PPNB

Research on the Neolithic of Syria has been based on the results obtained from salvage excavations in the Middle Euphrates region. However, archaeological investigations over the past decade in other areas such as Northwestern Syria have increased our knowledge on the Neolithisation process on a broader scale, showing regional diversity in Syria during the Neolithic. This article presents results from the sounding at Tell Ain Dara III in the Afrin Valley, Northwestern Syria, and considers this site's cultural affinity with neighbouring sites during this time period. The excavation, undertaken in 1991 by the Directorate-General of Antiquities and Museums, revealed a Late Pre-Pottery Neolithic B (PPNB, late 8 th millennium BC) settlement with architectural remains associated with a rich variety of stone artefacts made from various raw materials. The site's material culture, especially the lithic industry, closely resembles those from other Neolithic sites in Northwestern Syria. New evidence from this research at Tell Ain Dara III reinforces the previously suggested theory that sites in Northwestern Syria could have formed a cultural unity during the Late PPNB to the Early Pottery Neolithic periods (late 8 th – early 7 th millennia BC). Résumé : La recherche sur les sites néolithiques de Syrie a longtemps reposé sur les résultats des fouilles de sauvetage dans la région du Moyen Euphrate. Cependant, les recherches archéologiques effectuées depuis de nombreuses années dans d'autres régions comme la Syrie du Nord-Ouest ont élargi nos connaissances sur le processus de néolithisation, montrant la diversité régionale en Syrie durant le Néolithique. Cet article présente les résultats d'un sondage réalisé à Tell Ain Dara III dans la vallée d'Afrin, au nord-ouest de la Syrie, et analyse l'affinité culturelle de ce site avec des sites voisins au cours de cette période. La fouille, entreprise en 1991 par la Direction générale des Antiquités et des Musées, a révélé un site du PPNB récent (fin du 8 e millénaire av. J.-C.) où des vestiges architecturaux étaient associés à une grande variété d'objets de pierre fabriqués à partir de diverses matières premières. La culture matérielle du site, en particulier l'industrie lithique, ressemble beaucoup à celle d'autres sites néolithiques du Nord-Ouest de la Syrie et renforce la théorie proposée antérieurement que les sites du Nord-Ouest de la Syrie auraient formé une unité culturelle durant le PPNB récent et le Néolithique céramique ancien (fin du 8 e-début du 7 e millénaires av. J.-C.).

This contribution summarizes the main results of an analysis of some 3,500 primary and secondary products from two dwellings at LPPNB Ba’ja/Southern Levant with a particular focus on the flint raw material selection strategies. A different flint raw material choice is indicated between bifacial tool and unidirectional blade production on the one hand and bidirectional blade production on the other hand. While unidirectional and bifacial tool production predominantly used flints from secondary sources, the bidirectional blades and blade products were made of flints which - according to their cortex - stem from primary sources or from nearby. Finally, potential primary flint source areas in the vicinity of Ba’ja are presented.

This work presents the results of the analysis of wood charcoal remains from a roof found in Tell Qarassa North (Early PPNB), southern Syria. The analysis was carried out in 50 burnt beams found in situ, as well as in 3 flotation samples from the same structure and in a flotation sample retrieved from a post hole. The taxa selected to build up the roof were Pistacia terebinthus/palaestina, Salicaceae and to a lesser extent Amygdalus sp. The structure was composed at least of a post of Pistacia wood which supported a structure made of branches and medium size trunks orthogonally disposed. The wood structure was covered with non-woody plant parts and adobe layers. Abundant xylophagous galleries and fungi remains identified in the charcoal remains point to a deterioration of the wooden structure previous to its burning.

ABSTRACT Recent excavations at Ein Zippori in the Lower Galilee revealed a complex proto-historic site dated to the Pre-Pottery Neolithic B, Early Chalcolithic and Early Bronze Age periods. While the nature of the Neolithic occupation is not clear and consists of few lithic artifacts, the density of the architectural remains and rich archaeological assemblages indicate well established Early Chalcolithic and Early Bronze IB settlements. The recent excavations at Ein Zippori, together with other investigations carried out at Yiftahel and Tell Mitzpe Zevulun North (Nahal Zippori 3) add insights into the proto-historic settlement pattern within the Nahal Zippori basin. The early farming communities around Nahal Zippori founded their villages within the alluvial lands along the stream. It is only with the rise of fortified towns during the Early Bronze II that these settlements relocated from the fertile lands to the hilltops overlooking the Nahal Zippori Valley.

The removal of crania from burials, their ritual use and their disposal, generally in cranial caches, are the most particular characteristics of the funerary ritual in the transition to the Neolithic in the Near East. Despite the importance of this ritual, detailed studies of cranial caches are rare. This funerary ritual has traditionally been interpreted as a form of ancestor-veneration. However, this study of the cranial caches found at the site of Tell Qarassa North, South Syria, dated in the second half of the ninth millennium BC, questions this interpretation. The 12 crania, found in two groups arranged in two circles on the floor of a room, belonged to male individuals, apart from one child and one preadolescent. In 10 of the 11 cases, the facial skeletons were deliberately mutilated. In the context of the Pre-Pottery Neolithic B, when the symbolism of the human face played a vital role in ritual practice, this mutilation of the facial skeleton could be interpreted as an act of hostility. In the absence of indicators of social stratification or signs of violence that might indicate more coercive forms of society, the veneration of ancestors has been explained as a mechanism for social cohesion, which would have been necessary in a context of rapid growth in the population of settlements. However, data on the negative nature of some funerary rites, of punishment or indifference rather than veneration, should make us question an over-idealized view of the first Neolithic societies.
