La obra artística y poética de Cecilia Vicuña se ha caracterizado por encarnar el acto de tejer en distintos medios, volviéndolo un acto político metafórico y tangible de resistencia. Tomando a la instalación multimedia Quipu desaparecido (2018) como caso de estudio, este ensayo propone acercarse a la producción de Vicuña como un gesto re-parador, un impulso textil ecológico que entrelaza la cosmovisión andina y una sensibilidad espacial multi-sensorial.//
The visual and poetic work of Cecilia Vicuña has been characterized by incarnating the act of weaving through diverse media, turning it into a political act of resistance. Taking the multi-media installation Disappeared Quipu (2018) as a case study, this paper proposes approaching Vicuña’s work as a re-pairing gesture, an ecological textile impulse that interlaces the Andean cosmovision with a multisensorial spatial sensibility.

Analisis de la coleccion de tejidos de la sociedad arqueologica Paracas Necropolis, reunida a principios del siglo XX por el doctor Julio C. Tello, que custodia el Museo de Arqueologia y Antropologia de la Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos de Lima. Incluye una revision integral de los tejidos, e informacion sobre su temporalidad, elaboracion, funcion, iconografia y posibles usuarios [tildes omitidas].

El presente trabajo busca mostrar el proceso de elaboración
tecnológica del Manto Blanco de la cultura Paracas, tejido emblemático
que forma parte de las colecciones textiles del Museo
de Arqueología y Antropología de la Universidad Nacional Mayor
de San Marcos, joya invaluable de nuestra universidad. Los
textiles andinos prehispánicos son de los más finos de todo el
mundo, pero entre estos sobresalen los bordados de la cultura
Paracas, entidad sociopolítica del periodo Formativo de la costa
Centro Sur Andina.

El Manto Blanco de Paracas está conformado por tres paños unidos,
paño central y dos paños laterales angostos, sobre el cual se
han bordado finamente 120 personajes; identificándose 8 personajes
que se repiten entre 10 y 22 veces cada uno; finalmente
se le unió tiras de flecos de colores. Por la dimensión del manto
blanco es probable la participación de un grupo de personas especialistas.

RESUMEN En este artículo se presenta una síntesis de las principales investigaciones y evidencias arqueológicas relacionadas con el fenómeno Paracas de la costa sur peruana, el cual se desarrolló durante gran parte del primer milenio antes de nuestra era (800-200 a.C.). Se presentan y discuten las principales investigaciones, la cronología, el territorio que abarcó y los principales asentamientos asociados con la cultura material vinculada con este fenómeno social. Finalmente, se presenta un modelo de explicación social para comprender las dinámicas sociales que permitieron la aparición de lo que es conocido en la literatura arqueológica como la «Cultura Paracas». The Paracas phenomenon: state of the art and a model of social explanation ABSTRACT This article presents a synthesis of the main investigations and archaeological evidence related to the Paracas phenomenon of the southern Peruvian coast, which developed during much of the first millennium before our era (800-200 BC). The main investigations , the chronology, the territory covered and the main settlements associated with the material culture linked to this social phenomenon are presented and discussed. Finally, a model of social explanation is presented to understand the social dynamics that allowed the appearance of what is known in archaeological literature as the «Paracas Culture».

¿Cómo se organizaban económicamente las personas antes de que existieran los sistemas financieros y comerciales globales? ¿Cómo se aseguraba el suministro de materias primas y se organizaba el intercambio de mercancías en el pasado? ¿Podrían las economías del pasado ser una alternativa a las actuales, que por lo general tienen fuertes repercusiones sobre el medio ambiente y conllevan una creciente desigualdad social? Son este tipo preguntas las que aborda el proyecto de investigación "La economía de la cultura Paracas (800–200 a.C.) en el sur del Perú" que se realiza en el marco de una tesis doctoral sobre el sistema económico de la cultura arqueológica Paracas. En ella se reconstruyen los mecanismos de intercambio económico, de adquisición y uso de los recursos, así como los procesos de producción y consumo de esta sociedad prehispánica en la vertiente occidental de los Andes. Como caso de estudio y base informativa acudimos al Período Tardío de Paracas (370–200 a.C.) en los valles de Palpa (transecto andino).

