The study is about Tanzanian foreign policy and its participation in conflict resolution. The survey goes back to the 1950’s when Tanganyika’s nationalist leader Julius Nyerere and Ghana’s leader, Kwame Nkrumah led the liberation struggles and promoted the pan-African unity. The main assumption is that over fifty years, the nation’s role and outlook in conflict resolution has remained the same despite changes in circumstances and the shift of emphasis. Tanzania’s participation in conflict resolution is divided into two phases: from the mid 1950’s during decolonisation to the 1990’s when the focus shifted to the Great Lakes Region (GLR) conflicts. The “security” concept as reflected in Tanzania’s traditional response to conflict in Southern Africa has by the early 1990’s evolved to address specific problems in the neighbourhood. This also entailed the regional’s and international community’s response to those problems. Given that Tanzania’s security is connected to that of its immedi...

Triboelectric charge accumulation both poses problems and offers opportunities for dry particulate processing. It generates hazards in many industrial systems, but is exploited in several important applications, including electrophotographic toner charging and triboelectric separation. However, the charging of continuous particulate flows on solid surfaces is poorly understood, and design of devices to optimise triboelectric behaviour is often qualitative or based on trial and error. This study attempts to identify the main charging mechanisms for a continuous particulate flow on a flat surface. The proposed charging models incorporate contact time, velocity and mode of contact. A model incorporating contact area effects arising from sliding and rolling contact is consistent with experimental data, as long as a charge limit is imposed on bouncing particles. A mechanism for this charge limit, involving separation discharge, is proposed. The effect of delocalised image charge on the system is estimated and found to be negligible. Some general design principles are proposed for triboelectric optimisation of particle processing devices.Triboelectrification produces hazards and offers opportunities for dry particle processing. Charging mechanisms for a continuous particulate flow on a flat surface are identified and modelled, for sliding, rolling and bouncing contact. These models are then validated using existing experimental data. Some general design principles are proposed for triboelectric optimisation of particle processing devices.

To enable a better understanding of the relationship between visual communication design or graphic design strategies and the creation of brand identity, embodied in the wine label/package, for Australian Table wines the researcher has created a critical taxonomy of the wine label/package form. The catalyst for the research is the observation that the wine industry is making a considerable investment in the design of labelling and packaging. In response to this situation, this research tests the hypothesis that, the design of wine labelling and packaging plays a significant role in the communication of complex and diverse information about brand values and customer attitudes. As part of the process of testing this hypothesis the research sets out to answer three related questions. The first, what are the dominant elements used in the graphic design of labelling and packaging for the wine industry? The second, what key design strategies are used to develop brand identity? Finally, ho...

In the fourth-century Symphosius wrote a book, which contained one hundred riddles. He even provided the answers to all the riddles. For the majority of the riddles the answers are relatively easy to guess. However, there is one exception, riddle number 96, which reads as follows: "If you this marvel to believe will design, Hold eight upon your hand — I’ll make it plain, Take seven away, and yet will six remain". The answer for this riddle is: “To take VII from VIII and have VI left.” This answer is most perplexing and appears to challenge the very foundations of our knowledge of arithmetic. In the early medieval era it was thought to be interesting or significant enough to be repeated in another book of riddles written by Alcuin in the eighth century. The answer given by Alcuin, and earlier by Symphosius, appears to be more confusing than enlightening. They both state that this riddle is worked out on the hands, which suggests that it is solved through computus digitorum. It has been thought that this riddle is a mnemonic or even a clue to the lost method of calculation with the hands. Both of these seem to be unsatisfactory solutions to its meaning; yet it is a very intriguing riddle. This paper considers this intriguing riddle and proposes a different solution to it.

What is at stake in accounts of ‘prayer’ is reflection on a practice that cannot be readily spoken of free from the most important considerations of God, world, human identity and the shape of its performance. Instead, if prayer “is not to become a harmless game and an endlessly babbling chatter” (Karl Rahner), attention needs to be paid to the god or gods that practices of so-called ‘prayer’ encounter, and it may be that much of what moves in the name of the God of Jesus Christ is, in Barth’s terms, no-god. For Barth not only has the knowledge of the practice of prayer, in a sense, been taken out of our hands in its Christ-grounding, but its Christ-shaped performance involves the determination of Christian life and its self-reflective thought in the pattern of the new life that might be characterised as the properly ordered freedom of self-dispossessing obedience.

This agenda setting text explores a broad range of value perspectives and their impact on and contribution to social work thinking on ethics. Including new perspectives, such as Islam, and drawing on international contributors, this is essential reading for all social work students studying ethics and values.

Aim To engage acute care clinicians in prioritizing professional issues of concern and to help them identify and design change projects. Background In order to meet and respond to challenges and to ensure safety, efficiency and positive patient and staff outcomes, it is imperative to understand the nature of difficulties faced by health professionals and for clinicians to be included in decision making and change.Method A three-phase mixed-method design utilizing descriptive and interpretive approaches. Data were collected via survey, focus groups and nominal group workshops. Results Communication, skill mix and work environments were identified as issues of most concern. Participants were able to identify and prioritize a range of projects to help them better understand and alleviate workplace problems. Conclusion This study highlights key directions for practice change and confirms previous findings identifying urgent need for research that aims to overcome poor communication and skill shortages. It differs from other studies by providing a platform for participants to design projects leading to solutions and participate in change.Implications for nursing management Support must be provided for managers in rostering, staffing, and resource procurement and allocation. The results of the present study highlights a need to refocus management styles on staff empowerment, participation and team building.
