Oriental Orthodox Liturgical Theology

In tutto il mondo dove ci sono i cristiani, ci sono anche chiese e luoghi, in cui le comunità cristiane s'incontrano per lodare Dio. Si può dire che per ogni comunità cristiana avere una chiesa propria significa avere un segno visibile della propria identità. La teologia del luogo del culto viene espressa nell'arco dei secoli in diversi modi ma nel massimo grado la peculiarità dell'edificio sacro cristiano si esprime durante le liturgie ivi celebrate. Proprio esse, sin dall'inizio – con la fondazione e con la dedicazione, rendono l'edificio un luogo d’incontro vivace e il vero cielo sulla terra. I riti prescritti per le celebrazioni legate all'inaugurazione di una chiesa, con drammaturgia e profondità, formano il vero tesoro simbolico del tempio cristiano.

Il nucleo del presente lavoro è l'analisi dei riti presenti nelle tradizioni bizantina e latina. Per raggiungere dei risultati soddisfacenti sono stati adattati due metodi: l'analisi storico-critica (dominante nella parte storica) e l'analisi comparativa (dominante nella parte liturgico-teologica).

Nella prima parte, ci si è concentrati sullo sviluppo storico delle fondazioni e delle dedicazioni di una chiesa. Il primo capitolo presenta la concezione dei luoghi sacri nelle varie comunità umane e religiose. Partendo dalle idee bibliche dei luoghi sacri ed attraversando le testimonianze dei Padri della Chiesa (fino alla pubblicazione dell'editto di Milano), viene spiegata la comune concezione cristiana del senso dell'esistenza dei luoghi sacri e delle relative dedicazioni. Nel secondo capitolo, l'oggetto della ricerca è l'analisi storico-critica dei testi che pian piano, influenzandosi a vicenda, vennero a formare i libri liturgici, arrivando fino alle loro ultime redazioni, che costituiscono il rito. Grazie alla breve presentazione dello svolgimento della fondazione e della dedicazione in ognuno di questi documenti, si possono specificare i punti principali delle celebrazioni. La prima parte del lavoro pone un solido fondamento per poter passare alla seconda, cioè all'analisi comparativa degli odierni rituali della fondazione e della dedicazione di una chiesa in ambedue le tradizioni. Nel terzo capitolo inizia l'analisi dal punto di vista liturgico. Vengono così presentate e paragonate sia le strutture dei riti sia lo svolgimento delle azioni liturgiche (le somiglianze e le differenze nelle celebrazioni sono riportate in tabelle comparative per facilitare la comprensione). Nel quarto capitolo si prosegue con l'analisi comparativa dei testi eucologici nei rituali, chiamati le “preghiere comuni”, perché si riferiscono alle stesse azioni in ambedue le tradizioni. In seguito viene sottolineato il carico teologico presente nei rituali e espresso nella teologia biblica, nei temi trinitari, nella cristologia, nella soteriologia, nell'ecclesiologia e nell'escatologia.