Esta tesis pretende explicar el significado de los “apéndices serpentiformes” Nasca, atributos recurrentes para transformar a un ser humano en ancestro o divinidad. Gracias al enfoque semiótico, se desarrolla una discusión sobre la construcción y el empleo de las convenciones de la imagen sobrenatural en la iconografía Nasca. Se examinan también los datos arqueológicos y las fuentes etnográficas sobre los Andes centrales para poner en cuestión las prácticas de producción, la organización socio-política y la cosmovisión nasquense. En efecto, la pervivencia de los apéndices serpentiformes, desde el estilo Paracas Necrópolis-Topará (Horizonte Temprano 8, 9 y 10) hasta la fase Nasca 5 (coetánea con el abandono del gran centro ceremonial de Cahuachi), muestra un sistema religioso complejo donde el culto del ancestro es el eje principal. Los objetos rituales más importantes por su decoración, textiles, instrumentos musicales, cerámicas y mates pirograbados, sugieren además la existencia de un pensamiento colectivo y una memoria compartida por varios grupos o linajes. Los apéndices, que brotan a manera de serpientes o brotes fitomorfos del cuerpo de los personajes fantásticos, se relacionan con los flujos de agua, sangre u otros líquidos fisiológicos convirtiéndose en ductos para propiciar la fertilidad. Las figuras Nasca, con características de animales y plantas más representativos de la región, se convierten así en receptáculos de poderes sobrenaturales. De esta manera, el concepto quechua de camac, camaquen, camasca (Taylor 2000) coincide de manera muy cercana con el campo semántico de los apéndices en esta investigación

Centros ceremoniales y ciudades en arqueología prehispánica son dos conceptos ligados pero
igualmente distanciados y muchas veces opuestos por la teoría. No cabe duda, que dichas
posiciones teóricas responden esencialmente a esquemas ideológicos en gran parte alimentado por la visión evolucionista del viejo mundo (occidentalización) y no fundados en base a contextos o coyunturas prehispánicas de corta o larga duración. Por ejemplo, la semántica del
centro ceremonial nos orienta a pensar en términos de asentamientos dedicados exclusivamente a ritos y ceremonias, obviamente este término en su connotación semántica no tiene
asidero en lo real, ya que eventos de ritos y ceremonias son determinados por estrategias
mayores ligadas al orden de lo político. Es por ello, que más adecuado sería utilizar la noción
de “centro político” en cuyo contexto de espacio y tiempo se establecen intrínsecamente
eventos ceremoniales. Desde este punto de vista dilucidando la noción del centro político
prehispánico y analizándolo dentro de esta perspectiva, dichos centros cumplieron funciones
muy similares al de las ciudades del viejo mundo.

Catalogo de los materiales arqueologicos recuperados del fardo 290, exhumado por Julio C. Tello a principios del siglo XX en la peninsula de Paracas, Ica. Este fardo correspondio a un individuo de alta jerarquia de la sociedad Paracas Necropolis [tildes omitidas].

The research presented in this volume reconstructs the economic system of the Paracas culture (800-200 BC) in southern Peru. In doing so, the main emphasis is on economic exchange at the western slope of the Andes, with the Late Paracas period (370-200 BC) in the Palpa valleys (Andean Transect) serving as a case study. For this archaeoeconomic approach, Jauranga (285 m.a.s.l.), Collanco (1.630 m.a.s.l.), and Cutamalla (3.300 m.a.s.l.) – where extensive excavations were conducted by the Palpa Archaeological Project of the German Archaeological Institute – are the most important sites. The work is based on analyses of excavated materials, particularly obsidian artifacts, malacological finds, and camelid bones. Therefore, various methods including archaeometric techniques, quantification, artifact classification, and species determination are combined.
The results show exchange processes in the western Andes that are characterized by unbalanced commodity flows. Resources from the highlands such as obsidian, camelids and their products arrived at the Pacific desert strip in large amounts, while marine resources such as sea shells reached highland regions only in small amounts. Raw materials were not just procured in the mountains, there were also strategic production centers like Cutamalla. All in all, consumption at coastal settlements like Jauranga needs to be seen as the driving force behind the Paracas economy.

