Mammography is the primary and most reliable technique for detection of breast cancer. Mammograms are examined for the presence of malignant masses and indirect signs of malignancy such as micro calcifications, architectural distortion and bilateral asymmetry. However, Mammograms are X-ray images taken with low radiation dosage which results in low contrast, noisy images. Also, malignancies in dense breast are difficult to detect due to opaque uniform background in mammograms. Hence, techniques for improving visual screening of mammograms are essential. Image enhancement techniques are used to improve the visual quality of the images. This paper presents the comparative study of different pre-processing techniques used for enhancement of mammograms in mini-MIAS data base. Performance of the image enhancement techniques is evaluated using objective image quality assessment techniques. They include simple statistical error metrics like PSNR and human visual system (HVS) feature based metrics such as SSIM, NCC, UIQI, and Discrete Entropy

The present paper was written as a contribution to ongoing methodological debates within the NCC project. We focus on the neural correlates of conscious perceptual episodes. Our claim is that the NCC notion, as applied to conscious perceptual episodes, needs to be reconceptualized. It mixes together the processing related to the perceived contents and the neural substrate of consciousness proper, i.e. mechanisms making the perceptual contents conscious. We thus propose that the perceptual NCC be divided into two constitutive subnotions. The main theoretical idea that emerges as a consequence of this reconceptualization is that the neural correlate of a perceptual episode is formed in the neural interaction between content-processing and consciousness-conferring mechanisms. The paper elaborates this distinction, marshals some initial arguments in its favour, and tests it against some of the most debated theories of consciousness.

The structure of a Digital Phase Locked Loop (DPLL) based systems for dealing with Nakagami-m fading is proposed here. The emphasis of the work is the implementation of the essential components of a DPLL for better reception of signals with certain modulation transmitted through Nakagami-m channels. A sixth order polynomial fitting algorithm for better phase-frequency detection has been implemented, which has helped to attain optimum performance of DPLL. The results of simulation of the proposed DPLL with Nakagami-m fading and QPSK modulation shows that the proposed method provides better performance than existing systems of similar type.

Policy-based management is considered an effective approach to address the challenges of resource management in large complex networks. Within the IU-ATC QoS Frameworks project, a policy-based network management framework, CNQF (Converged Networks QoS Framework) is being developed aimed at providing context-aware, end-to-end QoS control and resource management in converged next generation networks. CNQF is designed to provide homogeneous, transparent QoS control over heterogeneous access technologies by means of distributed functional entities that co-ordinate the resources of the transport network through policy-driven decisions. In this paper, we present a measurement-based evaluation of policy-driven QoS management based on CNQF architecture, with real traffic flows on an experimental testbed. A Java based implementation of the CNQF Resource Management Subsystem is deployed on the testbed and results of the experiments validate the framework operation for policy-based QoS management of real traffic flows.

Present research has been conducted to examine the customer satisfaction on service quality of selected commercial banks of Nepal. The study has employed descriptive research design and quantitative study by using survey methodology to deal with customer satisfaction in the context of Nepalese commercial banks. In this study, the data collected through questionnaire from 65 respondents (out of 100 customers of commercial banks) has been used for analysis. A detail study has been done on the basis of five dimensions as suggested by Parasuraman, Zeithamal and Berry (1988). They are reliability, responsiveness, assurance, empathy and tangibles. The result of the study indicated that the overall customers are satisfied with service quality of the commercial banks. Hence the level of customer satisfaction of the commercial banks on the basis of service quality can be considered satisfactory.NCC JournalVol. 3, No. 1, 2018, Page: 121-133

This study relates cross-sectional differences in stock prices of Nepalese commercial banks to the underlying behavior of six fundamental variables: earnings per share, book value per share, cash dividend per share, stock dividend per share, price earnings ratio, and firm size. This study uses secondary sources of data. The balanced panel data from commercial banks including 150 observations are used for the period of 2000-2014. The earnings per share and stock dividend per share are the more significant determinants of stock prices of commercial banks in Nepal. The performance of the stock dividend is especially noteworthy; this variable is statistically and economically the most important of the six fundamental variables investigated.NCC JournalVol. 3, No. 1, 2018, page: 44-64

