Nekyia

Aristophanic comedy combines the materials of popular fantasy with keen, well-targeted satire and criticism of the major political issues of the Athenian state. The Birds can be read as an open parable which illustrates caustically the imperialism of Athenian democracy. Nephelokokkygia, the fantastic city of the birds in mid-air, is in essence a projection of the radical and imperialistic Athens onto the heterotopia of the aerial realm. The comedy was performed while the Sicilian expedition was in full progress, and the Athenian dēmos expected to conquer the entire western Mediterranean. The phantasmagorical polis of the birds, which finally subdues the gods and the men and triumphantly dominates over the universe, looks like a magnificent and grotesque parody of the irrepressible ambitions of Athenian imperialism. As happens with all worthy works of fantastic literature (e.g. the novels of J.R.R. Tolkien), the mythopoeia of the literary creation is an autonomous construct of the imagination, a complete and self-existent secondary world, which does not need reference to external coordinates of meaning. However, behind this self-reliant fantastic creation, one may discern —if one wishes to, and on one’s own hermeneutical responsibility— a general connection with the historical circumstances of the author’s age and milieu.

In the Frogs, similarly, the Hades explored by Dionysus has many similarities with the city of Athens under the dire conditions at the end of the Peloponnesian War, shortly before the final defeat. The Frogs is the only known ancient comedy in which the action is mostly set in the realm of the underworld. The beleaguered Athens of 405/4 BCE, tantalized by the constant fear of defeat and destruction, had come to resemble a city of the dead; Hades seemed to have been transplanted in the agora and the streets of the city. With Aristophanes’ play, Hades also comes to occupy the orchestra of the theatre. Through this brilliant and bitter comedy, Aristophanes attempts to transmit a message of unity and patriotism to his audience: Athens, in order to survive, needs to find again the spirit of courage, self-sacrifice and concord that characterized the city at the time of the Persian Wars. Hence the choice of the warlike and patriotic Aeschylus over the subtle and intellectual Euripides: Dionysus may personally prefer the sophisticated drama of the latter, but has the duty to select a poet in accordance with the public needs and interests of the polis.

Aristophanes’ messages do not seem to have had much effect in practical terms. Athenian imperialism did not abate; the city was not saved. But his great works of dramatic art have lasted through time.

Από τους τέσσερεις-πέντε αρχετυπικούς μυθικούς κύκλους, που εμπνέουν διαχρονικά την ποιητική φαντασία των λαών σύμφωνα με τις τυπολογίες των ειδικών (Μπόρχες, Νόρθροπ Φράι), τρείς τουλάχιστον έχουν βαθιές ρίζες στην αρχαία ελληνική παράδοση και καθοριστική σημασία για τη συγκρότηση της ποιητικής μυθολογίας του Σεφέρη. Ο μεγάλος πόλεμος (θέμα της Ιλιάδας) ιστορείται όχι με τρόπο επικό και ηρωικό αλλά από σκοπιά τραγική: ο ποιητής εστιάζει στη μοίρα των θυμάτων, των αιχμαλώτων και των αμάχων, στην οδύνη και στην καταστροφή. Το μακρινό και περιπετειώδες ταξίδι (θέμα του Οδυσσέα, του Σεβάχ και του Μεγαλέξανδρου της Φυλλάδας) αποτελεί τον κεντρικό άξονα ολόκληρου του σεφερικού έργου. Ο ταξιδιώτης περιπλανιέται σε παράξενους τόπους σε βορρά και νότο, αντιμετωπίζει εξωτικά, αλλόκοτα ή τερατώδη θεάματα, βασανίζεται, αλλά βιώνει και πρόσκαιρες εμπειρίες παραδείσιας ευτυχίας. Ο περιπλανώμενος ήρωας του Σεφέρη μοιάζει κατεξοχήν με τον Οδυσσέα του Δάντη, ο οποίος με τη σειρά του κατάγεται από την προομηρική παράδοση: νοσταλγεί μιαν ειδυλλιακή πατρίδα, όταν όμως επιστρέφει εκεί, ο τόπος του αποδεικνύεται στενός και γεμάτος απογοητεύσεις, ανίκανος να τον κρατήσει· ο ταξιδευτής αναγκάζεται να ξαναρχίσει τις περιπλανήσεις, για να γλυτώσει από το αίσθημα του πνιγμού.

Η πορεία του ταξιδιού κορυφώνεται (όπως στην Οδύσσεια και στη Φυλλάδα) με τη Νέκυια, την κατάβαση στον κόσμο των νεκρών, πεμπτουσία κάθε περιηγητικού μύθου. Ο ταξιδιώτης αντικρίζει τις τυφλές ψυχές που λιμνάζουν στο λίμπο, τους καταδικασμένους που παγιδεύονται στην αιώνια επανάληψη ή μεταμορφώνονται σε άψυχη ύλη. Όμως συναντάει και αφουγκράζεται μια μαγική καθοδηγητική μορφή (Τειρεσία, Πρωτέα, Σωκράτη), που του χαρίζει γνώση και δύναμη για να συνεχίσει. Συναφής είναι ο μύθος της αναζήτησης (quest, θέμα των Αργοναυτών και του ιερού Γκράαλ), η οποία παρακινεί τις περιπλανήσεις και τις περιπέτειες του ήρωα. Στη μυθολογία του Σεφέρη η αναζήτηση στοχεύει σε κάποιο είδος μυστικής εμπειρίας, ερωτικής ή πνευματικής, η οποία ανανεώνει την ύπαρξη (όπως κάνει παραδοσιακά το αντικείμενο της αναζήτησης στους θρύλους, το Γκράαλ, το βότανο του Γιλγαμές, το αθάνατο νερό του Μεγαλέξανδρου ή το καζάνι της Μήδειας). Το επίμοχθο δρομολόγιο της αναζήτησης περιλαμβάνει πολλά πισωγυρίσματα και ατυχίες, όπως όταν οι ιππότες-Αργοναύτες βρίσκουν το κάστρο της Ασίνης έρημο και τον βασιλιά μεταμορφωμένο σε νυχτερίδα. Εντέλει, όμως, ο επίμονος ήρωας αξιώνεται να αντικρίσει το ποθητό αντικείμενο στην καθαρότερη μορφή του, εκείνην του φωτός — από τη μικρή φλόγα όπου προσηλώνεται ο νεαρός Στρατής Θαλασσινός ώς τη φωταψία στο φινάλε της Κίχλης.