In 1996, the team of the Centro Italiano Studi e Ricerche Archeologiche Precolombiane (CISRAP), headed by Giuseppe Orefici, discovered a small cache of elaborate Nasca textiles at Cahuachi that provides new bases for identifying Nasca-style textiles in other regions, including those excavated on the Paracas Peninsula by Julio C. Tello. In the late 1920s, Tello's team excavated 429 mummy bundles, some of them very large and elaborate, within the walls of earlier buildings at the site that he called the Necropolis of Wari Kayan. Although some authors persist in calling the Wari Kayan textiles "Paracas" textiles, similarities with the Cahuachi textiles indicate that a significant proportion of the embroidered textiles from the Necropolis of Wari Kayan are Nasca style. To support this contention, I will first present a detailed description of the techniques and imagery of the three Nasca textiles excavated at Cahuachi in 1996, and will then select a small number of distinctive features. The distinctive features will be used to correlate textiles from the Necropolis of Wari Kayan with similar clusters of features, which identify them as Nasca style. The expanded sample of Nasca-style textiles, including those from the Necropolis of Wari Kayan, contains strong indications that the Nasca people embedded extensive bodies of systematic numerical data into their textiles, which will be briefly described here. Finally, issues of the style and chronology at the Necropolis of Wari Kayan will be reviewed and updated.

The article surveys textiles of the Nasca style, an ancient style of the South Coast of Peru, c. 0 - 650 C.E. Everyday clothing is described, as well as the highly decorated elite textiles. Techniques, imagery and pattern repetitions, as well as processes that include the use of samplers, are described. Text in Spanish and English. Well-illustrated with color photographs.

Presented article, based on the results of the latest archaeological research and the analysis of cataloged objects, provides a multi-faceted characteristic of the phenomenon of intentional and culturally conditioned cranial deformation in the pre-Columbian Nasca culture. In the light of interdisciplinary research and analysis of iconographic motifs we can notice that Nasca folks specifically identified themselves and recognized each other by particular physical attributes. Especially frontal-occipital cranial deformation is a dramatic example of the situational manipulation of ethnic identity. Results obtained in presented paper clearly demonstrate that the deformation methods and its objectives could be widely different, as well as not homogeneous within the southern coast of Peru. Wprowadzenie Mianem intencjonalnych lub uwarunkowanych kulturowo deformacji czaszek określa się zabiegi, wykonywane na etapie niemowlęctwa oraz wczesnego dzieciństwa, prowadzące do zmiany naturalnego kształtu ludzkiej czaszki. Tego typu praktyki polegały na celowej zmianie przebiegu rozwoju i kierunku wzrostu sklepienia czaszki z zamiarem nadania mu określonego kształtu. Nienaturalną formę głowy osiągało się zwykle za pomocą długotrwałego poddawania czaszki niemowlęcia lub noworodka ukierunkowanym siłom kompresyjnym o relatywnie niskim stopniu intensywności, polegającym na precyzyjnym uciskaniu lub zwężeniu głowy niemowlęcia w trakcie początkowych miesięcy jego życia, w okresie gdy rosnąca czaszka jest wciąż plastyczna. W ten sposób czaszce nadawany jest pożądany kształt o symbolicznym znaczeniu – po określonym czasie sklepienie twardnieje, a zmiany stają się nieodwracalne (Tiesler, 2012: 20). Modyfikacja kształtu czaszki, interpretowana jako forma indywidualnego lub zbiorowego identyfikatora, była zazwyczaj narzucana poprzez wymogi społeczne przy narodzinach niemowlęcia i stanowiła nieusuwalny znacznik tożsamości etnicznej danej jednostki w trakcie całego jej życia (Tiesler, 2014: 4‒5). Deformacje czaszek są uznawane przez antropologów za charakterystyczne cechy kulturowe, pozwalające na oznaczenie granic terytorialnych lub społecznych, stanowiące potwierdzenie określonego pochodzenia etnicznego oraz pokrewieństwa, które przyczyniają się do utrzymywania i zacieśniania kontaktów w obrębie danych grup społecznych (Fehir, 2014: 29‒30). Warto zwrócić uwagę na pewien terminologiczny chaos związany z opisywanym zjawiskiem. Niektórzy autorzy w bioarcheologicznych publikacjach wykorzystują głównie terminy " kształtowania " i " modelowania " czaszek, lub też " intencjonalnej modyfikacji kształtu " sklepienia czaszki. Podkreślają ponadto potrzebę standaryzacji naukowej