CONCLUSIONI GENERALI
1. L'analisi fatta nel lavoro ha mostrato che le feste delle inaugurazioni delle chiese bizantine e latine affondano le radici nella tradizione veterotestamentaria e non possono distaccarsi da essa. Quantunque la teologia cristiana del tempio sia diversa da quella giudaica, il legame con l'opera di Salomone conferma la continuità della tradizione che dal tempio terrestre conduce i credenti all'escatologico tempio celeste.
2. Gli odierni rituali bizantini e latini, insieme con le azioni specifiche dei riti, non sono stati codificati in uno scriptorium, ma sono il frutto di un lungo percorso liturgico, che spesso si influenzava a vicenda (nei rituali bizantini troviamo influssi latini e gallicani e viceversa). Proprio per questo, nel corso della ricerca si evidenziano numerose somiglianze, la prima delle quali è il tema dominante dei riti: l'implorazione della benedizione divina per il nuovo edificio cultuale.
3. Benché ambedue le tradizioni abbiano interagito tra loro, i riti delle fondazioni e delle dedicazioni delle chiese presentano anche molte differenze. Per esempio i testi bizantini presentano il tempio sopratutto come il “cielo sulla terra”, l'abitazione metafisica dove Dio viene ad incontrare il suo popolo; i testi latini, vedono la chiesa-edificio anzitutto come il luogo dove l'assemblea si raduna per svolgere il culto.
4. L'analisi teologica dei testi eucologici mostra che, trasmettendo sostanzialmente uguali temi teologici, nelle diverse tradizioni si mettono in risalto aspetti diversi degli stessi. Mentre nelle preghiere bizantine dominano i temi veterotestamentari, trinitari ed escatologici, nei testi eucologici latini il primo posto è occupato da temi neotestamentari, cristologici ed ecclesiologici.
5. L'elenco delle diverse domande epicletiche presenti nei testi eucologici e i titolo descriventi il luogo sacro bizantini e latini, considerati insieme, possono creare una definizione comune della chiesa-edificio: “L'edificio del culto cristiano (ἐκκλησία, ecclesia) è una casa (οἶκος) edificata (opus) in onore di Dio, come sua dimora (κατοικία, locus sanctus), per la celebrazione della sua gloria (σκήνωμα δόξης); tale celebrazione si svolge tramite i misteri divini (ναός, templum, ædes) compiuti dalla comunità credente (orationis domum), dalla quale, alla fine, quell'edificio prende anche il nome (ἐκκλησία, ecclesia)”.
6. L'analisi comparativa storico-liturgica che è oggetto del lavoro può avvicinare il lettore alla tematica liturgico-teologica della fondazione e della dedicazione di una chiesa nella tradizione bizantina e latina. Il tema scelto per la ricerca permette di dare uno sguardo abbastanza ampio alla problematica.
7. Il paragone tra le diverse tradizioni liturgiche ha anche scopo ecumenico: in un’epoca di secolarizzazione come la nostra il compito più importante di ogni Chiesa cristiana deve essere quello di insistere nel cercare un dialogo con gli altri per poter dare un'unica testimonianza davanti al mondo contemporaneo. L'analisi comparativa del tesoro liturgico presente in ogni tradizione cristiana, tramite la reciproca comprensione, può aiutare a creare una diversitas reconciliata che porti in futuro ad un vero avvicinamento, necessario per la piena comunione delle Chiese.

The Eucharist is central to Christian doctrine. This may be seen by comparing Oriental Orthodox and Reformed doctrines of the Eucharist.
The Eucharist and debates over it have never simply involved how we speak of the Sacrament in itself. They are always connected to Christological debates as well. This is because our belief about Christ’s Person and Nature lie behind and are revealed in our Eucharistic doctrines.

This inquiry exhausts the Mariological description of St. Gregory Nazianzen, who designates Mary as “prokathartheisa (prepurified).” Gregory likely attempted to solve the riddle of the Purification of Jesus and Mary in the Temple.

Nazianzen's theology is traced to the Palamite Mariological movement. Surprisingly, the Palamite Mariologists gradually applied the term "prepurified" to each image of Mary as she was celebrated in the liturgical calendar. Each celebration from Conception until her First Witness of the Resurrection and Pentecost was a moment of "grace and glory" or prepurification.

I track this title from the 6th Ecumenical Council, Liturgy (e.g. Synodikon of Orthodoxy), and Fathers (e.g., St. Sophronius and St. John Damascene).

Next, Palamas' theological notions of  Marian (pre)purification are uncovered as the solid basis of Mary's privileged status in Palamite theology (e.g., Theophanes, Bryennius, Cabasilas, Mark of Ephesus). Palamism's patristic exegesis manifests an uninterrupted and consistent theological tradition and a steady metaphysical foundation for Mary's absolutely immaculate existence in every single patristic and Palamite author known to use the term. This is due to Mary's ineffable place in divine thought. After providing indications of Nicholas Cabasilas' arguments against Thomistic rejection of the Byzantine doctrine of the prokathartheisa, Byzantine Mariology culminates in the “Pillar of Orthodoxy,” (St.) Mark Eugenicus (1392-1444/5), the last great representative of this unique Byzantine Mariology before the fall of Constantinople.

Mark´s theological constitutes the climactic synthesis of Mary's privileges as προκαθαρθεῖσα (praepurgata) in his apologetic treatise: On the Distinction between Essence and Energy: First Antirrhetic against Manuel Kalekas (c. 1437).