Increasing demands of ubiquitous services in wireless networks and evolution towards heterogeneous solutions has driven the necessity of developing efficient QoS aware vertical handoff (handoff between different networks) mechanisms. This paper proposes a QoS aware fuzzy rule based vertical handoff mechanism that makes a multi-criteria based decision, found to be effective for meeting the requirements of different applications. The QoS parameters considered are available bandwidth, end-to-end delay, jitter, and bit error rate (BER). A new evaluation model is proposed using a non birth-death Markov chain, in which the states correspond to the available networks. Simulation results show that compared to other vertical handoff algorithms, the proposed algorithm gives better performance for different traffic classes.

Most studies on corporate governance recognize endogeneity in the nexus between corporate governance and financial performance. Little attention has, however, been paid to the direction of causality between the two phenomena, and hence the Vector Error Correction (VEC) model, which allows for endogenous determination of the direction of causality, has not been widely employed. This study fills that gap by estimating the nexus and the direction of causality using the VEC model to analyze panel data on selected listed firms in Nigeria. The results agree with the findings of most previous studies that corporate governance significantly affects financial performance. Board skills, board composition and management skills enhanced financial performance indicators – return on equity (ROE), return on asset (ROA) and net profit margin (NPM); in many occasions, significantly. Board size and audit committee size did not, and can actually undermine financial performance. More importantly, finan...

Is consciousness based in prefrontal circuits involved in cognitive processes like thought, reasoning, and memory or, alternatively, is it based in sensory areas in the back of the neocortex? The no-report paradigm has been crucial to this debate because it aims to separate the neural basis of the cognitive processes underlying post-perceptual decision and report from the neural basis of conscious perception itself. However, the no-report paradigm is problematic because, even in the absence of report, subjects might engage in post-perceptual cognitive processing. Therefore, to isolate the neural basis of consciousness, a no-cognition paradigm is needed. Here, I describe a no-cognition approach to binocular rivalry and outline how this approach can help resolve debates about the neural basis of consciousness. Acknowledgement: Thanks to

Traditionally message authentication codes (MACs) and the process of encryption are treated as orthogonal security mechanisms, where MACs are used to prove data authenticity while encryption is used to preserve confidentiality. In this paper we propose to integrate the two in a framework where the parameterized hash value of an encrypted image is designed to be the same as the hash value of the parent unencrypted original image. This form of privacy preserving authentication has applications in database searches containing sensitive files such as sets of patient's X-ray records. The main challenge here is to develop a parametric hashing algorithm that is invariant to encryption by allowing a small part of the statistical signature of the original image to emerge despite the encryption process. Since the hash value is computed without decrypting the original data, one can prove authenticity without actually revealing the information. Our contribution is twofold: (1) Formulation of this new problem of authenticating encrypted data and (2) Development of a simple hashing algorithm applicable to encrypted images.

A number of influential theories posit that visual awareness relies not only on the initial, stimulus-driven (i.e., feedforward) sweep of activation but also on recurrent feedback activity within and between brain regions. These theories of awareness draw heavily on data from masking paradigms in which visibility of one stimulus is reduced due to the presence of another stimulus. More recently transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) has been used to study the temporal dynamics of visual awareness. TMS over occipital cortex affects performance on visual tasks at distinct time points and in a manner that is comparable to visual masking. We draw parallels between these two methods and examine evidence for the neural mechanisms by which visual masking and TMS suppress stimulus visibility. Specifically, both methods have been proposed to affect feedforward as well as feedback signals when applied at distinct time windows relative to stimulus onset and as a result modify visual awareness. Most recent empirical evidence, moreover, suggests that while visual masking and TMS impact stimulus visibility comparably, the processes these methods affect may not be as similar as previously thought. In addition to reviewing both masking and TMS studies that examine feedforward and feedback processes in vision, we raise questions to guide future studies and further probe the necessary conditions for visual awareness.