Paracas society spread over a large geographical area on the southern Peruvian coast between 800 BCE and 200 BCE. Unlike an "archaeological culture" that has uniform economy, politics, and ideology and is integrated under a single political structure, the Paracas phenomenon was a series of communities adopting different forms of economic and political organizations that were, nevertheless, economically linked and sharing the same religious ideology. The social mechanisms by which all these communities and political entities were linked included exchange, ritual, and religion, which allowed them to share a series of artifacts, social practices, rituals, and religious iconography. In each of the valleys, every entities, or group of communities, had their own architectural and artisanal features and were economically and politically autonomous. The famous archaeological sites associated with Cerro Colorado on the Paracas peninsula seem to have been more than a central place for Paracas society, a social space of integration in which the worship of ancestors stood out as an ideological and religious sustenance that connected communities and elites from different areas of the southern coast of Peru.

El analisis iconografico de tres mantos procedentes de un fardo Paracas Necropolis de alta jerarquia muestra el desarrollo de un ritual de sacrifico humano. Se identifican los roles asumidos por los personajes bordados y las etapas del ritual: desde el sacrificio propiamente dicho hasta el apoderamiento del vencido por medio de un acto de antropofagia [tildes omitidas].

In this investigation we explore the relationship between the dental health and the archaeological and paleoenvironmental changes identified in the northern area of the Rio Grande of Nasca drainage, between the years 3500 BC and AD 1000.

The frequencies of caries and dental wear of 145 skeletons whose provenience is the Palpa valleys were analysed. These skeletons belong to four subsequent periods: the Archaic period (ca. 3500 BC), the Paracas culture in the Early Horizon (800 – 200 BC), the Nasca culture in the Early Intermediate Period (AD 80 – 650) and the Wari influence period in the Middle Horizon (AD 650-1000). Each skeleton was recorded for caries, attrition, sex, age and pathology. The caries frequencies were recorded and analysed with a method adapted from Hillson (1996, 2001), while attrition was measured with the scales of Smith (1984) and Hillson (2001).

The results indicate that during the Archaic period there was a mixed diet, combining tough and fibrous foods with cultivated and processed foods, with higher percentages of this last kind of foods than the expected. Regarding Paracas, Nasca and the Wari influence period, there is an increasing tendency throughout the time, both in the caries frequencies and the occlusal attrition levels, showing the highest peaks in the Middle Horizon. The causes of this could be the introduction of some cultural practice producing higher levels of attrition between Paracas and Nasca and the increase of consumption of cariogenic foods in the Middle Horizon. In Nasca times there are also differences in the oral health that can be correlated to status. Finally, this study demonstrates the importance of recording and computing independently the initial sites of caries as well as initial caries and cavities.