Mark was the unique Father of the Council of Ferrara-Florence (1438-1439) in a position to meet alleged patristic objections to the Immaculate Conception of Latin “maculist” theologians prior to Mark’s arrival in Italy. These Latin debates spilled over into the Byzantine camp during the Council. Byzantines were generally aloof to physico-theological theories of Mary's conception, yet agreed on her unique predestination from the first moment of her divine-mental and natural existence, stemming from her  exalted place among the contingent thoughts within of divine mind. Relying on Palamas, Palamites explicitly linked "prepurification" with the Byzantine liturgical calendar with respect to feasts of the Theotokos, prior to the Incarnation.

Conversely, Latin Scholastics universally erred in their 12-15th century interpretation of Damascene’s designation of Mary as “(pre)purified” at the Annunciation and their "low" Mariologies followed due course. Palamites universally reverenced the prepurified, ergo absolutely immaculate Mary.

I conclude by synthesizing the web of complementarity amid the “prepurified” Virgin, the Ephesine’s Mariology, Franciscan Mariological 14th-15th century parallels, and avenues of development for immaculist theologians who adopt the metaphysical implications of the Theotokos. Scotistic and Palamite metaphysics too verge at a common point of departure with respect to St. Maximus Confessor (in divine psychology and the theology of the Incarnation) to explain the Marian parallel."

This paper seeks to highlight the richness of the Church’s worship in the East and West from the fifth to the ninth century, as well as the unwarranted antagonism that sometimes characterized its factions, through an investigation of the Trisagion or “Thrice-Holy” hymn. Controversy surrounded the Trisagion in the East after the Council of Chalcedon (451) as the rift between those that accepted and rejected the validity of the council steadily widened. While both sides agreed that the hymn was an earthly manifestation of heavenly worship and thus a touchstone of orthodoxy, the accepted meaning of the hymn diverged and ossified on either side: Chalcedonians only addressed the hymn to the Trinity, while non-Chalcedonians only addressed the hymn to Christ. The fierce polemic between these factions, based in the cities of Constantinople and Antioch, respectively, was absent in Egypt, Hispania, and Gaul, where tropings and varied liturgical contexts allowed the spinning out of images of a judging, saving, and, often, crucified Christ in the Trisagion. Vestiges of these images of Christ in Western liturgies suggest that disagreement on the subject of the Trisagion may have been briefly rekindled in the West in the suppression of the Gallican liturgies and their refashioning and reincorporation in the developing Carolingian liturgy. The introduction of the Trisagion into the Carolingian Good Friday Adoration of the Cross ceremony in the late ninth century, with diverse elements accrued from the chant’s history in East and West, may thus be viewed as a small-scale ecumenical synthesis with respect to Christian tradition.

At the climax of the Coptic Great Friday service, the Coptic tradition observes certain ritual practices of a clear physical nature, inviting the bodily participation of those present. These practices are namely a series of one hundred prostrations in each cardinal direction, followed by a seven-fold procession of the cross and burial icon of Christ around the church’s altar and nave. The procession culminates in the “entombment” of this same icon on the altar, covered with rose petals and spices and wrapped in a white cloth. In this article, I explore the phenomenon of bodily participation inherent in these rituals. This is accomplished by analyzing the origins of these rituals in relation to the liturgical traditions of other Eastern Christian communities as well as within the historical development of the Coptic liturgical tradition.

