable faction rather than a fixed geographical entity and connects Sayf al-Dawla’s kingdom to later movements to demonstrate how his actions preserved the Banū Hūd’s prestige in Andalusī imaginations.

Em algum momento da segunda metade do século VII ou do início do século VIII, Agatão, padre e monge, deixou seus mestres espirituais no Mosteiro de São Macário de Sceté para, seguindo o exemplo de São Simeão, o Estilita, passar o resto de sua vida sobre uma coluna. Tendo introduzido este novo tipo de ascese no Egito, realizou curas e milagres e morreu reconhecido como santo. Pouquíssimos dados sobreviveram a seu respeito, dos quais os principais constam no texto que o Sinaxário Copta traz no dia da comemoração de sua morte. O objetivo deste artigo é realizar uma leitura deste encômio e de alguns documentos conexos para, buscando reconstituir algumas das relações que aí se evidenciam, tecer considerações sobre as formas da vida monástica e da dissidência eclesial entre os cristãos coptas na fase inicial do domínio islâmico do Egito.

Apresentação introdutória da figura de Jesus de Nazaré no Corão e na tradição islâmica, com ênfase especial para seu papel no processo de interação entre cristãos e muçulmanos ao fim do primeiro milênio da era cristã. Jesus de Nazaré é um personagem eminente no Corão, na espiritualidade, na escatologia e no folclore islâmicos, que o consideram como profeta, atribuindo-lhe os títulos de Messias e Palavra de Deus, mas negando que seja Deus ou Filho de Deus, ou que tenha sofrido a morte na cruz. As principais fontes de informação a seu respeito no interior da tradição islâmica são as menções que lhe são feitas no Corão e as parábolas e ditos que se lhe atribuem em várias obras de exegese, jurisprudência e história produzidas em contextos muçulmanos. Este curso objetiva fazer uma apresentação sinóptica de como Jesus é figurado no Islã, perguntando-se sobre as fontes desta imagem e sobre o seu papel no processo inicial de interação entre cristãos e muçulmanos.

This article contributes to the study of Christian Arabic literature by providing an introduction and English translation of the treatise entitled Kayfiyyat idrāk ḥaqīqat al-diyāna, ‘On how to discern the truth of religion’, by the prominent Baghdad-based Nestorian physician, scholar and translator, Ḥunayn b. Isḥāq (808-873). This work constitutes a defence of Christianity in a multi-religious milieu marked by the ascendency of Islam. Ḥunayn discusses therein the reasons that lead people to adhere to a particular religion, his main contention being that the truth or falsity of any religion can be ascertained by examining the reasons why it was originally accepted.

U članku se objavljuju prva povijesna i književnopovijesna analiza te transliteracija kasnosrednjovjekovnoga teksta ot er(u)s(o)l(i)ma i groba b(o)žiê čt(enie) koji je zapisan u Vinodolskom zborniku (Zagreb: Arhiv HAZU, sign. III a 15). Posrijedi je jedini zasad poznati hrvatski srednjovjekovni itinerar po Svetoj zemlji, koji je vjerojatno bio sastavljen na temelju nepoznata latinskoga ili romanskoga teksta. Obrazlaže se hipoteza prema kojoj hrvatskoglagoljski itinerar nije bio zamišljen kao praktičan hodočasnički vodič, nego kao poučan tekst namijenjen učvršćivanju »kolektivnoga pamćenja« o Svetoj zemlji kao prostoru na koji kršćani imaju isključivo pravo. Osim toga, iznosi se hipoteza da je hrvatskoglagoljski itinerar mogao biti namijenjen razmatranju povijesti Spasenja u obliku virtualnoga hodočašća.