Due to increasing demand of archaeologists for accurate and fast documentation of ceramics, we provide an automated system for acquisition and documentation of sherds. This is done by 3D-acquistion using structured light and by estimation of the profile line using the axis of rotation. As ceramics manufactured in South America are not supposed to be manufactured on rotational plates, we conducted experiments together with the German Archaeological Institute (DAI) to apply and adapt our system on freehand manufactured Nasca ceramics. The experiments including a comparison between manual and automated drawings of profile lines were done in-situ at the excavations in Palpa, Peru. To gather a ground truth about the vessels the sherds belong to, we acquired 102 complete vessels with well-known archaeological context. The symmetry of these vessels was analyzed and experiments for automated profile estimation were used to cross-validate existing classification rules. We could show how to assist archaeological work by estimation of profile lines and additional quality features based on the symmetry of the acquired vessels. Furthermore we show how the use of 3D-scanners can be used by estimation of unwrapped surfaces and virtual restoration of decorations of the painted Nasca fine-ware (30–40% of the findings). Therefore we can show that the documentation can be done in a fraction of time compared to manual documentation. We also show how the high resolution 3D-acquisiton can be used to answer archaeological questions about ancient manufacturing techniques of ceramics.

It has long been recognized that the Nasca culture (ca. A.D. 1-750) of the Peruvian south coast finds its roots in the Para cas society (ca. 800 B.C.-A.D. 1). Yet the social mechanisms responsible for the innovations that characterize the transi tion are poorly known. The southern Nasca region, which became the most dynamic region in terms of ceremonial life and intervalley integration, however, was never an important area of Paracas occupation. In this article I use literature on migra tion and frontier development to explain the genesis of Nasca society. Four phenomena that are common on historical fron tiers seem to have been at play in the southern Nasca region: initial simplification of hierarchy, pioneer effect, "wealth-in-people," and factionalism. Based on data from excavations at La Puntilla, a settlement that spanned the Late Paracas-Initial Nasca transition, I argue that the needs of interregional integration and cooperation following initial set tlement of the frontier by Paracas populations and subsequent demographic growth prompted the genesis of Nasca society. The proposed long-term scenario also provides a context for later innovations in water management and agricultural intensification.

Se presentan algunos resultados de mi tesis doctoral, tratando de definir los fundamentos socioculturales de los cambios que vivieron las poblaciones de cultura Paracas después de la decadencia de la cultura Chavín entre 200 a.C. y 100 d.C. Así, se volve a discutir la idea tradicional de una simple transición estilística Paracas-Nasca, reconociendo su fragilidad gracias a una revisión de los contextos arqueológicos y una perspectiva regional de la problemática.

Resumen Hasta hace poco, la transición entre el final de la época Paracas (380-260 a.C.) y la subsiguiente Nasca Inicial (260 a.C.-80 d.C.) de la costa sur del Perú, se ha estudiado principalmente a través de los restos funerarios y los análisis del patrón de asentamiento. Sin embargo, si intentamos entender los mecanismos socio-culturales y políticos que subyacen a estos cambios grandes, necesitamos un mejor conocimiento de los detalles de la vida cotidiana de aquella gente. Con información de recientes investigaciones, aquí pretendemos contribuir al entendimiento de la ocupación semipermanente de un sitio Ocucaje 9/10-Nasca 1, (Samaca 1004) en la Cuenca de Samaca, en la parte baja del valle de Ica. El sitio se encuentra sobre la pampa, en el borde de la cuenca, aproximadamente a 80 metros por encima de la planicie aluvial del actual río Ica y distante de cualquier fuente de agua. El sitio está asociado con una serie de geoglifos trapezoidales marcados en la superficie de esta pampa. A través de la evidencia-cerámica, lítica, zoológica, botánica y funeraria-recolectados sistemáticamente de la super-ficie, propenemos varias hipótesis sobre qué tipo de sitio fue Samaca 1004 y porqué se ubicó en ese lugar.

