Genetic analyses were performed on the progeny of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) sampled in natural redds of three rivers flowing into the Bay of Biscay, the Nivelle, the Mandeo and the Sella. These rivers are at the southern limit of the European distribution of the species and their populations are small and endangered by human activities. Nine variable number of tandem repeat (VNTR) loci (five minisatellites and four microsatellites) were used for parentage analysis. Multiple male participation was recognized in the fertilization of eggs. A large proportion was fertilized by precociously mature parr. We demonstrate that multiple paternity derived from mature parr is crucial for the conservation of genetic variability in small populations of Atlantic salmon.

Without genetic tests of parentage, descriptions of mating systems must be considered hypothetical. Here we confirm the existence of cooperative polyandry in the Galapagos hawk (Buteo galapagoensis) using multilocus minisatellite DNA fingerprinting. In this species, breeding groups consist of one adult female and from one to eight males (the modal number of males is two). In polyandrous groups, all males

Spalax ehrenbergi is a species complex of blind subterranean rodents distributed along the east Mediterranean region. We studied genetic relationships within and between S. ehrenbergi sib families using microsatellite genotyping. The upper-bound level of multiple-paternity rate in litters was estimated using a simulation model of breeding process. Our results show that the upper bound of multiple paternity in the studied population of S. ehrenbergi is <30% (P value 2.9%), with no detected cases of multiple paternity. Our analytical model was specifically designed for a situation in which the sibling identities are known but genetic data about their parents is unavailable. The genetic similarities between groups of individuals were also tested, and it was found that the distance between breeding nests is a factor influencing the genetic similarity between litters found in the nests.