En Percy Jackson y la batalla del laberinto de Rick Riordan se reelaboran y ac-tualizan algunos de los elementos compositivos de la Nékyia del canto 11 de la Odisea. En el presente artículo realizamos un análisis comparativo sobre la manera en la que el autor ha adaptado, en los pasajes dedicados a las dos evocaciones realizadas por Nico (capítulos 5 y 10), la ambientación de la Nékyia homérica y algunos de sus motivos más característicos como el del temor del protagonista ante las almas, el rechazo de estas con la espada y el intento de abrazo del protagonista a un difunto querido. De esta manera se han conseguido acomodar elementos de la épica a una novela fantástica ambientada en la época moderna, lo que los hace más atractivos para el público joven al que va dirigida la obra.


In Percy Jackson and the Battle of the Labyrinth by Rick Riordan some of the compositional elements of the Nekyia of Odyssey 11 are reworked and updated. In this paper we present a comparative analysis of the way in which the author has adapted, in the passages devoted to the two summonings made by Nico (Chapters 5 and 10), the setting of Homer's Nekyia and some of its most characteristic motifs such as the protagonist's fear of the souls, the rejection of them with the sword and the attempted hug to a beloved deceased by the hero. In this way he has managed to accommodate elements of epic in a fantastic novel set in modern times, which makes them more appealing to the young audience the work is directed to.

En el canto undécimo de "La Odisea", el poeta describe detalladamente el ritual mediante el cual Odiseo evoca el alma del vate Tiresias en el Reino de los Muertos. Dicho ritual probablemente se llevará a cabo en el "Nekromanteion" de Éfira, pero la precisión de la descripción del rito, tal vez, nos muestre una práctica continuada de la necromancia en el ámbito helénico.

Abstract
One of the most famous scenes of the Nekyia is Odysseus’ encounter with the soul of Achilles, who relates his desolate vision of Hades to him (11.488-491). His attitude changes significantly when Odysseus tells him of his son’s remarkable feats: full of joy, Achilles marches away over the Meadow of Asphodels with long strides (11.538-540). This unusual expression of happiness, which recalls the vigour of the warriors in the Iliad, is found in texts of the mystery cults to express the dead’s impatience to reach bliss in Hades (in the Orphic lamellae) or the joyous dances in the meadows enjoyed by the initiates (in Aristophanes’ Frogs).

Resumen
Una de las escenas más célebres de la Nekyia es el encuentro de Odiseo con el alma de Aquiles, que le manifiesta su desolada visión del Hades (11.488-491). Muy distinta es su actitud cuando Odiseo le cuenta las hazañas de su hijo: lleno de gozo, Aquiles se va dando zancadas por el prado de asfódelos (11.538-540). Esta inusual expresión de alegría, que recuerda el ímpetu de los guerreros en la Ilíada, se encuentra en textos mistéricos para expresar la impaciencia del difunto por llegar a la dicha del Hades (en laminillas órficas) o las danzas jubilosas en los prados que disfrutan los iniciados (en las Ranas de Aristófanes).

The paper advances a new interpretation of the proverb τοὐπὶ τῇ φακῇ μύρον (“the perfume in the lentil-soup”) as attested in Sopater’s single surviving fragment from his play "Nekyia", where it is used to satirically describe Odysseus. Sopater’s tiny fragment (one line and a half) reveals a mere, albeit strong, satirical tone towards Odysseus; yet, the essence of this satire is left entirely unexplained. Instead of the common view that the proverb presently conveys a notion of incongruity (as it does in other texts), the paper argues that here we need to allow for (if not implement) an alternative interpretation, that of hedonism.
The argument in favour of this new interpretation is based on a number of ancient testimonies (including Aristotle’s) regarding both the proverb itself (provenance and gloss) and the later reception and misconstruing of Odysseus’ figure as a hedonist (as attested in ancient scholia on Homer, Athenaeus, and the comic tradition).

La profecía de Tiresias anuncia a Odiseo un viaje tierra adentro  que debe cumplir con tal de que encuentre un viajante que confunda su remo con un bieldo, siendo este hecho  el  hito  que  marque  el  lugar  dondeOdiseo  debe  aplacar  a  Poseidón  con  una “trittía” o una “suovetaurilia”.Sobre  este  viaje  hay  pocos  rastros  en  la  literatura  griega  antigua,  pero  los comentaristas medievales, que consultaron obras actualmente perdidas, nos aportan una información muy importante a través de los escolios, reflexionando sobre el significado de palabras que habían sido escritas muchos siglos antes y citando autores hoy perdidos.