Until recently the transition between the Paracas (380-260 B.C.) and subsequent Initial Nasca (260 B.C.-A.D. 80) epochs on the south coast of Peru was understood primarily through mortuary remains,and settlement pattern analysis. If we are to understand properly the socio-cultural and political mechanisms that underlay this period of great change, however, we need a better understanding of the quotidian details of the lives of those people who made and experienced them. We seek here to contribute to that understanding by reporting recent investigations of a semi-permanent Ocucaje

We use the built environment of residential sites (house form and community layout) to investigate the effects of increasing regional
integration at the level of the community in middle-range societies. We consider spatial data on house form, arrangement of residences within settlements, site location, and organization of non-residential spaces to reveal specific social phenomena linked with pan-regional political organization and ethnic identity formation, and evaluate how macro-scale processes affect micro-scale phenomena. Specifically, we argue that architecture reflects different community patterns of ritual, integration, and inequality. As a case study, we employ a diachronic perspective for two periods in Peruvian south coastal prehistory to assess the magnitude of changes implied by the genesis of Nasca society out of the preceding Paracas. Survey and excavation data from residential sites in the southern Nasca region indicate that
important modifications in local community organization accompanied the regional, wide-ranging effects of Nasca society and its innovative form of regional integration. Comparison of the residential built environment from both periods suggests important changes in ritual and patterns of status acquisition and maintenance. In addition, house form indicates that a greater level of household autonomy accompanied increasing regional integration and a decrease in conflict.

El estudio de la cultura Paracas se ha presentado como un caso de relevante interés de estudios arqueológicos desde el descubrimiento de momias enfardeladas en los cementerios de Cerro Colorado y Warikayan en la península de Paracas en la década de 1920. La caracterización de los patrones funerarios registrados por Julio César Tello, permitió proponer la existencia de dos fases relacionadas con la cultura Paracas: fase Cavernas y fase Necrópolis (Tello 2005[1959]; Tello y Xesspe 1979). De esta manera, la cultura material registrada en estos contextos (con principal atención en la cerámica y textiles asociados a la fase cavernas) se utilizarían como principales indicadores de filiación cultural Paracas a lo largo de la costa sur del Perú; desde el valle de Cañete por el norte, hasta el valle de Nazca por el sur. Sin embargo, recientes investigaciones relacionadas con los sitios y valles del periodo Formativo, asociados con dicha cultura material, han comenzado a sugerir diferencias materiales sustanciales entre distintas
zonas de esta región.

El presente estudio plantea cuestionar la supuesta homogeneidad existente en la materialidad asociada a la “cultura Paracas” (desde ahora, fenómeno Paracas) (800-100 a.C.), centrándonos principalmente en su cerámica. De esta forma, se tomará como punto focal de estudio el valle de Chincha, un valle que ha demostrado tener una potente e importante ocupación Paracas. Para ello, el estudio se estructurará sobre la base de las excavaciones realizadas en el sector del patio hundido de Cerro del Gentil, un sitio monumental Paracas asentado en el valle medio de Chincha (400-200 a.C.). Esta investigación utilizará la cerámica asociada a la fase Paracas Cavernas encontrada en dicho espacio arquitectónico, para un acercamiento a la caracterización y
definición de un estilo de producción propio en el valle de Chincha. Esta propuesta además se verá apoyada con la información contextual generada para los distintos sitios monumentales Paracas en el valle. A partir de este estudio, se buscará entender, desde una lectura de
etnicidad, las dinámicas sociales (principalmente las relacionadas a espacios público-ceremoniales) en el valle de Chincha, donde será crucial la comparación con contextos similares documentados en el valle de Ica. Finalmente, se debe señalar que los principales datos presentados en esta investigación formaron parte de las labores del Programa Arqueológico Chincha, proyecto que se encuentra dirigido por los doctores Charles Stanish y Henry Tantaleán.

The mortuary tradition of arranging garments around a larger-than-life form of an ancestor at this famous site is described. Some garments are huge, while others are tiny, which indicates they were made as offerings to the ancestor. The types of embroidered garments included in the bundles, as well as the types of garment depicted on the embroidered figures, are distinguished by gender attributes. Issues of style and time are reviewed and up-dated in the conclusion.