[The article presents the first edition and literary and historical analysis of a text »ot er(u)s(o)l(i)ma i groba b(o)žiê čt(enie)« [The Reading on Jerusalem and God's Sepulchre] which is preserved in a late medieval Glagolitic codex known as the Vinodol miscellany (Zagreb: Archives of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts, sign. III a 15). The text is identified as a member of the genre of medieval itineraria and it is the only known medieval itinerary around the Holy Land written in the Croatian language. While the direct source of the Croatian texts has not been found, a few idiosyncratic toponyms point to the conclusion that the Croatian writer was using a Latin or a Romance source. The itinerary scripts the pilgrimage from the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem to Hebron, where the creation of Adam was to be commemorated, and I argue that the pilgrims' progression through the sites could have been envisaged as the commemoration of the history of salvation in reverse order. Given that the text barely mentions the existing Muslim presence in the Holy Land, it can be concluded that it was unlikely to be used as a practical guide for a real pilgrimage. A further support for this conclusion comes from the introduction of the itinerary in a codex between various texts which were written for the purpose of religious instruction. I argue that the Croatian itinerary could have been written as an instructive text which was meant to promote the Western construct of the Holy Land as a sacred area to which the Christians have the exclusive right. Furthermore, I suggest that the itinerary could have been primarily used as a script for a meditative religious devotion in the form of a virtual pilgrimage.]

No tempo do governo eclesiástico do Papa Simão de Alexandria (689-701), um "sacerdote do povo das Índias" apresentou-se em sua corte pedindo que lhe ordenasse um bispo para sua comunidade de origem. O fato de o patriarca estar submetido ao governo muçulmano, mas não seu visitante estrangeiro, contudo, impediu que o caso tivesse uma solução simples. O objetivo deste trabalho é, partindo deste episódio, tecer algumas considerações a respeito de como se deu o fechamento do horizonte índico das missões e relações eclesiásticas da Igreja Ortodoxa Copta, ainda antes do primeiro século de domínio árabe muçulmano no Egito.

In Late Antiquity, ethno-religious diversity emerged as a defining feature of the Mediterranean, a region set at the conjunction of Europe, Africa and Western Asia, and home to Hellenism and the Abrahamic religions. As a consequence of environmental, geographic, and historical factors, societies developed in which an array of dominations of Muslims, Christians and Jews lived together. While ideological currents mitigated for the marginalization and segregation of minorities, pragmatism demanded flexibility in ethno-religious relations. In the common Mediterranean environment minority and majority groups in both Christian and Islamic developed similar strategies and approaches vis-à-vis ethno-religious, and whereas repression and violence against minorities occurred in certain circumstances, generally accommodation of subject out-groups was the rule. These conditions persisted into the early Modern Period, when the emergence of notions of race and national identity provoked a reconfiguration of ethno-religious relations through much of the region.

É um relativo consenso entre os especialistas que o período de governo fatímida do Egito (969-1171), foi, com a exceção de curtos intervalos, provavelmente o mais tranquilo e próspero para os judeus e cristãos desde a conquista islâmica do Vale do Nilo até a Contemporaneidade. Esta era de ouro para a Dhimmah, entretanto, não se deveu a alguma excepcional tolerância desta dinastia xiita, mas pode ser considerada como um dos resultados fortuitos da complexa conjuntura política do Egito e do Levante no interior do ecúmeno islâmico dos séculos IX e X AD. O objetivo deste paper é reconstituir algumas das tramas que compuseram esta conjuntura, usando, neste horizonte, a trajetória dos cristãos coptas como uma espécie de estudo de caso.

De 734 a 741 AD, al-Qasim ibn Ubaydallâh governou o Egito, então uma parte do califado omíada. Durante este período, manteve uma política ao mesmo tempo de proximidade e de agressividade para com os cristãos coptas, caracterizada pela execução daquilo que bem poderiam ser chamados de ritos de humilhação destes. Esse governo e esse relacionamento foram registrados principalmente na História do Patriarcado Copta de Alexandria, crônica oficial desta comunidade religiosa, o que possui importantes consequências cognitivas. Este artigo objetiva retomar a narrativa desta interação de forma analítica, chamando atenção para alguns dos contextos sociopolíticos e religiosos e dos clichês literários e teológicos que nela se fazem presentes.

