Nicolas Schöffer

Autor charakteryzuje w swoim artykule kolejno pojęcie nowych mediów, sztuki nowych mediów, oraz sztuki cybernetycznej, która jest tu postrzegana jako historycznie pierwsza postać sztuki nowych mediów, posiadająca zarazem liczne kontynuacje we współczesności. Pojęcie nowych mediów autor ujmuje nie poprzez ulokowane go na linii czasu lecz jako paradygmatyczny zespół właściwości, z których nowe media korzystają. Najważniejsze z nich, to techniczny charakter, reprezentacja numeryczna, wirtualność, modularność, automatyzacja, wariacyjność, telekomunikacyjność, telematyczność, autonomiczność, cyfrowość, interaktywność, hipertekstualność, wirtualność, informacyjność, sieciowość, nielinearność i orientacja przestrzenna, nawigacyjność, strukturalne otwarcie, hybrydyczność, interfejs, konwergencja. W analogiczny sposób charakteryzowane jest tu pojęcie sztuki nowych mediów. W tym wypadku, z kolei, najważniejszymi paradygmatycznymi właściwościami okazują się techniczny i elektroniczny charakter, cyfrowość, interaktywność i sieciowość. Liczne wyodrębnione przez autora sztuki nowych mediów w zróżnicowany sposób konfigurują wskazane właściwości, łącząc je innymi, niespecyficznymi dla nowych mediów, budując w ten sposób złożony krajobraz sztuk nowomedialnych.

About France and the Visual Arts since 1945:
Taking on the myth of France's creative exhaustion following World War II, this collection of essays brings together an international team of scholars, whose research offers English readers a rich and complex overview of the place of France and French artists in the visual arts since 1945.
Addressing a wide range of artistic practices, spanning over seven decades, and using different methodologies, their contributions cover ground charted and unknown. They introduce greater depth and specificity to familiar artists and movements, such as Lettrism, Situationist International or Nouveau Réalisme, while bringing to the fore lesser known artists and groups, including GRAPUS, the Sociological Art Collective, and Nicolas Schöffer.
Collectively, they stress the political dimensions and social ambitions of the art produced in France at the time, deconstruct the traditional geography of the French art world, and highlight the multiculturalism of the French art scene that resulted from its colonial past and the constant flux of artistic travels and migrations.
Ultimately, the book contributes to a story of postwar art in which France can be inscribed not as a main or sub chapter, but rather as a vector in the wider constellation of modern and contemporary art.

Early uses of computers as artistic means and ends date back to the fifties and sixties. For the pioneers of computer art cybernetics, as the were founded in the forties by Norbert Wiener and Clude Elwood Shannon, were a source of inspiration. Simultaneously to the evolution of kinetic art integrating moving parts into the art object a 'cybernetic art'  arose. Its protagonists developed works reacting to input data and interacting with the environment. "Material models" (N. Wiener) of cybernetics were the forerunners of cybernetic sulptures (Nicolas Schöffer) and responsive environments (Gordon Pask). The cybernetic term information and information aesthetics (Max Bense, Abraham Moles) inspired artists to program computer graphics (Georg Nees, Frieder Nake, Herbert Werner Franke).

Durant une vingtaine d’années, le projet de construction d’une Tour Lumière Cybernétique à Paris a suscité un grand intérêt dans l’opinion publique, dans différents cercles artistiques et scientifiques ainsi que chez de nombreux politiciens et administrateurs. Grandiose, la tour imaginée par l’artiste franco-hongrois Nicolas Schöffer (1912-1992) constituait tout à la fois une œuvre d’art et un média total d’un genre nouveau, capable d’opérer une synthèse des médias de communication de l’époque, mais également d’ajuster et d’équilibrer les activités humaines à l’environnement, qui est considérée comme un média dans tous les sens du terme, c’est-à-dire comme un milieu de vie ainsi qu’en tant que matière artistique à élaborer.  Pour Schöffer, la Tour Lumière Cybernétique constitue l’amorce d’un projet social et politique révolutionnaire. Épicentre de la ville cybernétique, la Tour Schöffer avait pour objectif l’établissement d’une nouvelle forme cybernétique de gouvernement par l’information qui devait pallier les institutions politiques traditionnelles. Mais comment un projet d’une telle envergure et d’une telle ambition a-t-il pu susciter un tel engouement, notamment de la part de la classe politique? Retour sur une utopie oubliée.

La galleria Studio Farnese si affaccia al panorama artistico romano nel febbraio del 1969 in piazza Farnese 50. Lo spazio, fondato da Maria Di Lella Alfani (1917-2006), donna intelligente colta e intraprendente, sicuramente anticipatrice di quel rinnovamento che stava per scoppiare in quegli anni, era dinamico ed eterogeneo e si apriva a scambi intellettuali tra protagonisti di diverse discipline. Maria Di Lella Alfani visse tra Roma e Parigi, dove risiedette per quattordici anni, e durante quell’esperienza rimase affascinata dalle possibilità estetiche, dalle illusioni ottiche e dal concept avanguardistico delle opere presentate in occasione della mostra “Le Mouvement” allestita nel 1955 nella sua galleria di Parigi, dall’intelligente e innovativa Denise René (1913-2012), alla quale si deve la consacrazione dell’arte cinetica.

Recependo l’interesse polivalente dell’arte cinetica ad accogliere i condizionamenti della scienza e di altre discipline, Maria Di Lella Alfani, si propone di realizzare nei suoi progetti  nella galleria Studio Farnese, “incontri interdisciplinari tra artisti, architetti, critici, psichiatri, biologi e musicisti”, per la preparazione dei quali, intrattiene un fitto scambio  epistolare e intellettuale con Denise Renè  fino ad inaugurare la galleria Studio Farnese, il 7 febbraio del 1969, con una mostra su Nicholas Schoffer, artista che vinse il Gran Premio della critica alla Biennale di Venezia del 1968. La mostra ebbe grande risonanza mediatica e fu ripresa da gran parte della stampa quotidiana e televisiva dell’epoca italiana ed estera.

La concezione del fenomeno artistico inquadrato nella dimensione urbana, guiderà i passi successivi della programmazione della galleria, in particolare nelle mostre in cui sceglierà di accostare i progetti di architettura alle opere di artisti plastici contemporanei, come fu nel caso delle mostre dedicate a Paola Levi Montalcini, Paolo Portoghesi e Vittorio Gigliotti (1969),Saverio Busiri Vici e Attilio Lunardi (1970); Igino Legnaghi e Tommaso e Gilberto Valle (1970) e il coinvolgimento di Bruno Munari in un’esposizione del 1969 e la collaborazione con l’Industria Ceramica C.A.V.A.

Nel 1972 la galleria chiuderà per motivi che non sono emersi, nonostante l’attento e partecipato interesse ricevuto da architetti, artisti, istituzioni e personaggi del panorama artistico romano.