Wie kam es zu einer Entfremdung zwischen Russland und Georgien, zweier Länder desselben chalkedonensisch-orthodoxen Glaubensbekenntnisses, deren kulturelle Verbindungen bis ins Frühmittelalter zurückreichen? Georgische Einflüsse lassen sich bereits am glagolitischen Alphabet der Slawenapostel (9. Jh.) und der altrussischen Nestorchronik (12. Jh.) ablesen. Ebenso alt ist die russische Sehnsucht nach dem georgischen Paradiesgarten, dem Vyrïj-sad, dem Wohnsitz der Seelen der Verstorbenen, wohin die Vögel alljährlich zum Überwintern ziehen, welcher erstmals in der Belehrung Vladimir Monomachs (vermutlich 1117) Erwähnung findet. “Indeed, we began to believe that most Russians hope that if they live good and virtuos lives, they will not go to heaven, but to Georgia, when they die”, schreibt John Steinbeck 1948 in seinem Russian Journal von seiner Russlandreise mit Robert Capa.
Bei seiner Kirchenreform schwebt dem russischen Patriarchen Nikon (1605-81) die georgische Kirchenverfassung mit ihrem Ehrenvorrang der geistlichen Macht als sakrale Utopie vor. Nach der petrinischen „Enthauptung“ der Kirche übernimmt im 19. Jh. die russische Literatur die Rolle des geistigen Gegengewichts zur weltlichen Macht und säkularisiert das Sehnsuchtsbild des großen Patriarchen zum arkadischen Traum. Pathetisch gesprochen, ließe sich die russische Hinwendung zu Georgien ähnlich der deutschen Liebe zu Italien als „Sehnsucht der Mitternacht nach dem Licht“ bezeichnen.
Nach dem Fall Konstantinopels ersuchten georgische Könige erstmals 1483 das „weiße Russland des großen Nordens“ um Schutz, welchem nach der geschichtstheologischen Überhö-hung des Pleskauer Mönchs Philotheos zum „Dritten Rom“ (um 1500) die Rolle zufällt, das Böse der Welt in Schach zu halten und die Schutzherrschaft über die orthodoxe Christenheit wahrzunehmen. Als Alexander II. von Kachetien 1586 angesichts der türkischen Bedrohung den Sohn Ivans des Schrecklichen Fëdor um Schutz für sich und sein Volk bittet, kann dieser die Zusage seines militärischen Beistands zwar nicht einhalten, doch führen er und seine Nachfolger fortan den Titel „Herrscher des iberischen Landes und der georgischen Könige“. Für die Georgier beginnt „die Sonne im Norden aufzugehen“, wie es der Dichter Mamuk´a Barat´ašvili (18. Jh.) formuliert. Gänzlich entgeht den Georgiern die Säkularisierung Russlands seit Peter dem Großen. An die Stelle der „Heiligen Rus´“ tritt die „Große Rus´“, welche sich nicht mehr von eschatologischem Sendungsbewusstsein und religiöser Affinität, sondern von strategischen Interessen und der Staatsräson leiten lässt. Das Missverständnis bedingt eine Entfremdung und eine Tragödie, die bis heute währt.

Since the rise of scholasticism, many prominent figures of the Western Christian tradition have attempted to answer questions of faith through philosophically rigorous examinations. Such an approach has had a considerable influence upon the methodology of intellectual institutions in teaching and doing theology. It is under such a scholastic focused epistemological framework that the question of the knowledge of God – perhaps the most important core question of the Christian faith – is attempted to be addressed in the West.

However, the scholastic focused answers of many theologians and philosophers to the challenges around the epistemic status of religious truth claims seem to afford little to no place to the vast tradition of the Early Church. This paper queries the validity of such an approach, offering an alternative way of addressing the question of the knowledge of God through the use of the Orthodox Church tradition, with a special emphasis given to the liturgical experience. For this purpose, I shall use the writing of the Church Fathers in showing the unknowability of God vis-à-vis his essence, and how the apophatic way, expressed through a fearful approach of – and participation in - the divine liturgy, offers a practical way to the knowledge of God.

This paper seeks to highlight the cultural influence of the Eastern rites on the Western rites through an investigation of the Trisagion chant in the Early Middle Ages.  While the meaning of the chant in Constantinople and Antioch began to ossify as Trinitarian and Christological, respectively, following the Council of Chalcedon (451), commentary was nonetheless unified early on in framing the Trisagion as a standard of orthodoxy, a safeguard against heresy, and an earthly manifestation of heavenly worship.  Outside of these two urban centers, in Egypt, Persia, Gaul, and Hispania, a more fluid conception of the chant persisted, spinning out visions of a judging, saving, and, often, crucified Christ.  The fluidity of meaning here is apparent in the varied uses and tropings of the Trisagion in the Gallican and Old Hispanic liturgies, and it provides a rich context for the decision of the late-Carolingian liturgists to add the Trisagion to the Adoration of the Cross ceremony in the mid-9th century.  Comparative analysis of the Good Friday chants in the Carolingian and Aquitainian repertoires, finally, with particular attention to the Popule meus verses, brings into relief the accumulated meaning of the bilingual Good Friday Trisagion chant in the Carolingian Empire with respect to the Eastern Christian Empire it strove to emulate and equal.