In 1266, the kingdom of Murcia lost its status as a semi-independent
protectorate of Castile after the Mudejar Rebellion. This failure
created two Muslim vassal states under the Banū Hūd in Murcia
and the Banū Hudayr at Crevillente. As these Muslim lords
continued in the service of the kings of Castile and Aragon, their
records in royal registers testify to an increasing dependence on
Christian squires as their administrators. The Banū Hūd and the
Banū Hudayr entrusted these Christian agents to manage their
affairs and interact with Christian and Muslim courts, especially in
relaying sensitive information to Aragon about the Granadan
frontier. Although the charters in the Cathedral of Murcia and the
Archive of the Crown of Aragon surrounding the employment of
these squires indicate that they received lands in Murcia for their
service to these failing Muslim houses, other records reveal that
the administrators served without further inducement or
compensation. Furthermore, several Christian administrators
performed their role in ways that allowed the small Muslim states
and their lords to endure into the fourteenth century. This study
of the reciprocal relationships between Muslim lord and Christian
administrator demonstrates how the task of preserving power in
post-conquest Murcia transcended religious boundaries.

De 677 a 686, o papa João III governou a Igreja Copta; tratou-se de um período em que se ajustava um modus vivendi entre os árabes muçulmanos, que haviam entrado como conquistadores no Egito pouco antes, e os cristãos autóctones, divididos de modo então quase inconciliável entre coptas/miafisitas e melquitas/calcedônicos. A consideração de dois (des)encontros entre esse líder religioso e o emir ‘Abd al-‘Aziz evidencia a complexidade da conjuntura do estágio inicial da ocupação muçulmana do Vale do Nilo.

El Cid, Pope Urban II, Reynaud de Châtillon, Saladin. These names ring down the centuries, calling to mind the bloodletting of the early Crusader era. But is there anything more to say about a period that countless historians have pored over? As scholar Brian Catlos reveals, the answer is yes.
Infidel Kings and Unholy Warriors puts us on the ground in the Mediterranean world of 1050-1300. We experience the sights, the sounds, and the smells of the region just as the enlightened Islamic world and primitive Christendom began to contest it. With discussions ranging from siege tactics to theological disputes, and from architecture to poetry, Catlos recasts familiar tales and brings forgotten ones to light. Samuel b. Naghrilla, the would-be Jewish Messiah, bon vivant, and the force behind Muslim Granada; Bahram Pahlavuni, the Armenian general who wielded power over a heretical Islamic caliphate; and Philip of Mahdia, a Muslim eunuch and admiral for Roger II, the Christian “King of Africa” are only a few of the characters who reveal a world in which religion was important but not determinative. Integration was common, as were conflicts between co-religionists. And Crusade and jihad were not causes of war, but justifications.
Then as now, politics were driven by a mix of self-interest, personality, and ideology. Catlos imparts a profound insight: the violence of the past cannot be merely blamed on religion.

Na longa tradição de comentários ocidentais sobre o Vale do Nilo, não foram poucos os autores que sublinharam que a história egípcia, especialmente no que refere às técnicas da sobrevivência e às práticas religiosas, parece compor-se por mais continuidades do que rupturas.Estas, entretanto, estão longe de serem inexistentes, principalmente no âmbito da história política. O Egito do último quarto do século VII, por exemplo, era fundamentalmente diverso daquele de cem anos antes quanto a esse aspecto particular. Uma nova variável político-religiosa surgida no cenário por volta do meado desse intervalo – o Islã – havia feito deslizar de maneira sutil, mas significativa a proximidade entre o espaço de experiência e o horizonte de expectativa dos agentes sociais então sediados no Vale do Nilo. A complexa dialética de continuidade e ruptura implicada nesse processo, somada aos atravessamentos que aí se verificam entre história política e religiosa, parecem-me os mais interessantes. Para tratar dele, partirei de um episódio particularmente complexo, descrito em um parágrafo da vita do Patriarca Agathon de Alexandria, cujo pontificado deu-se de 661 a 677.

Dentre os documentos referentes à história das religiões, talvez os mais negligenciados pelos pesquisadores são aqueles que dizem respeito, em sentido estrito, à oração individual e comunitária. Esses, contudo, nos remetem a questões que tocam o âmago da experiência do homem religioso no mundo. Essa lacuna é ainda mais grave em se tratando dos estudos dos cristianismos orientais, antigas experiências eclesiásticas que, de um modo geral, ainda são praticamente desconhecidas cá entre nós. A coletânea organizada pelos Professores Brouria Bitton-Ashkelony e Derek Krueger sobre a oração na experiência cristã no Mediterrâneo Oriental da Antiguidade Tardia e do Medievo é uma boa introdução ao tema, que pode nos ajudar a romper esse silêncio.
