Medieval scriptoria

Colophons of Armenian manuscripts are replete with yet untapped riches. Formulae are not the least among them: these recurrent stereotypical patterns conceal many clues as to the schools and networks of production and diffusion of books in Armenian communities. This paper proposes a methodology for exploiting these sources, as elaborated in the framework of a Ph.D. research project about Armenian colophon formulae. Firstly, the reader is briefly introduced to the corpus of Armenian colophons and then, to the purposes of our project. In the third place, we describe our methodology, relying on lemmatization and modelling of patterns into automata. Fourthly and finally, the whole process is illustrated by a basic case study, the occasion of which is taken to outline the kind of results that can be achieved by combining this methodology with a philologico-historical approach to colophons.

An essay on disciplinary change, incremental and foundational, with special attention paid to the structures within which knowledge is produced, designed, and disseminated. Within this overall framework, the essay recounts the story of the Stanford Humanities Lab and metaLAB (at) Harvard, while arguing for the virtues of (dislocated) disciplinarity.

Este artigo busca entender os scriptoria enquanto lugar de produção de conhecimento e de mercadorias (manuscritos) na Europa medieval, focando em sua presença nos ambientes monásticos, assim como no ofício dos monges, freiras e copistas profissionais. Partindo do pressuposto de que o scriptorium estava presente naqueles ambientes que deram condições à sua existência, ou seja, cortes e monastérios que contavam com bibliotecas e um número de pessoas suficiente para a produção, nos deparamos com nosso problema de pesquisa: "seria o caso dos scriptoria monásticos um caso onde o espaço disciplina uma prática?". A ser resolvido através de discussões sobre a relação entre lugar e espaço, trabalho e produto, assim como a disciplina e sua manifestação no ofício dos monges copistas.
